DSMCU
DS Wireless Mix Controller

dub3000 said:
dsmcu implements the most important parts of the MCU mix protocol. it talks to audio workstation software (mainly tested with Reaper PC + allegedly Mac, may possibly work with other apps) over WIFI via DSMI.

This is pretty cool technologically nontheless, although I can't understand what kind of use there is to this...
I mean, if you already have some sort of controller with faders, why use a WIFI one which isn't as comfortable or advanced (only one fader at a time - basically like using a mouse)

Not trying to be mean or something, just trying to get the point!

A record button! Fantastic! Now I don't have to jump around like a mad thing from my computer to my drum kit and then back again to record!

Cheers!

No matter how cool this looks...is this useful????
I play in a studio band, and a friend of mine (who is in the band) has his own studio. I can't imagine that he would get excited if I showed him what my little DS can do with his slider panel. I guess he would say "Hmmmmyeah, but I've got something much more handy than a stylus..........REAL HANDS WITH FINGERS"

ofcourse it would be useful! i'm thinking of the record button!

say you want to record something, and you don't have a friend who could push record for you. And from your control room, lets say you have your guitar rig setup about 10 meters away from it ( through walls and shit ) then you can push record youself and don't have to run over there, and stop it, and push play to listen to it!

i would love to see this working with logic pro, or does it already?

Wireless means you can actually bring the controller anywhere within the WIFI range.

Cool, so given the DS wireless range, he can stand about 10 feet away. Nice!

sweet, so you can be at the drums, or instrument, and not have to run back and forth to record or adjust the mix. the latency looks really good as well.

for everyone asking: this is the main intention of the software. :-D

i've been getting this question a lot - it doesn't actually require the fader hardware unit, that's just there to demonstrate it's not faked. it runs fine just hooked up to just the PC, the only thing it requires is a wifi link to the pc or mac and some server software. (it does work both ways, though - if you move a hardware or screen fader the ds fader moves as well, but that's just reaper doing its thing, i can't take credit for that)

it's been tested successfully on reaper on pc and mac, kinda works with samplitude pc (i couldn't get it to send VU information but everything else worked fine), and yesterday i got a message that it works as a controller for ableton live (not sure if it was pc or mac but probably works on both). i couldn't get it talking to my housemate's logic installation though but maybe we were doing something wrong, i'm not really a mac guy.

i've got waaaaaay out in the hallway and it's still accurate. 20'+?

latency is good, updates in < 20ms usually.

thanks for all the feedback! still a lot to do, though.

cheers,

I was just being facetious. Making fun of the DS's wireless (lack of) range. Your software looks pretty cool.

that is a real nice gimmick, but there's no point if you work with a full workstation or mixer.
i think its a pretty good app for people who don't have all the tools for making music (like people you just record stuff with garage band or something like that : p). but its nice to see that people actually turn a ds in a mixer hehe.

I've got a full studio I use with a workstation. The recording booth is separate from the mixing booth so I can operate basic controls without having to walk back to the mixing desk each time.

This is very useful. Would be good to use live as well

All this midi stuff for ds homebrew has been awesome!

It's more than a mixer! It's a remote control for recording. If you play your guitar in front of the computer: good for you but my drums are on the other side of the room and it means that I don't have to get up each time I start and stop recording

This is nothing about "people who don't have all the tools", this is a more convenient way to use software.

i should really point out this is really just a technology preview at this point. it works and it does what it says it does, but i've got a couple of plans to make it a bit more useful in a couple of different contexts.

one idea is to have a 'transport only' mode that has nothing on the bottom screen except transport, scrub and info controls. another idea is to have it optimized for record arming tracks. i also intend to have a mode that lets it run more like a generic midi controller with a number of faders (e.g. drawbars for a b3). it needs a bit of refactoring before we get to that point but it's on the list. i'd also like more DAW support but i need to add some features to the DSMI library before we get to that point, and that'll be a major pain in the butt so i'm putting it off.

and yeah, it's not going to be useful to everybody but, yknow, it's fun! :-)

Good you pointed that out. Cause you know, we're all quite simple folks and immediately think "What does it do? What's in it for me? Why did anyone make this?", while it's obviously some sort of technical experiment of how to turn your DS into some sort of "touch screen based remote control device thingy"...

So, well done to you and good luck with the progress...
