Hip-hop is wonderful music, you people are just looking at the terrible hip-hop acts and foolishly judging the entire genre by them. That's akin to me saying that Fall Out Boy and Panic At the Disco, two horrible musical acts, make the entire rock genre shit. Of course you'd call me foolish for that, so the same applies to everyone else. I suggest you listen to some old school hip-hop (such as Eric B. and Rakim, Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions and Wu-Tang Clan) to get a grip on the music and what you like in it.
Jazz is also great stuff, I'd suggest albums by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and Thelonious Monk as starters, because they were main players in the "rebirth" of jazz as a truly artistic musical form in the 50's and 60's, in the bebop post-Swing era.
In the rock genre I'm a fan of some Led Zeppelin (Led Zeppelin IV, Houses of the Holy and Physical Graffiti, to be exact). The Rolling Stones (Exile On Main Street), Pink Floyd (Dark Side of the Moon) and The Who (The Who Sell Out?) are good starters, and pretty much the only old rock I like. The other rock that I listen to are hard rockin' (lol) indie bands, not that emo shit that's so popular today. But whatever you listen to, I hope you enjoy your music.
