As of late the internet has been flooded with vibe coded slop, and it's starting to reach the DS too, sadly.
So let's create thoughtful, human-engineered ports of our favorite games to Nintendo DS!
It's a fun little hardware beast, packing in all of the original GBA features, and maxxing the heck out of it with new tricks of its own :)

I have a very good port of Smash 64 to the DS running (no, the public port was not consulted, this is a separate project) and it runs quite well, hitting a beautiful 60fps in 3p battle, and still getting it tuned properly and hand-tailored for the DS. New features planned. Prerelease patcher available on the discord, below.

What's crazier though, is a working Grand Theft Auto III port is also running quite well! It uses all of the classic optimization tricks and more. Footage below.

So I have a fun new discord server set up, where people can join, develop, and learn how to create DS ports, so we can share what we've learned and limit the "AI slop" that might appear in its place. Core new libraries for facilitating ports is strictly no-AI, but each port's AI involvement is slightly at the discretion of the lead dev of each port. Play by some simple rules, get access to using central tooling and help from others in this small community.

Excited to see where this takes us, and for pushing the DS to its limits! :toot:

Edit: got some more people in the chat working on MK64, Half Life, and more!

Hopefully 3 gets more work done, but already looking good. But thinking it will be a while before it is close to perfect. VC....doubtful, since more complex.

Can't wait to not have to join a discord for it, no offense but I'm sure I'm not the only getting absolutely tired of having to join ANOTHER discord for some port lol

It doesn't surprise me to see Smash 64 running on the DS, considering that even SM64 and OoT are being ported to it.

BUT GTA 3??? A game made for sixth-generation consoles, and even the Dreamcast port running on the Nintendo DS? That is something I never would have expected, especially considering that 3DS ports require the New 3DS.

I'm rooting for you to finish this project, it is undoubtedly the most impressive port I've seen in a long time.

Thanks all!
I understand the not wanting to join the discord for yet another project, but do want to clarify a few things:
Smash DS preview is on the server so people have something tangible to play around with and know I'm not making stuff up. GTAIII DS is still very early and constantly evolving so no preview builds of that even on there (yet).

The goal of the discord server is primarily to bring homebrew devs together to create even more impressive stuff and share knowledge/tooling/etc.

None of this is open-source for the time being to protect against people running thru the projects with LLMs and slopping them to completion, and I'm also working on safeguards to limit that once the source code does eventually go public.

But yeah means a lot, real excited for the future of DS porting and homebrew at large ^_^

And what "safeguards" might those be out of curiosity? Don't tell me you don't plan on open sourcing it or something more insane like encrypting all of your code or making it unreadable for both humans AND LLMs. You can't stop technological progress. People couldn't stop PCs, or the internet, and now people can't stop AI. Like I said on the AI thread, AI should be embraced. Even if it does sometimes make sloppy code, and some people who use AI just make sloppy/bad/unfinished ports, humans can improve upon it. We don't need this division and war certain individuals seem to want to spite on.

Mostly in the realm of custom licenses, with a few other tricks. Not going to list everything in full detail ofc. Nothing to be against people reading, using it, etc. Just trying to get this started on the right foot and keep AI out of everything as much as possible for the short term.
Not trying to be divisive, just want to create good stuff
