Never mind "taking over". The way I see it, AI is very good at very quickly churning out plausible-looking dreck. And that's all it really needs to do – drown out thoughtful human expression.
I suspect it's too late to stop it now. Even if the US companies stopped building data centers and further developing AI, it will just make room for Chinese companies to take over and churn out more useless slop. I don't see a way out of it.
The only comfort might be that probably everyone has thought the same about technology by the time they get to my age. Previous generations were in a tizzy about Wikipedia, and before that it was just Google, and the Internet in general, and TV, and radio, and so on back through the generations. It's a bit silly to say that we're any more doomed now than previous generations were – or is it..?
