Sony is moving away from physical discs, will soon only release PlayStation games digitally

Sony made a shocking announcement today, revealing that the company plans to move away from physical game releases in the future. Citing claims of how the industry is moving away from physical copies and disc-based games, and prefers digital media, PlayStation will follow suit, and will only release PlayStation games digitally. Starting January 2028, physical disc production will end, and you'll only be able to purchase video games through a digital format, either from retailers or PlayStation themselves.

According to the most recent financial report from Sony, only 3% of PlayStation's annual sales came from physical software releases, with projections for that already low number set to fall even further through the end of the PlayStation 5's lifecycle.

As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028. Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. This transition has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.

This is a natural direction for Sony Interactive Entertainment to adapt to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today.

Sony will "get away with this" no matter how much you toddlers whine incessantly about it. A reminder: 250,000 PS5 owners have digitally signed the change.org petition to get Sony to revise their decision to wisely go digital-only. Which means over 98 million PS5 owners have not, nor can they be bothered because they don't give a fck.
We're a year and a half away from them actually ending disc production for new games, of course most people won't care until the consequences are directly in their face. PS5 sales have already slowed considerably due to the price hikes alone, and if that trend continues to the PS6, Sony is looking at losing somewhere between 33% and 50% of their customer base since the PS4 era. That's a massive drop in revenue which can't be ignored.

Petition.org is a fundamentally useless expression of fucking anything and whether or not they will “get away with it” does not impact what paying customers choose to do with their dollars.

The bigger impact will depend on the PS6 price at launch. They could easily allow drive attachment for PS5 discs to mitigate any fallout there, but the cost of the console itself will be key.

I just don't see the point if it's close to decent PC prices.

So long as The Last of Us Part 1 Remake Remastered comes out on disc for the PS5, I will die happy. The game looks ugly and dated in its current form.

Cancelled my PS+, cleared my extra NVMe, lined up a buyer for the ps5. i’ll lose the one digital game i bought and a couple exclusives, but fuck em
If you liked the games you had, why not just cancel the subscription, cease purchasing future titles for the platform and keep everything else?

I just find it so unfortunate that in the future, there will be no collecting of retro old games like we did in the past.. even if we manage to hack those consoles and save the games in digital format, the old habbit of going through used games stores, looking through ads in various places, exchaning games with other people, its gone..

If it costs like $1000 (or same value in £/€) then there's no way I'm buying one, I didn't even buy a PS5 Pro yet because it's too damn high for me. I'll take my time to find a good deal. 😅

No need to worry.. they already offer forms of leasing the consoles and financing.. I bet if they see that the increased price deters many potential buyers, they are going to offer more options of a form of renting the console, via eg their games subscription services..

OMG you are ignorant! In the U.S. and most jurisdictions, using unauthorized or unlicenced software is considered theft of intellectual property! And while it is relatively rare for someone to be prosecuted for it, it is possible and can be a felony:

Felony Copyright Infringement

To obtain a felony conviction in the US, the government must prove that the reproduction or distribution was of at least ten copies of copyrighted works worth more than $2,500 in a 180-day period, or involved distribution of a “work being prepared for commercial distribution” over a publicly-accessible computer network.

  • Felony under 17 U.S.C. § 506(a)(1)(A): A five year maximum prison sentence and a fine up to $250,000 or twice the monetary gain or loss. For repeat offenders, there is a ten year maximum prison sentence.
  • Felony under 17 U.S.C. § 506(a)(1)(B): A three year maximum prison sentence and a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the monetary gain or loss. For repeat offenders, it’s a six year maximum.
  • Felony under 17 U.S.C. § 506(a)(1)(C): A three year maximum sentence and a fine of $250,000 or twice the monetary gain or loss. If the offense was committed for purposes of commercial advantage or private financial gain, then it’s a five year maximum sentence. For repeat offenders, the maximum prison time doubles; i.e. six or ten years.

Please don't entertain us with your piss-poor understanding of the law. Children who don't know any better are reading.

I prefer not to act brainless, as if POS Nazi's like Traitor Trump and Elon Musk do not have a negative effect on ability to purchase gaming hardware at an affordable cost, not to mention all the other things they are doing. Stop pretending you live in a world isolated from political decisions. That kind of thinking got you clowns the so-called leaders you now have. Grow up.

“I prefer not to act brainless” while trying their hardest to turn every discussion into r/politics jerking off session.

as I said if you want to jerk off with like minded people, whe have a separate politics board: https://gbatemp.net/forums/world-news-current-events-politics.290/
in here you can talk shit about <insert current politician here>, sounds good right?

I have no idea if someone mentioned here but i read something lately which is quite valid. Physical disks are not just a serious issue for the PS games but it will trigger a chain reaction of issues. One of the many that made me wander a little more was that many disk buyer's preferred to go buy them themselves instead of ordering them to come to their house. On their way, they bought many other things like pizzas or package food or markets usually around the place of the video game store. So many of these shops will be impacted as they cared about buyer's tradition to buy physical games from stores.

I am 95% digital, and i can confirm from first hand this issue, while i was younger, me and my colleagues bought usually games like god of war, naruto, killzone etc (even multiplayer ones and we stopped by fast-food chains mcdonalds, goody's, pizza huts etc and bought something together with game. While i got older, instead of buying food we bought the game we sit around there to eat something all together but still we did some extra expenses to other shops too. Now that i am digital due to many circumstances but mostly because my friends do not play games and i rarely have time to visit a store without fearing my phone ringing (not for my, but one of my parents) i make no expenses. I just buy the game and that's it.

If you include many other shops like clothing, washing, etc we are counting here at least a portion of 25m potential customers for all these stores which now will not visit or they see a massive decrese. I am very sure that many shops around video games stores would have been very happy to see that 19th of november they will release GTA 6 and then very sad that they will not release a physical disk edition.

this is nothing new the majority of humans on this planet voted for this ,this is part of agenda 2030 you wil own nothing and be happy ! the elites dont do anything with out your permision . FIN

If the specs leaks are true and it's Zen 6 + RDNA 5 with 3x the PS5 performance I can only imagine what that would cost a year or two from now. I don't think the Steam Machine is anything to go by as Valve is almost certainly making a 30% profit whereas the PS6 will be somewhat subsidised at launch.

The UN 2030 Agenda envisages “a world of universal respect for human rights and human dignity, the rule of law, justice, equality and non-discrimination”.

No wonder all the right wing conspiracy theorists are against it.

Because everything can be played on PC except future games that I won’t be buying anyways. I lose bloodborne, which can be emulated. I lose demons souls, which can be emulated, I lose chrono cross which I have in my Steam family (or can be emulated). I bought the ps5 because I didn’t have a suitable PC. Now that I have a suitable PC why would I keep it?

Edit: oh and I lose my year 1 SF6 pass, but waves of characters makes me hate that game anyways so it’s hardly a loss.

Well, I think it is the UK, but there is a big Lawsuit against them for it. Not sure how it will go, but involves the 2nd hand Market, Users potentially losing Purchases for whatever BS reason Sony might throw around. So we shall see how it goes.

The 2030 Agenda makes it all sound so lovely, but for example if they really wanted to end poverty and therefore homelessness they've had decades to do so with countless empty buildings, yet they simply do not care about them. They'd rather have them legally take their own life at a clinic than keep them alive.

Here's the UK govt on Agenda 2030: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/5a75176e40f0b6360e47348f/Agenda-2030-Report4.pdf

Also, sanitation?? There's plenty of streets in England that are a total sh*thole as they're full of trash everywhere and the govt doesn't care to keep it clean nor penalize who dump rubbish.

And Goal 8... Decent work? People apply for hundreds and hundreds of jobs, but either they're turned down, ignored, or it's given to someone through recommendation.

Instead of focusing on other poor countries they need to focus on their own poor citizens who need help (and put them to work).

The whole rightwing nonsense simply doesn't stick, this isn't Reddit.

Sure, and the people who are spreading all the anti government stuff online, want to keep it like this because they like low taxes and privatised industries.

It's like you're in quick sand and only listening to the people who tell you to thrash around and try looking underneath the sand for the way out.

Underrated comment. Petition.org is a great example of how crying doesn't always get you your way.

I would just at least keep it for a Physical version of GTA 6. Just saying... Sony will not feel the pain when they already have your money.

But i'm with you, I'm not sure if a console is needed this time around, PC is the way to go. If i need to play a console exclusive, i'll just watch a playthrough on YouTube.
