Super Mario 64 gets a brand new port on the Nintendo DS, brings support for full local multiplayer


Since being decompiled Super Mario 64 has seen a considerable amount of interest. We've had multiple PC ports, but the efforts beyond that are really astounding. It's on the PS2, it's on the Vita, it's on the Xbox, PS3, Nintendo Switch, Wii U. Before this there was actually another version available for the DS too. So what makes this project so cool?

Based on the DSi port created by Hydr8gon, this new version runs fully on the original Nintendo DS system. This includes working audio, as well as analogue controls via the touch screen, with the game being playable in its entirety. From what I can tell all of this, though impressive, has already been done before. What hasn't been done before? Full local multiplayer on the Nintendo DS. With two systems, you're able to connect wirelessly and play through the game with a friend, complete with support for kicking your companion. It is something of a shame that DS Download Play isn't currently supported, but in time this may be tackled.

Those wanting to try the port will need to compile the game for themselves, requiring a dump of the original Super Mario 64 game, as well as Docker on your system. From there the instructions on the GitHub page are pretty easy to follow.

Like a lot of the other people here, i would like to see it get ported to the 3ds with analog support. (and 3d if it can be managed) I thought that there was a hack to get m64DS working with analog controls on the 3ds, or am i just imagining things? It looks like Mario 64 is becoming one of those games that gets ported to absolutely everything.

I’ve been watching is videos for a while and honestly how fast he releases videos on new ports is surprising by just one guy it screams AI

It's so cool that someone finally ported it to the original Nintendo DS and not just the DSi, that's amazing.

And they even adapted the multiplayer to work with two DS systems, these guys are simply magical.

We already have a great Hombrew Port of Super Mario 64 with 3D :P

Wild to me how people find a way to complain about free projects. Also wild people are bragging about stealing 🙏
Most ppl are just super unhappy I suppose.

Comes with not listening to music, drawing fanart, daydreaming and walking in forests

I still dream of the day someone will port it to Zeebo.

I didn’t know what a zeebo was till I searched. Everything on this was digital download if I read correctly. I think this system got some type of homebrew, so Mario 64 should work if someone wanted to port it.

Cool I’ve got to give this ago I luv anything Mario64 it always reminds me playing this game for the first time and how fantastic it was brings back great childhood memories or Mario Kart 64 with your best mates
 
I didn’t know what a zeebo was till I searched. Everything on this was digital download if I read correctly. I think this system got some type of homebrew, so Mario 64 should work if someone wanted to port it.
The Zeebo was a console released by TecToy in Brazil in 2008. Its production lasted only until 2011, being released only in Brazil, Mexico, China, and India. It was the first and only 100% digital console, without the use of physical media.

The console was a resounding failure. It had good hardware, but was limited by Qualcomm's BREW, which consumed a large portion of the console's resources, leaving little for games. To make matters worse, games were also limited to 50 MB due to the store, meaning many games were ports of Android/iOS or PSP titles, such as Need for Speed Carbon: Own The City.

Still, the console has some interesting things, such as some of the most faithful ports of Quake 1 and 2, one of the best remakes of Double Dragon, and some fun games like Um Jogo de Ovos and Zeebo F.C. Super League.

Much of the Zeebo's Dev Kit has been documented, but only in Portuguese, which likely contributed to the scarcity of homebrew for the console. The only ones I know of are these:

* Doom Port for the Zeebo (because of course everything has to run Doom):

* OpenLara Tomb Raider for Zeebo (There are two versions, one running via software which has a terrible framerate and one running via OpenGL ES 1.1 which has a great framerate but graphical glitches and control problems)


* A homebrew called Zeebo Utils adds some useful functionalities to the Zeebo, such as obtaining more detailed system data, changing settings not available through normal means, and using controllers from other consoles like the DualShock 4.

*And besides that, there's Street Fighter Alpha 2 and some arcade games, but they aren't exactly ports, they're just injections into the emulator of the retro games that the Zeebo had.

And I think that's all, unfortunately, due to the lack of documentation about it in English, the hacking scene is quite scarce.

It was a console that greatly marked my childhood; I would love to see Super Mario 64 running on it, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon.
