Ok so i tested both Batman games. Arkam origins has an update but it let me bypass the update and i could start the game. Batman: Arkham City: Armored Edition does not have an update at all.It never asked for one.
My game games are USA Region.

my best guess is that the digital version of arkham city has the same title id as the physical disk, but a higher internal version number. so when you installed it and ran it, it recorded that higher version number in the version list, and now that you try to run the disk version, it won't let you because the disc is lower version (and nags you about needing to update)

but that wouldn't really explain to me why it doesnt at least give the option of starting some sort of download, if it thinks that there is update data to download...

if this is the problem though, then you can probably fix it by editing the version list on slc

it's also weird if this is the problem, because it means legitimate customers who might have bought arkham city on the eshop and then decided to switch to a disc copy wouldnt be able to run their disc copy either. which sounds like a huge oversight if that's the case?

Yeah, normally you will be able to start the game without any update anyway. Otherwise what would folks without internet do back in the old days?

I would just get a bigger storage and go down the digital route only.

See, I would agree with you if the game in question wasn't 18 gigabytes large. It doesn't matter if my storage is 32 or 120 or 500; if I can cut that much storage out with just a $10 disc, then I would like to do that. It does not make any sense that a game with no updates would want you to update when there isn't an update available.

My video game backlog is the size of California.
On a related note, not WiiU but N64, I finally (FINALLY) finished Mystical Ninja 64 after only (literally) 9,546 days. ( I bought it on 4/19/1998, finished it on 6/7/2024).

I'll be working my way to my WiiU backlog...any year now LUL.

Normally the wii U lets you bypass the update. The thing is, when i restored my friends wii u with a bad nand every game was not letting us bypass the you have to update box. Maybe its because the SLC ticket version data was remembering previous versions.
So what i did was download all the updates there was for his games and then cloned the SD card. This way i have the updates in a backup. I actually made him two different sd card nands for redundancy incase one failed.

If you think it's bad ticket data, try deleting the games & tickets in question to see if that changes anything.

Also, sorry that I haven't been trying this. I had work today, and I'm really tired, and I got other work early tomorrow morning, but I'll get to it!

yeah no worries, I just wasnt sure if you had seen it

someone on page 2 has a similar issue and it sounds like even for games we know have an update, there isnt going to be a button to start the update, it's supposed to start on its own I guess. but since arkham city doesnt have an update, it does nothing

and since we know it works fine on a system that hasnt had the digital version installed, to me this sounds like a promising lead at least. I dont know what else it could be, especially if you ruled out tickets too

I like to think I ruled out tickets, but since it was the first time I had used both an FTP client and a hex editor, there's always the chance that I got it wrong, and I never tested any of my other games before undoing it. I like to think I narrowed it down by following certain patterns between my tickets and the hex code I deleted. Arkham City was especially problematic because its ticket is paired with 2 other titles in its .tik file – one of them being a Zelda game.

Which yeah, maybe I should have instead gotten Wind Waker HD off eBay, because if  that disc didn't work, I would at least have a more worthwhile collectable. Literally, when I first got my refurbished Wii U back in the day, it just so happened to have the Zelda gamepad, and I've had it ever since!

I dont think tickets can cause that problem anyway. the problem you could get with tickets is if you tried installing something to run without cfw, and you already had a fake ticket for it. then the system keeps using that fake ticket as the default and things dont work on ofw

on 3ds fake tickets were a problem after 2018, when it became required to have valid signed tickets to download and install anything from the eshop. so if you had an unused fake ticket on nand and tried to download or redownload that content on eshop, the download would fail because your ticket for it wasnt valid

the ticket does contain version info (I think?) but if it's anything like the 3ds, the version in ticket isnt used for anything. instead it gets the version number from the tmd. if you go online the console can get information about the latest available update version for every game and it checks that to notify if an update is available. it will still let you play without updating though, as long as you've never installed that update in the past.

but in addition to available software versions it also keeps track of the highest version number you've ever had installed for that title, and that's the lowest required version that it will allow you to boot. they do it to prevent downgrading games (to prevent incompatible saves with lower update version or something, and maybe prevent being able to downgrade to exploit older software versions)

if the wii u only knows about the update from the eshop saying "hey there's an update available", it'll notify but you can still play without updating, because they dont want to force an update when you might not even be able to update at that moment. but if you already had the update installed before, it's assumed that you do have access to a good connection, since you'd downloaded it already. so it prevents running the game if the installed version number is lower. the switch works the same way also

on 3ds it happens quite a bit that the digital version for a game is for example v32 internally, while the cartridge copy of that same game is v0 (example: omega ruby digital is v3120, cartridge is v3072). so I wouldnt be surprised if this happens on the wii u too, the digital version could be v32 and it sets the required version to v32, but the disc is v0 and then it refuses to run it because v0 is less than v32

I like how you think 18gb is that big. Buy hey you do you.
I mean, I own a PS5, so I understand 18 GB isn't big, but it is big for Nintendo standards, and it is the biggest digital game in my Wii U library.

But I have some wonderful news to share! I know Captain N did some of his own testing, but today I visited a friend to try using my disc on his unhacked Wii U just to double down the research.
Not only did the game boot up, there wasn't even an update message! It just booted straight to the game no problem!

This, to me, is great because we now have a lead! I now have irrefutable proof for myself that I can undo whatever it is I've done to myself!!! I just need to figure out what! I still haven't yet used 4d's suggestion, but I will soon!

Again, maybe if I didn't pirate Arkham City beforehand, there wouldn't be this confusion in the first place. Smart way to fight piracy, if you ask me...kind of... You can still play the game digitally, so is it actually anti-piracy?

That'd be great! Thanks!

I also own Arkham Origins; it was my first-ever Wii U game I owned. I could delete everything but my save data, and see if my disc will update for Origins, but if that fails, then I just threw a perfectly good game of mine away, and I don't have an adequate enough PC yet to just play it on a PC.

Well, after a few days, I finally installed Aroma, linked my Pretendo, and......

Nothing...
I'm still met with the same error.

Guys, I think I'm just stuck with a useless disc. If the update data isn't somewhere out there (and I KNOW it's a thing because my Arkham Origins update data is only a few megabytes), then I simply cannot play this game with a disc.

Unless a miracle comes up, I am more or less defeated. I have until late July to refund my disc, so maybe I'll hold out hope a little longer.
Have you tried downloading updates using NUSspli? There's an updates tab so you can download the update data without downloading the whole game
