Just wondering, did you test your PS1 texture packs? Because from my experience this feature is really bad in both PS1 emus. I worked on a PS1 texture pack for two years, before I stopped it, because it has so many issues and nobody adressed them. Since its initial release in 2020 it never got an update. And it probably won't in the future aswell. So don't hang your hopes too high for good PS1 texture packs.
Has anyone tested PS1 Game dumping on PCSX2?

They won't. Duckstation and Beetle PSX HW use different approaches for texture dumping and replacing. They are not compatible.

Duckstation never had this feature in its master. It has always been an open PR. You have to compile it from there to use it.

I've no idea how to compile and all that. Might ask a friend of mine if he can, then I'll mess around with it to see how it dumps compared to Beetle.

If it dumps games that Beetle can't, that would be fantastic though. Really sad that Tomba 2 and the 3D Gex games don't dump properly with Beetle.

The texture dumps in Duckstation will probably look better at first sight, because it doesn't dump textures in multiple palettes as Beetle does. But if you look closer you will encounter a number of issues. I did some digging in my old project folders, to find some screenshots.

Here is one example: Character sprites in Grandia come with two textures. One of them is the shadow:

Unbenannt.PNG

Duckstation dumps just one texture, which will replace both textures in game.

Unbenannt2.PNG

So your character won't have a shadow, it will mirrored instead (or as in this case the character itself becomes the shadow).

Another example: There are clashes in file names. These three textures have all the same file name:

Unbenannt3.PNG

So they will overwrite each other.

Also issues with transparency: Actually Duckstation is not really replacing the textures, it just puts the new textures on top of the old ones. So if you have textures which are surrounded by transparency and the original textures are a bit bigger than your replacements, you will see the outlines of the original, as the following screenshot shows:

vlcsnap-2024-03-19-17h39m04s451.png

And another issue is that some animations are dumped as a single texture instead of multiple textures. So if you replace them you will stop the animation. The following video shows it with the golden hud at the top of the screen. Also fade ins/fade outs, if someone casts a spell, has been stopped.

Without texture replacements

With texture replacements

These are just some examples that I documented. I'm sure there are more issues. Beetle doesn't have these issues, but it has other issues instead (the github link that I've posted above mentions some of them). As I said, both emus don't do well with texture replacements. I mean there is a reason why there are hardly any PS1 texture packs...

If you happen to get the PS1 retexturing properly working, Silent Hill is an absolute must. All 3D Models too, might be a little bit easier than pre-rendered things (resident evil, etc).

Already tried.

Silent Hill is a bust, only dumps garbage. Resident Evil is an issue due. to the pre-rendered backgrounds. I'm currently busy with Dino Crisis 1, it's coming along nicely. Sadly, Dino Crisis 2 is out, once again, because of the pre-rendered backgrounds. They dump fine but they don't upscale at all, so you have these crisp character models and a nice UI against a pixellated background :(

One game I always hoped about getting a texture pack was Dragon Quest VII for ps1. Is that something that could be done?

Dino Crisis is a win for sure. You don't need to do Resident Evil honestly, people have already upscaled those entire games for the Dolphin emulator. I'm talking every single thing in 2/3, including FMV replacements. Silent Hill though? Apparently it's been done:
Just don't know why people have been sharing those textures about. So it's possible?

That one was made by a friend of mine, it took three years and a lot of manual editing. And I have done it to the PS2 titles. But we might never share them.

Do you mean Silent Hill? Even if they were released quietly, I'd genuinely really love to have access to those textures.

Hello all.

I've recently started doing some texture packs for our Discord members and they seem to be enjoying them so I thought I'd share them here as well.

I pay for my own hosting and these packs take a lot of time to make.

If anyone is willing, I do have a PayPal (our Discord owner helped me set it up)

Please don't feel obligated, all packs are available freely. I hope you enjoy them :)

Here is a link to my PS1 textures. (Pls note they only work on Beetle PSX HW in Retroarch, if anyone can get them to work on Swanstation or Duckstation, that would be fantastic. Instructions to get them working on Beetle are included in the folder).

Sir,You are the King of Texture Packs with loyal knights surrounding. These HD remakes are childhoods reborn. I hv it on PS3 but in case of a system fail and those who haven't played it or Tried It in HD, "Odin Sphere" would be the last and greatest Feat for the PCSX2 T-Pax.

Thank you so much, I appreciate that.

Funny you should mention Odin Sphere, one person on my Discord loves that game and I'm going to be doing it for him as a surprise. I'll definitely drop it here once I'm done.

I'm just finishing up Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect along with a few other games, then I'll start on Odin Sphere :)
