Meta announces the Quest 3 VR headset

The successor to the popular Meta Quest 2 virtual reality headset has just been announced. Mark Zuckerberg revealed the Meta Quest 3, which is a "next-gen" VR device, promising twice the power over the previous headset. Meta promises that the Quest 3 will also be more comfortable than the 2, with a slimmer profile. It'll also support hand-tracking right out of the box, so you can use it without any controllers. The Quest 3 is set to launch this fall for $499.99, and with its release, Meta will be giving the previous generation Quest 2 a price drop to $299.99.

This is cool, still not enough good software out there for me to have touched my Quest 2 in months though.
Related to what @codezer0 was getting at back on pg1, I would love to bust an absolute financial nut on a VR-using simracing rig, but it would cost as much as an actual racecar. The steering wheels, shifter, pedals, cockpit, motion motors, iracing subscription fees ... and then there's the cutting edge PC that has to be kept up to date with maxed out graphics hardware. For something like that, I would and could make great use of VR, but just can't justify the expense. With my married-with-children and fulltime employment lifestyle, I'm getting all of about 1hr and 13min of personal time a day, so what's the point? The only other use I'd have for VR is porn maybe, but again ... not realistic in my no privacy purgatory lol.

Like or or not, Facebook seems to be the forerunners in consumer grade VR. They've provided the most robust (so far) untethered VR headset at the best (so far) price point.

It doesn't matter what they're doing on the hardware side when they're ensuring that the software side dies while still in the crib. The only new VR games any more are Meta or Playstation exclusives. Literally anybody but Facebook stepping in to fill that niche would've actually given VR the chance to succeed this time.

Then that’s not the fault of Facebook/Meta or Zucc the Succ.. Unless those two have some exclusivity agreement or non-compete in place with potential competitors? Why haven’t we seen the Pico state side? Is that the fault of Facebook? Genuine question. Also, aren’t VR games still coming to Steam?

A friend bought a Meta Quest 2 and we had fun at a friend's house playing some games and Half Life Alyx. That's a good device really, maybe I'll buy one when I'll be able to.

The general consensus among all the players entering the VR market early on was that exclusivity would stifle growth immensely. After Facebook bought Oculus they gave everybody the middle finger and released nothing but exclusives from there on out. Afterward Sony copied that strategy, and here we are: the market is on life support.

Like what, though? What worthwhile games are exclusively Meta that you can’t get elsewhere? I can only think of a few, but there may be more I’m missing. Yes, I know about RE4.

Sony also only has a few that come to mind… My issue with them is that they try to lock their hardware down specifically to their ecosystem. Even the third party drivers created have issues and may cause problems down the line.

I want zuck to go away.

Like bruh, I just want to be able to play through half life Alyx without needing almost three grand for a goddamn 4090 and valve index just to even try. I literally can't even care about anything else on VR.
You dont need a 4090 but for vr I play alyx with the no vr mod

I'll buy it. I understand the amount of collected data and all...

But dammit there isn't another standalone headset that really competes.

and to be honest I really need to upgrade from my rift s...

I would like to see a new Sewer Shark game where you get to hunt MZ through the sewers of NYC.

I think I'll get it as soon as someone hacks the Meta bullshit out of it. Technologically, it is a step up from the Quest 2, especially if the new passthrough delivers on its promise. But that won't make me happily hand over my data to Mark *uckerberg.

Honestly? That’s the dream. Thee hardware is great, the weird telemetry is completely unnecessary…

The Wikipedia page is showing like five exclusives, but I think it's out of date and there are a bunch of others sold only through the Meta storefront which aren't being counted as "exclusive."

You can play Alyx with basically any headset, and since it's fairly well optimized you don't really need a super powerful card. It's not for you, sure, but this is a braindead take. If you already have a midrange pc in 2023 you can start getting into vr right now. I did on a 1060 3GB.

What's preventing people that want this to create an account only for the device? You know, one that doesn't have any worthwhile information.
If the device interested me, and required an account in some service, I'd just set up an account for it.
