This happens to me whenever I turn on the wii with a disk still inside. To fix it, I have to remove the disc, turn it off, unplug it for a few minutes, plug it back in, and turn it on without any discs inside. Then I insert a disc and it works... Not sure why it does that, but it's easy to avoid -- all I have to do is avoid turning the console on with a disc inside. Maybe this is what's happening to you...

EDIT: Note that the wii will cache the disc info, so if you boot it up with a disc inside and it's the same one as before you turned the console off, it won't read the channel screen image from the disc again... Maybe this behavior is what is causing the problem...

I've had 1.9g installed since SMG came out and my Wiikey is still going strong.

I don't think it's the update causing the issues. I think it's either fake Wiikeys or crappy installs.

I did a wired install, so I might try just cutting the wires and re-wiring it, and if it doesn't work then... I'll just have to get a new one.

Same problem here...

Wiikey was working great, never updated it and all was ok. had firmware 3.0.
When SSBB came out i tried playing it, but the wii would'nt recognise the disc.
so i updated to 1.9g hoping it'll help...
it indeed helped, now i could see SSBB logo in the wii channel...
after i tried to start the game, it would just lock up on a black screen...
i decided to update firmware to 3.2, after update same thing happend...
game showed in channel but locked up again...
i pluged the power off to reset and after turning back on the wii stopped reading backups...
checked for originals - still working...
took the wii apart and checked the modchip, noticed two wires touching each other..
i fixed the wires and closed everything down...
nothing helped...
tried recovery disc - nothing...
just doesnt reads any backup disc...

is that means my wiikey is fuxored? or is there something else i could try...

Well, just happened to me. Had Wii updated to 3.2U, Wiikey 1.9g working perfectly. Installed SSBB, played it for like 2 to 3 days and now the backups aren´t working anymore. Noone!

It seems Wiikey was meant to least around 1 year huh?

Use the 1.9b recovery disk and the wiikey will work again many users have reported this after updating to 3.2 and playing brawl, it seems that 1.9g + 3.2 + brawl= messed up wiikeys in some cases.
