Dolphin emulator gets a UWP port for Xbox Series S/X

1674500832763.png

The famous Gamecube and Wii emulator, Dolphin, has been updated to run as a UWP (Universal Windows Platform) application, which makes it compatible with the Xbox Series S/X console (and even Xbox One consoles, but to a lesser compatibility and performance degree). The developers of Dolphin have previously worked on a beta release (v1.0.0), which added UWP support to the emulator to run on Xbox Series consoles, and as of December, 2022, the emulator now has a stable release in UWP format.

Previously, the only methods of running Dolphin on an Xbox Series console was to either install an unofficial UWP port of the emulator into the console (which is shady on its own to the app not being the officially coded one by Dolphin's devs), or go the RetroArch route and get Dolphin as a core for it, and while using RA with the Dolphin core was a good way to cover any Gamecube/Wii needs on Xbox Series consoles, the core itself is greatly lagging behind in terms of features and updated versions of the standalone Dolphin emulator. With the UWP port, users can now have all the perks, updates and features of the latest Dolphin emulator in their Xbox Series consoles.

For those interested, the UWP version of the emulator is available in SirMangler's Dolphin fork GitHub page under the "Releases" tab,, with the official Dolphin repository finishing the last touchups on a Pull Request for the eventual merge of the UWP port. The latest UWP update having the following changelog:

Changelog said:
  • New ingame setting menu! Press Left Stick + View to access!
  • Ability to change the dolphin settings folder, from within the in-game menu.
  • Added a few missing file formats to the picker, including elf, wad and json.
  • Minor improvements and changes.

I cannot get dolphin to recognize the xbox controller on the retail version (haven't tried dev), but I've mapped the buttons on dolphin on the pc, did it using xinput/0/gamepad like it shows in the video, then copied it over to the config folder of Dolphin Emulator on the hdd. I don't think it's detecting the folder or something, and I'm not sure why. I set it up to configure the folder, so I don't know what's wrong.

Would you mind linking to a tutorial or something?
Right-click on the game in Dolphin, choose "Start with Riivolution Patches", click "Open Riivolution XML", then select the XML.

Then configure the game options just like you would in Riivolution and click "Save as Preset". Save the file as a .json file, and you're done.

That JSON file can then be opened like a game, either by running "dolphin-emu -e /path/to/your/file.json" on the command line, by dragging-and-dropping the file into a running Dolphin instance, or by just clicking the "Open" button and selecting the file.

Don't know if that works on the Xbox though, I've only used this with "normal" Dolphin on PC and on a SteamDeck.

I actually want to use it on a Steam Deck, mostly so I can play one of the Project M Legacy hacks, and also so I can eventually add my Other M Redux hack into the list without having to select the Riivolution hack each time I want to play it.
Are there any specific mods you use? I'd be interested in trying other games/mods out for sure.

Hmmm after playing with it a bit I’m going to for an update. It’s not keeping saves for me I’ve had to restart wind waker 3 times lucky I was just fooling around to see how it runs and not actually starting a play through.

Retroarch hasn’t been to bad for me so far. Hopefully won’t be long before this runs better.

Have you checked that the file path for the saves is in the USB stick?

if the port is the same, there should be ways to make it work.
There is a USB port on the Xbox, but can the GameCube controllers be mapped or not? I dont see anyone talking about using other controllers on any xbox systems other than when they are talking about converters like xwingman.etc

I heard you can edit the emulator setting files on windows, then move them to the USB, so if the controller works on Windows without any extra driver, it should work on Xbox.

Overall if you don't wanna try to figure things yourself give it time, someone will eventually find a way.
