<b>Clone</b>: A clone is a a term used in the scene to describe a flashcart that unofficially uses the name from a popular cart. Has nothing to do with the actual cart itself.

<b>Kernel</b>: Kernels (or menus, or OS's) are the main visual GUI of a flashcart. They're what you see when you boot up a flashcart.

<b>Firmware</b> Firmware (or bootloader) is the code written on the FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) (almost always of the Actel brand) which allows the flashcart to bypass DS security checks.

<b>Bootloader</b>: See Firmware.

<b>Menu</b>: See Kernel.

<b>OS</b>: See Kernel.

<b>PCB</b>: A PCB (Printed Circuit Board) is essentially what holds all the hardware including the contacts of a flashcart.

<b>Wood</b>: An alternative kernel for original R4, Acekard RPG and R4iDSN/R4i Gold flashcarts made by Yellow Wood Goblin.

...and more coming soon.

r4ids.cn new flashcard sold are 3ds compatible, but older sold in past no because they didn't release a 3ds firmware update until now 18 april . maybe in future they will release one.
r4i-sdhc.com never released any firmware update so is a bad example of firmware support

this is a nice project and a useful topic. i've pinned it for now. please keep it updated. i hope that user comments in this thread add info like firmware updates, kernel updates, review links, problems, etc.

the r4idsn and r4i gold (.cn team) are not 3ds compatible. the r4idsn 3ds and r4i gold 3ds have new controller chip code which allows them to be updated for the 3ds. the previous cards can only be updated for the dsi. they should be moved into that section and the 3ds version added to the 3ds section.

i can quote an on-going e-mail conversation with the team if you need proof =)

you can see images here of the different chips: http://www.r4idsn.com/about.asp

BTW R4-pro is not a clone of R4iDSN, since it can't run the Official wood r4 for that cart.
I still can't understand what clone it is, it even works with AKAIO, WOOD M3, Catboy's quadboot thingy, and YSmenu (Well... Almost...).
Wait a second, what R4 Clone works with The Quad-Boot?
