Seriously. Either take out your card and update, or reboot to nyx and use the USB function from there. Don't use ftp, or any homebrew MTP stuff. package3 and stratosphere.romfs WILL NOT UPDATE otherwise.

It's mind-numbing how many people have been opening issues in github, when there issue is out of date files, even though they swear they updated, yet I KNOW the issue is out of date files (because they usually get an error having to do with package3... or fusee-secondary (because they didn't update fusee.bin on their dongle). And it's usually posted to the hekate github, instead of Atmosphere (which is probably a good thing, because SciresM is the last person we would want pissed off).

I mean is this really an issue for people? I Figured this out the first time I tried to update and noticed the version in settings wasn't updated. at that point my brain went to ok so the files weren't overwritten because they are in use while Atmosphere is loaded

Do you need to run any software from your PC to use USB via Nyx?

I use a usb c SD card reader to load files from my iPad but am curious if i can just skip that step

No special software on the PC. The Switch just connects instantly, and you have access to the SD card content. It's really the best way to modify stuff on the SD card, because, as was mentioned above, removing and inserting the SD card too often could damage the port. I'm on linux, but it should also work on Windows.

I guess I’ll have to try in iPadOS and report back in that case!

This is a launch model console and I’ve been removing the SD card ever since you could first mod it. It’s honestly a miracle my SD slot hasn’t broken yet, and I no longer wanna push my luck lmao

Yep, I would have done this. After some head scratching and probably testing with another microsd card I would have worked it out. Perhaps a note on updating in the Atmosphere readme might help with this? Unless I'm missing it I don't see that info anywhere in the Github repo.

As I said... lots of people opened issues where package3 wasn't updated. few more were using outdated fusee (which actually WOULD update... but it's a separate download, so...). If your curious, just look at some of the closed issues over at hekate's github page.

Removing the sd card honestly just shouldn't be recommended that much tbh. Hekate ums is the way to go.
Because of how the reader is made over time the connector will get damaged.

Agree and disagree because the same thing could apply to the USB C Port on the switch. if you remove your card a million times yes but once a month wont hurt. I always taken out my card and updated my files which is why I rarely update unless there is an URGENT NEED.

Still on 13.1.0 all my games work!

Nope! AIO Updater :P

Nah mate, I've been FTPing fine for years? I need to try it now since I haven't used FTP however for the latest updates since 12.X
yeah, this used to work fine, but at some point rather recently - it might have been with release 1.0.0 of atmosphere - certain atmosphere system files are read only with atmosphere booted, which means you can not overwrite them using FTP.

Yep, it was done because it could create some weird situations, where things got read from the sd by atmosphere later on, and because the file was modified, it was reading incompatible data.

The SD Port on the switch is still much more fragile then the usb-c port, because of how its connected internally, so reducing the strain on it, by only changing the SD when needed it still a good idea.
And Hekates USB-tools are perfect for most situations, so there is rarely a need to remove the SD-card.

Yeah, no, this doesn’t work any more. I updated recently from 13.x to latest and noticed via FTP it didn’t copy several files and wouldn’t copy them manually. Idk why I even tried via ftp, I usually pop the SD out..
fäck... oh well. AIO Switch Updater it is now on then.

It would be nice if Atmosphere added an update folder where anything in it would replace the existing Atmosphere files at boot. Or have some sort of API where it will replace certain CFW files then force a reboot like how Nintendo does it with OFW. The way it is now is annoying because it means you can't update CFW if the only device you have with you is your Switch. Also makes it harder for people new to CFW to update. I still think a major reason SXOS was so popular was because unzipping Atmosphere files to the correct place is genuinely difficult for people who aren't balls deep in to this stuff like we are. It's amazing how incompetent the average person is with technology considering how we're surrounded by it every second of our lives. If people were as good with tech as GBATemp users and scene devs like to believe Apple's Genius bar and Walmart's Geek Squad would be out of business.
