Elon Musk buys out Twitter for $44 billion, plans to take company private

asdasddsadadas.png

We've long become used to gaming industry buyouts; between Microsoft and Sony's recent acquisitions, and future rumors, it's of little surprise to see a smaller studio scooped up by an infinitely larger one. But over in the tech world, there's been a buyout a little weirder than usual; on Monday, Twitter was bought by the ever-eccentric world's richest man, Elon Musk. The cost of the deal totals a staggering $44 billion--$54.20 per share of stock. Following this, Musk plans to make Twitter a privately-owned company, and the full acquisition is set to take place later in 2022.

In regards to the buyout, Elon Musk stressed that he wants to improve Twitter by adding new features, making the site's algorithms open source, and focusing on "free speech", claiming that the company has a lot of potential. Employees of Twitter expressed frustration at the lack of transparency from the higher-ups within the company about the buyout, and nervousness as they were unsure what would happen to their jobs, as Musk plans to make drastic changes in the future.

"Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated," said Mr. Musk. "I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it."

He values free speech, but first order of business will likely be to shut down that Twitter account that publishes the whereabouts of his private jet :)
A lot of people are thinking that too, however I'm unsure if he'll do that straight up. He did offer money last time, and while it may be a security issue having that data tracked, it still is an ingenious setup the person made. He'd most likely get him to alter how data is displayed in order to provide some level of security for people. Still, the future is unknown, and so what will happen is as such.

I believe twitter will leave Brazil, this may happen to other countries for the same reason. I tell why:

Here if a platform do not moderate a content proven defamatory or wrong, courts will do (things of political interest obviously, regular citizen that get bullied have to do a lot to make an internet matter arrive to court).

If the platform refuses, it get a huge fine. If it do not pay the fine, or pay and insists in disobeying, the higher employee is arrested. So the path Twitter may take here is to leave, the courts will block it on backbone level and the platform will be gone for the most part, as regular people will go through the trouble of setting up a VPN for twitter sake.

I wouldnt buy twitter for more than 1$. Same with discord. Chat systems are a dime a dozen and all rise and fall.

What I don't get is why didn't elon just create his own platform?
Because it's harder to get people onto a brand new platform than it is to keep people on an existing one. There may be a lot of people who will leave after this, but those who remain wouldn't likely have moved to any platform he created from scratch. Many would stay on Twitter under his ownership than move to anything he had built on the basis that Twitter already has the security and infrastructure set up, while anything built to compete would take years to get the same level.

I doubt it, lots of people said they'd leave UK if we voted for Brexit - none of them left. Others said they would leave USA if Trump became president, once again nobody left. Some of these people that said they will leave Twatter have invested countless hours of their lives putting out their personal opinions, and they are brainwashed into the social media way of life, hardly anyone that says they will leave will actually leave it - unless they already planned to anyway.

the FTC has a say and considering his 'free speech' means unblocking people squawking violent reteroic and privitizing it would make it a hotbed for extremist views the ftc better block it over these concerns

Nice decision to pick out only a small part of the thread, replace the comma with a period. Someone may assume that's the only thing I said. I never said that they said they would leave, only that there may be people who will leave. People who actually act, not just say and never do.

Freedom of speech is back hopefully now they will be fair with the rules.
freedom of speech never left my soul. I said all the things i want to say irregardless of if they offend people or im censored because of it. when people ban me just get a new ip and a new email and curse them out so they ban me again. they cannot take what you do not give them.

Never used Twatter - too many woke, leftie weirdo's on it for my liking and I'd be banned within a day probably. Still hopefully Trump will be back on it soon so I can laugh at lefties having a mental breakdown and I'll be there to collect the salt from their salty tears.
I'm not sure all the right whinging snowflakes will stick around when elon musk starts charging a subscription.

So we might not get to see triggered meltdowns of all our favorite far right clowns for much longer.

It would be cheaper for Trump to come back to twitter than keep pumping money into Troth Central. https://www.unilad.co.uk/news/donal...ame-of-his-own-social-media-platform-20220425

It's disappointing though that his site never worked right, because that had the potential of giving us some real comedy gold.

I doubt it, lots of people said they'd leave UK if we voted for Brexit - none of them left.

Lot's of people left the UK after it's dumb Brexit mistake. 7000 finance jobs so far & 22000 left the NHS.

But then leave voters were never good at maths.

freedom of speech never was gone from my speech. I say everything I want to say irregardless of if I offend people or get banned. once they censor then you just create new ip/email and curse them out. alot of people just take there slap on the wrist and give up their speech. not me if someone tries to censor I just get louder and start telling them to fuck off and they are subhuman trash. if more people stood up for themselves they wouldnt need elon to come in and save their speech. those hiding behind elon are weaklings imo.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah

we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
