If you have a nand backup and can't replace the emmc board you could always make an emunand from the backup and boot that. Not ideal but it's better than having no Switch. Like others have said though it's easy to replace the nands on V1/V2 consoles. No soldering required as it's on a daughterboard. You can get cheap nands on AliExpress if they're too expensive on eBay.

Thanks for this suggestion! I think I need a larger SD card to create an emunand/emummc, mine is only 32GB. I'm going to go pick up a 64GB today and will give this a try.
What would be the downsides of running emunand rather than replacing my chip?

1. Backing it up is slightly harder. You have to use emutool on PC to back it up.
2. It's a little slower but not really noticeable (unless you have a shit card)
3. You lose 32gb of space (you don't use your emmc at all)
4. If you use emunand and plan to play legitly, some games do not work at all.

EmuNand is slower than running the firmware on the actual nand. It's not massively so and I think most people don't notice a difference but it is measurable. Since EmuNand is part of CFW you will also only be able to boot it by going through Hekate / Fusee. Obviously you lose some SD Card space too since you're cloning the firmware to it which isn't great.

You don't actually need 32 GB of storage for emunand. Hekate will allow you to resize the user partition to zero so you only need however much space the firmware takes up. I can't remember how much that is but it's not a lot.

Thank you both a lot for the detailed responses!

Cool, I'm not stressed about the firmware running slowly. I have a new OLED switch for personal use that I haven't modded and this is my old OG switch that I mostly use for playing modded smashbros with my roommates. I also have AutoRCM enabled and already only boot this console via Hekate so that's no real difference for me.
I'll look into creating EmuNAND since I don't yet have that knowledge and then I might need to come back to pester you guys with more questions about how to implement it if I get stuck! I think I will grab a larger SD card regardless of the user partition option, I'd still like to have plenty of room on my SD card for mods I wanna install.

What would losing that space mean for games that I have installed on the Switch as digital owned (legally btw) via the eshop? I really only play Smash on this particular switch but it's a digital copy. Have I lost that? Will emuNAND affect my ability to connect to the eshop and redownload it?

Grab a good guide like this one: https://rentry.co/SwitchHackingIsEasy

Specifically check out this page:

https://rentry.org/EmuNANDNewSDcard

…towards the bottom it talks about migrating your emunand by first creating a backup in Hekate AND THEN creating a new emunand using your backup (see notes underneath the red rectangle.)

Since you already have a backup we get to skip straight to the second half…

Once you have your emmunand just continue with the guide…

I mean, if they're in the emmc, you'd have them easily when you make the emummc. If they're in the sd card, you just have to move the nintendo folder to the right emummc folder in the sd card so that they'll be available in emunand. My point was you lose the 32gb that the emmc had if you go emunand

Hi All,
New to the community, hoping to get some help. I've been running my modded switch for a few weeks now and until today had no issues. Hopefully I haven't bricked anything!
I have the latest version of Hekate and Atmosphere. I have AutoRCM enabled.
My issue is that I can't boot into CFW or OFW - both give me the following errors:
'Failed to init eMMC.'
'Failed to launch HOS!'

When I boot into Hekate, I get the following popup:
View attachment 297224

When I check console info -> emmc, I also get an error saying that "eMMC failed to init!"

Please let me know what else I should check, I'm really not sure where to start debugging this issue as I'm a bit of a noob still when it comes to this stuff.
I fix these all the time with a reflow or reball. I try a reflow first and if it works I dump the nand immediately then write to a new working module.

Hey all, update. I'm unable to use the 'Create EmuMMC' option in hekate because it gives me the same 'failed to init emmc' error I've been getting.
Have I missed something? I thought the point of this process was to circumvent the fact that my emmc is borked.
Yeah…that was the hope.

you can’t get to the part about create EmuMMC at all without the error or you can click it and then it gives you the same error?

you can’t click through it?

no, so i get to the step where i can create or migrate an emuMMC:

I can't migrate because none of the options are available. When I try to use the creation tool (I select SD File) it thinks for a moment and then gives me 'Failed to init emmc!' error. I asked in the discord about this and some users are saying that creating an emuMMC is impossible if I can't boot my emmc so now I'm not sure how this was meant to work to begin with, I might be missing something.

Reflow or
Reball or
Rebuild

Most likely a hardware issue so the 1st 2 options are needed.

Yeah Ive ordered a new fresh chip on eBay since it's cheap and folk are saying it's easy. Couldn't get a local electronics store to agree to help me reflow/recall/touch any part of my switch.

Was just clarifying if the ability to emulate emmc to get around the hardware failure was possible or not since I'm hearing it is and it isn't from different sources.

Its not if hardware fault. It should be if software brick.
