I just installed all sorts of homebrew cfw to my new 2ds and I installed Pokemon X from a .cia, and it has shown up on my home screen. however when i try to launch it i get the error message, you must update. i tried downloading the update data from the eshop, and i can see both the game and the update in storage settings, but i still get the error message. then i tried finding the update data as a .cia and installed it the same way i did the base game, with fbi. still nothing. am i doing something wrong? i am relatively new to 3ds homebrew, i did homebrew a wii u though, and i like to think im fairly good with computers, but ive tried everything i could think of. will the system just refuse to update a game it can tell is pirated? if so is there a homebrew application to disable that?

tldr- i pirated pokemon x, its installed but wont update, ive tried everything. what am i doing wrong?

usually websites with CIAs give you both the game AND the updates. Download and install both from the same source, and from the same region as paper mario just said, and you should be fine. Also, make sure to install ORAS instead, it's the better game lol

First, OP, you'll never be able to update ANY yarr-harr installed game from the eShop anymore, that stopped being a thing about two years ago when they introduced the ticket entitlement check server-side and killed off the CDN downloaders. Second, it's likely that you've either got a bad update CIA, or a game CIA that doesn't match the update (perhaps Title IDs don't match?). I'd suggest downloading a new copy of both, preferably the from the same source.

Just an FYI @legosooner this isn't true. You can update pirated games through the internet just fine even today. If there's an update for the game it'll say so when you go to launch it and you can press Y to download it. Updates don't use personalized tickets and the eShop doesn't validate your base game ticket before downloading the update. To make sure I was right I went and installed a pirated game just now and updated it just fine.

To help with your issue, what firmware version is your 2DS running? The 2DS's initial firmware was 6.0 (unless you're talking about a New 2DS XL) but Pokemon X required 6.1 and it's updates required even newer firmware then that. So make sure the firmware on the 2DS is up to date.
