Proof that DRM is utter garbage and anti consumer. People should be able to do whatever they want with the games they bought, even if they use old DRM, copy protection laws be damned.

One of my pals actually had to pirate the copy of GTA4 because of that shitty, shitty DRM. thank god they got rid of it recently.

i agree, securom is one of the worst, only barely beaten by garbage like denuvo which actually makes games run worse
but the downside of this drm being removed is that gta 4 lost it's multiplayer, which was actually really fun

To an extent. Steamworks is the reason I can install and boot any game from 2003 or newer without any hassle. Anything older than that which wasn't ported to Steam takes a bit more effort. And when push comes to shove, it's about as hard to crack as a wet paper bag.

yeah, an unfortunately smaller selection, with some unnecessary incompatabilities like dying light, but drm free wasn't entirely my point
it was more of a case that gog makes sure every game sold on it is tweaked to at least function properly on modern operating systems, like the gog version of diablo


for context regarding dying light, the multiplayer portion of it was made deliberately incompatible with steam, and techland blamed gog for it, while gog literally has tools to enable cross platform support with steam

Unless you have a Nvidia RTX 3000 series which is over a thousand dollars you'll eventually have to upgrade your PC as well. But it's true there's definitely better compatibility from the past on PC than there is on consoles no doubt about that

This is irrelevant for your example of trying to play games you already own, you can keep the same PC until the components themselves break, they don't have expiration dates.

I've blocked updates and been staying on Windows 10 version 1903 because of the Forza games (luckily Forza Horizon 4 just came to steam) but Horizon 3 and Forza 7 have no steam versions and I'm pretty sure Horizon 3 is already not playable on latest update, I know eventually to play new PC games they'll force me to update.

Of course Forza Horizon 3 was cracked 5 years ago but it doesn't work on todays Windows Updates. That's what the point of this thread is about.

Just for you, I decided to download FH3 (thanks to Play Anywhere) and can confirm it runs perfectly fine on 20H2 (the latest official version of Windows 10).

True, as long as the console is not battery dependant and you can not put your hands on a replecement.

Not yet at least, they will find a way someday to force us to pay again to be able to play it, even if we own a physical copy.

...but even if you buy digital you got at the very least 6-8 years of it working. Longer usually because both PS5 and Xbox Series X are both backwards compatible.

This is the very main reason I don't like digital games, I never own them forever. Even if the new consoles are backwards compatible, the game store is not and if we want to play our games again, we must pay, again. That sucks!

So why screw over PC gamers so bad where you buy a game and can't play it in 3-4 years? Maybe most PC gamers don't care because the games are "old" but I don't look at games that way.

This is a very good reason for me to enjoy emulation, because I can play those "old" classics whenever I want to. Good games never get old, its just that newer generations are more into "fancy" than real gaming experiences, they prefer their games to look "pretty" instead of being a great playing session.

Especially a racing game where it's still fun why would I be happy with it no longer work just to buy the new version? I've never agreed with most gamers mentality of throw out the old to make room for the new.

This applies (in my case) not only to racing games but also to plaformers and shmpus.

Why not have the old and the new.

They don't assess the gaming history as some of us do, they threw away what they don't like just because it can't "compare" to newer games, but don't realize that without those "old" classis, newer games would not exist.

That's for confirming it works on the current version of Windows 10, I thought it would do.

Reading his next post in the thread what he's really upset about is a cracked copy of the game only works on a really old version of Windows 10.

Forza not working after 1903 is a well known issue...for cracked versions. There's plenty of buggy edge-cases when win10's involved but IDK if OP's talking about a legit copy or a crack

Steam DRM is the exception, it's noninvasive and doesn't require online to play. Things like Denuvo are utter trash.

Forza Horizon 3 was cracked five years ago according to CrackWatch. Obviously it's not gonna give you online play and all that, but any single-player components would still work.

I'd say even Microsoft knows that kind of restriction is not smart from a PR perspective, which is why they've been putting more and more games on Steam and Game Pass lately. I guess they think Forza players in specific are just more willing to shell out the cash.

Thing about at least some of those is that you still need to sign into a freakin' MS account just to play the singleplayer in games. I was gonna try the Halo Master Chief Collection port on a PC recently, and because I didn't feel like opening up another Microsoft account after I closed the last one due to security problems, and with recent events with the Microsoft Exchange thing getting hacked, why the hell would I want to create an account that's gonna end up compromised sooner or later?

I mean, thankfully, Killer Instinct 3 doesn't require a sign-in for its singleplayer, but who knows about the multiplayer, which, until recently, was one of the prime examples people were pointing to of well-implemented rollback netcode in fighting games long before Japanese FG devs were compelled to care thanks to the lockdowns.

If you have Windows 10 Pro, you can block updates permanently with a few adjustments to group policies, but do so at your own risk. I did that and haven't updated in a while.

Is it easier to just disable the Windows update services?
I didn't realize there was a way to disable them via policy editor.
