Can anyone recommend a cheap out of the box HDD that 100% works with this loader (especially for Just Dance 2015 etc) and that is easily available to purchase in the UK? I'm currently using a Bipra 320GB but when playing it will suddenly come up with a screen saying 'reading disc'.

https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Wii_cIOS_base_Compatibility_List said:
Sing it/just dance/etc. IOS base 57... Most musical games don't work with base56

IOS249[56] (rev 65535, Info: d2x-v10beta52): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0
IOS250[57] (rev 65535, Info: d2x-v10beta52): Trucha Bug, NAND Access, USB 2.0.

Maybe try telling USB Loader to use IOS 250 just for that game?

Hi All - thanks for all the replies and help - really glad I joined the forum. Just to clarify, not sure if I did a typo somewhere, but the drive I've been using is a HDD not an SSD.

I've done a few things since yesterday. I read somewhere that games ripped using the loader are prone to failure so I went to rip JD2014 using Cleanrip instead. Cleanrip threw an error mid way through the rip. I then cleaned the disc and used Cleanrip again, disc ripped fine.

2 things here - is the loader reliable for ripping discs and/or did the dirty disc affect the rip?

I was going to then test the rip but it was format I didn't recognise and 2 files. Gave up with that.

Reformatted the HDD a few times with different methods, settled on Wii Backup Manager using FAT32. Original JD2014 rip failed again but we also tried my GX rip of JD2, seemed to work okay for 45 minutes.

By means of a last test we have reformatted the drive again (WBM FAT32) and I downloaded the JD2014 wbfs file from elsewhere. I've also updated the Wii with ModMii.

We are currently playing that file now, 12 minutes and counting...

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Maybe try telling USB Loader to use IOS 250 just for that game?

I was already doing that, this is (hopefully was) a different issue I believe.

**Update***
Soooo - JD2014 worked fine for over an hour - no issues. Seems that problem is sorted! But alas I think I have a new one.

After JD2014 we left it a while, came back and went to boot a GC game. Loader couldn't find the HDD...

Pulled the USB from the console and reinserted it, drive light came on. Rebooted the loader and games worked fine.

So I guess my next Q is, is this normal? Do all drives do this? I assume its some kind of sleep or spin down? Is this going to happen mid game?

In my experience most drives that come with sleep timers baked in usually come with software than u can use to disable them

Its a very cheap drive to be fair. Would the WD work without mucking around with it? Or is it even worth getting a USB? I am getting to the point where I just want to play tbh.

Correct you need base 56 or 57 (i use 57) in slot 249 and put base 56 in slot 250 and you can also put base 58 in slot 251.

There are differing opinions, but the general rule is:
cIOS249 (base 57 or 56)
cIOS250 (base 56 or 57)
cIOS251 (base 58)

So if you run into a game that does not work on what you have incIOS 249 you can force cIOS 250 to see if it works. Base 58 is only used by a couple games as far as I know.

With either a Western Digital Elements, Passport or P-10 Game Drive that are only powered by the USB cable, I suggest spending the $6 to $8 and also getting a Y-cable to ensure the drive is getting maximum power.

The beauty of the USB powered drives is they'll turn on and off with the Wii, unlike some that are powered by an external power adapter and stay on all the time unless you unplug them.

The drives that have the separate AC power adapter seem to be a crap shoot if they turn off with the Wii. The Western Digital MyBooks do turn off though, I've used them from 1TB up to 10TB and all of mine always turned off. But my go to drives these days are the WD 5TB passport or WD 5TB P-10 Game Drive which are only USB powered.

Have you or has anyone else managed to find out how a USB HDD can be spun down before shutting off the Wii? Whenever I just shut off the Wii in the middle of a game by holding the Wiimote's power button or tapping the Wii's power button, the hard drive makes a beep that doesn't exactly give me confidence in its lifespan. I can usually wait about 30 seconds on the Wii Menu or slowly disconnect the drive from the USB socket and it won't make that noise, but both of these options are kind of annoying, especially when I consider that I can just shut off the Wii without a problem while using a flash drive.

@kingjinxy2 Nah my man,...
There's no such functionality to be utilized.
This is the very reason why using a portable external (USB powered) drive is so widely encouraged when it comes to the Wii. Independently powered, desktop, traditional external hard drives, or enlocsures made as such are meant to be in a setting where they DON'T have to be powered down ever. ie. plugged into the back of a PC, for instance.
The WiiU lacks the power support the Wii has in this regard. That's why "Y" cables, or as the afore-mentioned independent power supply cables are needed. (honestly, for my WiiU, I use a 256GB SanDisk usb stick drive that doesn't need the additional power, nor does it ever go to "sleep".

No, I don't think anyone was ever concerned with shutting the drive down. If I had a drive the kept running I'd just put it on a surge bar and once the Wii is Off flip the surge bar power switch so I wouldn't have to keep unplugging the drive.

@biggzsizzle has given you the correct information. Use a portable drive with a Y-cable and there will be no issue. If you buy one I recommend a Western Digital Elements, Passport or P-10 Game drive. If you want a full size drive the Western Digital MyBooks work great and they do power off on their own once the Wii is turned off. I have used various sizes of MyBook for many many years before converting over to the Passports and P-10 with Y-cables.

If you are not able to purchase a new drive I'd just put the one you have on a surge bar and locate it so you can easily flip the power supply power switch off when you are done using the Wii.

How risky is it installing a forwarder for USB Loader on Wii? I'm trying to work around an issue where the HOME button during Nintendont games returns to Wii Menu instead of Homebrew Channel, even though I've set USB Loader to 'Return to: Homebrew channel' (it works for Wii games but not Nintendont ones).

Wondering if I can get someone to see if they can find probable cause of black screening when loading backup Wii games. USB drive is a SanDisk 32gb (can't find a model name, but it is a 3.0 gen newer model) and it is formatted in fat32.

The weirdest part is that Gamecube games will launch fine, but Wii games black screen. Folders are all labelled correctly.

EDIT: Updated with USB information as I forgot it originally.

Hello,

what is your USB support ?? , in what format ??

what version of usb loader gx do you have ??

If you have a USB key ==> try the wbfs format.

avoid USB keys (often black screen or does not start

Prefer a fat32 external hard drive, for best results

Hi there, thanks so much for responding! I'm using a 32 gb SanDisk USB drive. It's formatted in fat32. I don't have a spare external hdd right now, but I also assumed that could be the issue. The odd part is that Gamecube games are working fine off of the USB drive, whereas Wii games black screen. Do you think if the Gamecube games are working, it could still be a USB drive compatibility issue for the Wii games? Thanks for your time.

Hey, sorry to pump, Idk if this is still active, I have a question, similar to Nintendont is it possible to emulate other USB controllers to work as classic controllers like the dual shock 4 for example? Since I don’t have a GC USB converter and my sister took my Wii about a year ago (is why I modded the vWii on my WiiU) and while I do have a classic controller it’s not particularly comfortable to hold, plus I always need double AA batteries installed in the wiimote, using a DS4 would be a nice alternative, thanks.
