I just want to be able to play backups. My 360 has a busted disk drive. Anyway to install a backup loader with just a flash drive?

if your drive is busted, you may be able to use the xkey, but I'm not sure if it requires a working drive. you'd still need to open up the system to get the drive keys, which may or may not be possible if it's broken.

Your console needs to have either a modchip installed or you can just buy another drive. Those are your only options.

I'd have to look in jungle flasher pdf to see how that drive is flashed, but an xkey would be better probably, no need to burn discs. that's what I'd suggest if you can't solder, though I think some drives might require soldering.

Even if you have a replacement drive , this doesn't give you the drive key which is stored on both the original drive and the motherboard. They must match. If your current drive can't be read to obtain the key because it's broken , then you need to read the key off the motherboard and there is no way to do that without a modchip or JTAG if it's an extremely old xbox.

Edit : Once you read the key from the motherboard , you'll have to flash it to the drive too, but by then , you won't need a drive to play backups..

Get a modchip

What do you mean by the current drive can't be read? How does one normally get the key?

I don't think this particular drive requires soldering. I had previously purchased a drive off amazon but got the wrong one and it required soldering which i don't know how to do. So with xkey I can FTP my backups onto the xbox hard drive and mount them without a disk drive?

getting the key depends on the drive or how to anyway. my original xenon had a 78fk hitachi drive in it. iirc, the way to get the drive key was to put it in debugging mode.

So , if the drive is broken to a point where it doesn't power up , it might prove very difficult, even impossible to read the key off the drive. Without this key no other drive can't ever work to play games on your xbox. I think it still can play music CDs though.

The drive opens it just doesn't read discs. When a disc goes in the 360 acts like there is nothing in it.

Then it's still possible to read the key from it, if you have the hardware. If you are a bit handy you might be able to build a probe yourself, and if you are computer savvy, make the whole thing work.

Have you tried anything at all to get the drive to work ? There might be possible adjustments to the laser to get things working a bit. Lasers should be cheap. What's the history of your xbox ? Do you know if anyone ever attempted modding it before ? Might be the reason why the drive no longer works ? If no-one played inside yet , you could start taking things apart...

that's just what I remember from years ago. I'm not that much of an expert on it, since I've only flashed a drive twice.
