2013 - When the "Polizei" Virus had Peaked Season.

Used Windows XP Service Pack 3 with AVP Internet Security/Antivirus.
After a long Internet Session on Pages with some Pictures from Women suddenly this Screen appeared:

Everything was locked,no Taskmanager,nothing....after the Restart, the PC was completely locked.:rofl2:

I'm curious, as always...
Do you have a similar story?
Have you scanned your system for one lately?
What's your favourite Software to remove viruses?
When was the last time you dealt with a virus? Where you able to get rid of it?
The last time I had a virus was last year because of Utorrent, my computer was slow and crashing randomly, so I had taken the computer for repair and the guy formatted my PC. When I got my pc back I was in doubt if anything that I had torrented infected my pc, after some research i found out that was Utorrent the responsible for my pc being infected.

The best software to get rid of virus to me is malwarebytes.

2008. I’m very careful. I have had the stupid browser window that you can’t close. You close it and it pops back up some bullshit about “youre blocked” and all. I just turned off my antenna and was able to close that window. Nothing got installed. After I close the window that induced this function, I turned my antenna back on and all is good.

Do false positives count? The scanner at my job is set too high, but it's something to live with.
Anyway... Couple of weeks ago, I had to scan the present addresses on a location (ip-range). The tool for that hasn't changed in years (netscan) and it's on the network for all those times. Regardless, the scanner marked it as' a tool that can detect network activity '.

I think my colleague leaves it at this setting as it gives him something to do.

At home, I'm running Linux. Hassle free since at least a year (well... In terms of viruses, that is).

LOL... I remember that screen from my previous job! (about 8 to 10 years ago now). A few of our customers /clients had this. One even just paid up before contacting us ('... But that didn't work :(').
The solution was to log in with a different account (local administrator).
Though I saw right through it, I was impressed with its quality. I mean... Prior to that, it were amateur images. This was in flawless Dutch (or French... It came in many languages, perfectly tailored to the user) and had the Belgian police logo. If it wasn't for that weird 'ukash' payment, I would perhaps even believed it.

Those early ransomware was fairly harmless because of not actually doing any harm to the data. Okay, it locked the installed Windows OS. Anybody able to boot a live Linux could backup their data and reinstall Windows if they had no clue how to remove that garbage (and I personally always reinstalled Windows on infected computers brought to me). We had one in Germany in the name of "Gesellschaft zur Verfolgung von Urheberrechtsverletzungen (GVU)" → Society for the Prosecution of Copyright Infringement. A friend had called them and asked them to unlock his computer. The girl on the other end was frazzled because her phone would not stop ringing and told him (and a thousand other callers) that GVU had nothing to do with this.

I have used the Kaspersky Live Rescue Disc/USB for doing this but as you said,I also made an fresh install after I had "backup my Data".....:shy:

In 2018, I had this Macbook air (edit: not hair) my family bought me in 2017 and tried to download an illegal copy of a game and I didn't set up an antivirus software, so there was just a lot of random tabs that were opening while I was browsing on the internet, mostly NSFW websites ads, and then it just started downloading a lot of things and saturating my storage space.

I don’t remember getting virus on pc even though I used to surf alot of porn sites and cracked pc games sites. Maybe since windows xp or vista. Never installed antivirus as well.

I got windows errors and had to reinstall windows more than any virus hehe.

One day I told myself "hey, I should try to launch virus on my virtual machine, the one we gave me at school are too easy to fix"

I downloaded a .zip archive of virus, I launch them all, it escaped my vm, pikachu face I wiped my hard drive and reinstalled windows

I even did a thread with screenshot : https://gbatemp.net/threads/i-got-a-virus.569432/

On my own PC, literally haven't dealt with one since switching to Linux back in 2006. Before that, I think the last time was during my XP days when I was a kid looking for "free games."

About a month ago. I work as an IT System Admin and one of the servers got infected. We were able to catch it and stop it before it did anything. The thing that sucks is that the entire department had to look into it and write a report about it and how we could prevent it in the future.

If you are asking in my personal life...been easily 5+ years.
