I bought a modded Wii from a person and I was not told the internal drive doesn't work, it gives me an ERROR message.

this guy told me that any modded Wii the drive will not work
and he would not take a return.

Is there any way to get it to work?

I am not very tech savvy but can do basic things
I am just afraid if I do something wrong I will wreck it permanently.

I am hoping someone could help

Thanks, Bar

We need more information to be able to help you. What error do you get. Simply "An error has occurred." or a blue screen containing 002 ?

You should already have the Homebrew Channel installed, so please provide a SysCheck from your Wii. It might help finding any software related issues.

Then try this: Extract Cleanrip to your SD if it is not already there. https://github.com/emukidid/cleanrip/releases
Now provide a FAT32 formatted USB HDD (best is a 3.5" drive with it's own power supply) or simply use your SD if it has enough memory for dumping a complete disc (GameCube disc about 1.3GB and Wii disc about 4.3GB).

Try copying a genuine, non scratched GameCube and/or Wii disc. This simply reads the disc from start to finish.

As I told you in your introduction thread: A softmodding a Wii does not automatically render the drive useless. It can have hardware reasons too. The lens can be dirty and… The Wii consoles are aging and optical drives with moving parts and lasers wear down over time.

I think you want to use ios58 with cleanrip. I think I had to install it or modify it back on the wii. I vaguely remember using cleanrip with my cube collection, I think. I then put the games on multi iso discs, because I have a modchip in my wii, a wiikey version 1. dunno if it still works as I softmodded my wii at some point. my wii still works (turned it on a few days ago), but I'm using the wii's hdd on the virtual wii now.

Okay, it is not a 002 blue screen. Would have been too easy.
I've seen error this unspecific and non-helpful message on mechanical problems and on loading backup DVD-R from the disc channel while not forcing a cIOS.

Now please upload a SysCheck and try if CleanRip can copy a game to HDD/SD.

I'm sorry I know nothing about this system.
I am not a gamer (was just hoping to get a Wii with the games I wanted already added to play.)

Not knowing about the system is not a problem. Not hard to learn the basics.

My ideas target the question: Hardware or software problem?
  • SysCheck will tell us what is installed on your Wii (might reveal software problems)
  • CleanRip simply reads the disc (might reveal hardware problems). Only use legit discs, no backups for the test.
You should have the Homebrew Channel on your System Menu. Starting the HB Channel shows all applications that are on the SD in the folder apps. Therefore please put SysCheck and Cleanrip on your SD (hopefully more than 4.3GB free if the SD is the target for the ripping process) and run those two from HB Channel.
SysCheck should put the report on the SD and CleanRip will ask a few questions before attempting to read the disc.

Look, I really want to help you, but what shall I do? I can't directly do it. I can't touch your console and have a look myself. Running the two apps does not mess up anything – they do not write to the Wii NAND; they do no further modification at all.

If you're not confident enough to do the troubleshooting following advise on the forum, maybe you have somebody who is able to help you.
If you are able to open up the console and clean the laser it should be not a big deal to put some files on the SD and run the programs.
====================

This is what you should put on an empty, FAT32 formatted SD to put it into your Wii (folder apps containing subfolders CleanRip and SysCheckHDE with their files inside):

Start Homebrew Channel and select SysCheck from the list:

Wii02.JPG

Run SysCheck, let it scan all IOS. SysCheck should put the report on your SD

After running SysCheck the report should be on your SD

CleanRip is more or less self-explanatory. You don't need to turn on checksumming. Just try to rip a game and see if it is even detected and if any read errors occur.

what version of systemcheck and cleanrip do I want?

not sure which if one is beter than the next
Just download and extract the latest version of both.
https://wii.guide/assets/files/SysCheckHDE.zip
https://github.com/emukidid/cleanrip/releases/download/2.1.1/CleanRip-v2.1.1.zip

There is so much software in your apps folder on SD that you probably have more than one page filled in HB Channel. If it doesn't show up look on the second page – or simply use another, empty SD and only put the two tools on there for clear view.

I really don't know what else to say.

No problem. Take your time. The two tools won't do anything bad.

I'm not very confident when touching anything in a car. A car is a powerful machine and can be dangerous. Change a wheel, replace starter battery, replace air filter. That's it. Other than that: To the garage.

Well it took sometime to try and get the 2 files and see if they would do anything

life just gets in the way sometimes............

back to the program files ..

down loaded them extracted them and put them on a sd card
computer says they are there but the Wii does not see them when you click on the homebrew channel

now what do I do ???

I do have another SD card with games on it and it does see that card
