Tesla - The Nintendo Switch Overlay Menu

fhwyjbd.png

Hey all.
I'd like to introduce to you, Tesla: My answer to the growing need for proper ingame front ends for sysmodules.

What is this?

  • Tesla consists of three individual parts. nx-ovlloader, the Tesla menu and libtesla.
    • nx-ovlloader is basically nx-hbloader ported to run as a sysmodule. It runs in the background and loads overlay NROs (.ovl files) given to it.
    • Tesla Menu is the equivalent to the hbmenu. It's the initial thing loaded by nx-ovlloader and acts as a hub for you to select all other overlays.
    • libtesla is where it becomes interesting for developers. It's an easy to use library that handles layer creation, UI drawing and all the overlay UX. It makes it very easy to create a new overlay for anything
  • A frontend for sysmodules that before required either a homebrew or a config file to change settings or used sounds or the LED to give the user feedback.

What is this not?

  • A tool that lets you create overlays that are always visible. Overlays can get unloaded way to easily for this.
  • An excuse to port absolutely everything to a overlay. Nobody's going to need a title manager overlay. If you consider making a overlay, keep it simple. You don't have a whole lot of memory to work with.

How do I use this?

First of all, download the latest release of nx-ovlloader and the Tesla Menu from the GitHub Release page and extract it onto your SD card.
After a reboot, hold down L and DPad Down and push on the right joy stick to bring up Tesla at any time. Navigation works as you imagine it.
Similar to normal homebrews, you place your .ovl files in the /switch/.overlays folder on your SD card.

Notice

Make sure to use the latest Atmosphere release when trying this as older versions ( as the one SX OS uses too ) probably won't have enough memory available for this to run. Overlays do take a lot of space so nx-ovlloader reserves 6MB. 2MB for framebuffers and around 4MB for overlay developers to use in their overlays.

All these Switch mods, and nobody can seem to figure out how to set the screenshot's Jpeg quality to 100%...... (Taking 1080p screenshots at 100% quality while docked would be sweet too, but not holding out.)

Already been done, it's called bitmat printer. Not sure about the 1080p part.

Sounds like a Homebrew app, I'm talking about in the CFW itself, when you put the screenshot button.
Bitmap printer takes a .bmp screenshot when you press the screenshot button. It's actually lossless quality, which jpeg probably wouldn't be even at max settings (1.5 seconds on google suggests that the jpeg format has an optional lossless mode but it's not widely supported).

.PNG is the preferred format, honestly.

Not gonna be happy, are you? Saving as png would take extra time & memory, when you could just convert the end result yourself.
That's very true. But Nintendo could have easily not gimped the screenshots to 70% quality jpeg.

It's a good design descision for mobile hardware with limited internal memory, uncompressed screenshots are 10-20 times as big as a compressed jpeg, that adds up very quickly.

First of all,

Thank you so much for this amazing homebrew you created, it really helps me to enchance my gaming experiences.
I'm using new firmwares 10.0.2 and experiencing error with a game with long codes and i suddenly have to restart my console.I also notice if one particular codes is more than 100 lines edizon can't read and execute all the code properly.

I hope u can fix this issues in the next update and once again thank you for sharing this homebrew, really appreciate it.

When I push A button to turn cheats on, in overlay menu, few other cheats turn on by themselves. I read somewhere that hbg shop is causing this. I don't have hbg shop but i have a hbg.nro in root of SD, which is infact Tinfoil when opened in switch. When i remove hbg.nro from root of sd, atmosphere stops working. So for me to play this game I need hbg.nro on root of SD. Is there any solution to this problem? I'm on ofw 9.2 and atm latest.

Yeah you wanna keep hbmenu.nro. Maybe make sure you have the real one that comes with the latest official atmosphere release.

I don't know if that's one of the latest problems that that toxic hostile app is causing, but there are plenty of other ways to get games onto your Switch.
