Hi all, I'm new to Wii modding and have done a lot of reading but need help on this one. I picked up a Wii and modded it with the guide on the "Complete Softmod Guide" (not enough posts to use hyperlinks). Then I started using a spare 500GB HD to store games (I formatted it to FAT32 using guiformat). I picked up 20 games and ripped them with CleanRip. During the ripping process all checked out with a clean MD5 hash. Then I used Wii Backup Manager to convert them to .WBFS. I've got 2 issues. First, USB Loader GX will not show artwork for a bunch of the games even though all the artwork downloaded fine. Second, (biggest issue) is that only a few of the games actually are playable. Either, they will load a little way into the game and then I get a black screen or I just get a black screen.

Really the only games that work reliably are the ones that I ripped via USB Loader GX, but that only worked on about 3 games and froze during the rest. Has anyone been able to fix these issues types of issues?

Check if the games that are missing coverart have coverart available on http://gametdb.com
In some rare cases there might not be coverart available.

Which cIOS version are you using? d2x-v10-beta52 is generally recommended as beta53 has some compatibility issues. If you are not sure, then reinstall 249[56], 250[57] and 251[58] with beta52.
You should install IOS249 with base 56 rather than base 57, for compatibility reasons. The default game IOS should be set to 249 in USB Loader GX, as most games will work with that. Then, for games that don't work with IOS249[56], try setting the IOS for that specific game to IOS250[57]. Every game works with either 56 or 57, except for one game, "Your Shape" which is a fitness game that requires extra peripherals, so most people probably aren't interested in it.

As for black screens, make sure video mode is set to disc default, and VIDTV patch is off. Some games do not handle forced video mode very well. Also make sure your TV can display PAL if you are trying to run PAL games.
A few games use MetaFortress anti-piracy protection: https://wiki.dolphin-emu.org/index.php?title=Category:Games_that_use_MetaFortress_Anti-Piracy
For those games you may need to disable any sort of patching in the USB loader (return to, ocarina, that sort of thing), although in my experience, with ocarina off, only enabled on a per-game basis, and return to enabled globally, all I had to change was game IOS to 250 for Kirby's Adventure to make it work.

If some games still don't work after all that, they are probably bad dumps or corrupted.

Otherwise look at this thread, it might solve your problem:
I've tried most of what is mentioned in that thread.
1. I'm using latest version of USBLoaderGX v3.0 r1272 directly from source repository.
2. I've deleted GXGlobal.cfg
3. I've got IOS58
4. The Wii I've got is from 2006

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Check ....
I've done all that as well. All coverart is accounted for. I reinstalled all the cIOS as you mentioned yesterday. I'm in USA so my TV and games are NTSC. I don't see how they could be bad rips if the MD5 hashes in CleanRip all checked out. Weird thing is the only two games that work are Family Game Night 3 and Price is Right. WeSki appears to work, but it won't let me get past the screen where you have to press A + B at the same time.

If USB Loader GX froze during ripping, there is a chance your disc drive is going bad, but more likely, the HDD itself is at fault. You can do a thorough scan with CheckDisk which will scan for bad sectors (normally it doesn't scan for those) by running chkdsk /F /R X: in a command prompt (replacing X: with the correct drive letter)
You can also do a full sector scan of the drive with HD Tune or Victoria, and check the SMART info of the drive for errors with HD Tune or CrystalDiskInfo. Between those 3 tests, in most cases you should be able to tell if a drive is failing, but I have one drive laying around here that passes all tests, but any time I try to write more than a couple GBs of things to it, everything starts stalling, the graphics in Explorer and other programs glitch up, I can't launch programs, I can't even interact with running programs correctly, everything just stalls until the moment I unplug the drive. Obviously there's something wrong with that drive, despite it passing every test I've tried.

I'll try that out. But I was using a smaller flashdrive when I was ripping games with USBLoaderGX. I used the 500GB drive to rip with CleanRip and had no issues. I switched to CleanRip due to the hash verification and I read that USBLoaderGX had numerous ripping issues.

Flash drives don't work well with USB loaders.

They work perfectly fine, it's just that there are way too many brands and some do suck terribly for fast read operations. Either way, an external HDD is commonly the preferred way.
You're in the minority if you managed to get it working properly. Almost every new thread on here about USB loaders not working correctly turns out to be because they're using a flash drive.

I've done this with over 40 modded Wiis, and discarded shitty brands for this. Some flash drives brands work, others don't, some SD cards are great, others not so much., it is exactly the same with CD-R/DVD-R and all optical units. It's just about common sense.

tl;dr one of the options in usb loader gx is what to show (i.e. emunand, gamecube, etc) in the games' list. you need to make sure those are marked, or games that fit that criteria won't appear.

There must be a lot of shitty flash drives around. With SD cards, the choice is pretty simple, just buy SanDisk or Samsung - they tend to be the cheapest anyway, and are plenty fast for most uses. With flash drives I guess you have a lot more different models even within the same brand, and they often do not have guaranteed speed ratings so you don't really know what you're getting, and people just use whatever they have laying around, so I guess it makes sense.

Speed should not really be an issue anyway with anything fairly modern, the Wii DVD drive works at 6x speed which is only 8.31MB/s. I have never seen a SD card with a read speed slower than that. I do have one or two ultra cheap flash drives (of decent brands mind you) that are just too slow to be useful for anything, but should still at least be able to *boot* games, even if they have long load times and cutscenes lag... Not sure why a slow flash drive/SD card would prevent games from booting entirely. I think there's more to it than them just being cheap/low quality, as is the case with many DVD-R's. They should still work even if slowly, it's not like with discs where the drive was never designed to read burned media as the reader is part of the flash drive itself.

Hello,

1) do your games work correctly with your gx usb charger?
What is the "gx usb charger"? Never heard that mentioned before. I'm using the lower USB port for my USB HDD. (I've tried both just in troubleshooting.)

2) did you reinstall your CIOS (249 and 250) correctly ??
Yes. I followed this guide and got a green box after installing 249, 250, 251. (I used the "Offline NUS Downloads" method as it took forever to try to run it the other way.)

Where is that option?

Currently I'm using a Seagate 500GB externally powered drive. It's a FreeAgent so I modified the drive to wait at least one hour before spindown.
