Here is the info:

- Originally installed Luma on 11.11 (USA) with Frogminer method
- Updated to 11.12 (USA)
- Game icons, FBI etc are now missing
- Luma menu still loads when you hold Select upon boot
- God Mode does not load when holding Start upon boot

Updated Luma to latest version with boot.firm, but that did not solve anything

I don't believe it is a ticket issue because the games are not greyed out in the Software section of Data Management (thanks to Diego788 for this info). Instead, they just do not show at all.

My plan was to remove Luma and re-install with the BannerBomb method. However, GodMode will not load for me, which is necessary to remove Luma.

Any suggestions?

First off, don't uninstall Luma or B9S ever. This will most likely further mitigate any chance if fixing your issues. Secondly, when you hold select on boot to open the Luma options, does it say booted from CTRNAND?
(Also this is in the wrong section, but I don't think to many people will care. Just a friendly reminder for the future.)

Hello again, it says ""Booted from SD via B9S" and it is on Luma 10.0.1

Need info, what kind of 3ds is this?
(2DS/3DS/3DSXL/N2DS/N3DS/N3DSXL?)
Do you use a SD card or a micro SD with SD adapter or plain micro SD?
What size, brand, formatting (Fat32, cluster ?)?

Problem: your 3ds does not see the sd card anymore, hence after boot all installed game icons are missing (except the standard software on the device)!

Solution: BACK UP your sd card/micro sd to your PC or any other storage media you have! Then try to check sd/micro sd with "chkdsk" without arguments, if check says you have errors on file sytem or it simply aborts with error, use "chkdsk /f" (warning this could possibly modify files, hence the BACK UP).
If no error check contacts of sd card slot of 3ds, if using adapter check and or exchange adapter with another one, check contacts of sd/micro sd card. Use isopropyl alcohol to clean contacts if dirty/greasy/moldy.
Reinsert into 3ds and reboot device.
If still no success, use new sd/micro sd, format in PC (Fat32), copy files from your BACK UP to the new storage, reinsert, reboot.
If still no success, remove battery and let 3ds rest for an hour, than retry boot attempt with sd/micro sd card.
Report!

Edit: Thank you Turdpoocharger, now I understand this story.
Well OP has modified a N2DSXL for nephew. Nephew is probably a young not tech savvy person so OP has probably not installed godmode9 on internal flash (1: sysnand ctrnand\rw\luma\payloads\GodMode9.firm) to prevent accidently entering godmode9 during device boot and possibly bricking device. OP has probably only copied godmode9 payload to sd (0:\luma\payloads\GodMode9.firm). Now sd card is probably not recognized at boot time, hence no godmode9 access. OP could check luma on home menu (L+Dpad down+select) rosalina menu should pop up, check luma version left lower corner. Is luma showing an old version or 10.0.1?

From your other thread,
I modded a New 2DS XL for my nephew using the Frogminer method. I modded it for him during the previous firmware (11.11.0-43U).

I failed to tell him to ask me before updating, and he updated and said the games are not showing up.

I plan to re-mod it for him using the BannerBomb method. However, I am not sure about the best course of action. Do I need to fully uninstall Luma and revert everything back to normal, and then use BannerBomb? Or is there an easier/better way to go about it?

Thanks for any help.

You'll need to be clear about the distinction between:
  • Custom firmware (boot9strap, Luma3DS, GodMode9) longer installed or working on the n2DSXL.
vs
  • Games are missing on HOME Menu.

Great, thanks! Sorry for the confusion, at first I thought he broke Luma by updating because he said it happened after he updated to 11.12.

But I think that was just a coincidence, because he also removed his SD card after updating to back up the card to his PC. When he re-inserted it, he said the games were gone.

I will give the linked possible solutions a go. It sucks because he is not near me at the moment, so I have to be a bit of a middle man and try to explain things to him. But I will be sure to report back if anything in the post resolves the issue.

Before he does anything, tell him to backup copies of his current Nintendo 3DS folder and SysNAND *.bin image to his computer for safety. It would be bad to attempt data recovery or library rebuilding without something to fall back on in case of mistakes.

Okay will do, thanks. He did actually back up the entire card, including the Nintendo 3DS folder yesterday right before this all happened, but I will tell him to make a second copy of things in case anything has changed since then.

One interesting update: Earlier today, I told him to try re-installing the FBI CIA through Homebrew. I just wanted to see if the icon would appear on his home screen, since it had disappeared before. He just got back to me and said it did indeed show up on his Home screen, so I'm not sure if that piece of info helps with anything.

Anyway, I have told him about the link you sent and am waiting to hear back from him about that

One copy of the Nintendo 3DS folder kept on computer is enough but having two doesn't hurt if the computer hard drive has the free space. It's good to know your nephew is keen enough on having backed up that folder beforehand.

Yikes. Reinstalling game (Title IDs starting with 00040000) CIAs will overwrite and delete whatever saves that were in place.

That linked list is for reference on what to check for but is not a DIY guide in itself.

There is another thread linked to that post that talks about relisting or rebuilding the 3DS database. This is one of the more serious common causes of games disappearing from HOME Menu: corrupted title.db and import.db.

Sounds good. And no worries about the saves, I just had him re-install FBI itself, not an actual game. I hope that wasn't a bad idea though, ha. I guess I should have held off on that request if it has any potentially negative implications
