Hi,

I spend many hours working on my computer (Programming), and sometimes I get a little bit stressed and would want to take a little break before I continue working again, so I would like someone to recommend me a fun game that doesn't end (Not a storyline based game) which I can play during my break time, and I would prefer that this game would have some sort of a progression system that I can leave the game in the background (Alt tabbed) to progress something so when I get back to it I would have acheived.

I want a game that can entertain me enough to get back to my work with a boost :D

You can recommend me any game from any year, including retro games which can be emulated, from DOS and NES to PS2.

I get bored fast when I play Minecraft, so please do not recommend me a block-based building game.

I have a good gaming PC that can run any game at 1080p ULTRA ~60 FPS. I also have a Nintendo Wii U connected to the same monitor if someone would like to recommend a game on that system.

I'm not really sure what you mean with that 'doesn't end'. Do you want the sort of games that make use of timing techniques? (genre : 'you've planted a tree. Next time you can plant one is in 4 hours, 13 seconds')
Or one at runs in the background? Like... Wait. Before I mention it, I gotta say it's like Crack : incredibly addicting, but in the end not satisfying.
You see, the game's a clicker. It is just numbers going up in a nice fulfilling fashion. It's also free. So if it speaks your attention...

Sounds like you want a clicker game, but if not that I'd recommend Fallout Shelter or Slay The Spire.
Slay the Spire can be left open in the background because it's card turn based, but it doesn't really have that leave and come back feel you want.
Also Gemcraft II is on steam

Runs in the background. For example in games like Generals: Zero Hour and AoE you would leave the game in the background for a few minutes when you are building advanced buildings. When you return, then you are stronger.

Or for example wait for your turn to come in games such as Civilization. But computers are too powerful now that AI turn only takes a few seconds in that game.

I'm not really sure what you mean with that 'doesn't end'

Whenever I want to have fun I would just play the game, if it was a story-based game, it will end at some point.

No I don't want those clicker games which you find on Android, those are just straight pay2win, except that you don't even win.

Incrementals are the online clickers. They can be quite fun. I play a game called "Slavehack" it's very community driven, I generally do a few missions while working. It's extremely grindy though.

Let's see...this morning I thought of some games. Might still not be in the same range, but we'll see...

1) Anno 2070. Like most city builders, you can leave this in a reasonable stance just gathering resource (and like all anno games, this has a shit ton of 'em), and it doesn't have an ending. It's marked rather negatively, but that's due to uplay. And that, in turn, is according to me because of universities. This building is unlocked somewhat late in the game (meaning: probably after about 10 or even 20 hours of play). It houses a MASSIVE amount of upgrades (IIRC over 200), that each require a lot of time (about half an hour, I think...this goes down with the amount of universities, but you can't just plop down these things everywhere). The strange side effect is that these are more than permanent. Meaning: if you've researched one, it isn't just yours for the remainder of your game but is also available for you when you start a completely new city. So...there is certainly incentive to keep this game running on the side.
It's also the only anno I know very well (others are great too, but I can't say whether they have similar buildings)

2) plants vs zombies. Now hear me out here...the actual game (a very classic tower defense) is finite, but there is at least a near infinite amount of challenges to have in it. It plays in relative short bursts (even the endless mode gets overwhelming after a while), but there's plenty of things to collect. This is a game I would consider has "a fair monetisation scheme going". That is: you CAN pay real money for ingame currency, but it defeats the purpose, as the game itself is simply fun to play (as in: it doesn't feel grindy at all). And in time, you'll unlock a garden you can water to harvest more coin after a while. So yes, there is a clicker element in it (come back after some time to gain more coins), but it's more a zen one. I've started the game from scratch twice and upgraded nearly everything. Took me about 2x20 hours, but don't feel like I've lost even a minute of my time.

3) a more general genre: "rogue lites". These too play in short bursts where you start from scratch each time, but once you die you retain some of the gold or items you've collected (note: my favorites are rogue legacy and dead cells). Only 'problem': I don't think they'll do anything while you're AFK.

Why there doesn't exist a good tower defense nowadays? I remember playing Element TD in Warcraft III, it was fun and challenging.

Recommending mobile games that never end like Clash of Clans or Hay Day (both from Supercell, no pay2win required at all and no ads!)

Playing mostly during meetings, great usage of my limited time ressources :-)

Yeah it sounds like stuff like Clash of Clans is up your alley.
Crazy Taxi: City Rush on iOS/Android is great for quick bursts of play time and you can hire out vehicles to earn money in the background too.
Simpsons: Tapped Out is another Clash style city building game where you obviously have to do your fair share of waiting but keeping things running, fulfilling objectives and collecting/using money is good fun especially for series fans.

Two words. Oldschool Runescape.

Nearly 6 years and 5,600 hours playtime and I still have not maxed my account! I still have another 800-1000 hours to go, but something long term/progression oriented seems right up your alley so it's a pretty good fit if you ask me.

If you want more of a self reliant challenge I would recommend making an ironman account (same as a regular account but you cannot trade with other players, in other words you need to MANUALLY obtain all resources, obtain drops for higher level equipment, etc that you would ordinarily be able to buy from someone else). We also have some of the dankest memes this side of the interwebs so if that's your thing come on down to the subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/

Just remembered an important one: factorio.

I've only played the demo, but from what I gather, the best description is "what to play if you want 2D minecraft...and build it so it plays itself". You start with digging up resources, which you'll use to build machines that harvest said resources. These machines require other resources that you start by feeding manually but then later on build machines that do the feeding automatically as well.

While there technically is an end goal, the game is so advanced that even if you make it, you can always tear down stuff and do it again "but more efficient". The logistics are the sort of thing where you build yourself into a corner and have to think your way out again ("hmm...if I put that machine over there and make the conveyor belt loop as such, then I can squeeze in one extra other thing!"), which might be a plus, seeing how you're a programmer.
The only thing I'm not sure about is the "play by itself" part. Automation certainly is part of the game, but the game also features creatures that might attack if you step on their turf too much. I honestly don't know if you can turn that part off without risking half your factory in shambles when you return (then again...that could happen in age of empires as well...and unless I'm seriously mistaken: in zero hour as well).
