EmuNAND is a copy of your SysNAND that is run from the SD card. What this accomplishes is the effect of having a second console. Everything happens in EmuNAND is completely isolated from SysNAND and vice-versa. This allows one to run CFW and homebrew in one of the NAND partitions, usually EmuNAND, without compromising the other NAND, usually SysNAND. And by avoid hacking SysNAND, I mean not running any CFW or homebrew in your SysNAND. Sending a payload does not count as CFW or homebrew.

whenever I navigate on this forum and see your comments
I call attention and stop to read
has always very good information/advices

Thank you, its very nice

Hi guys. I have some questions related to hacking the Switch. Here is my situation: I have 2 Switches, one on FW 5 something and has a 256 GB mSD card. The other Switch is on FW 8.0.1 and has a 400 GB mSD card. The first Switch is hackable, 2nd one am not sure. For hacking, I have only done some save editing and am wondering what my options are as far as being able to do some save editing for some newer games such as Yoshi's Crafted World and New Super Mario Bros U. For my 1st Switch, the one that is hackable, I have in Airplane Mode and I have not connected online at all since save editing. I have been reading on here somewhat about Choux or whatever it is called, but know next to nothing about it and also wonder about EmuNAND. Here are my questions:

1. What is Choux? How do I use it and is there a FAQ or Tutorial for it?
2. For above, do I have to update to latest FW, or can I choose which one I want?
3. For both above, I heard something about Choux enabling AutoRCM, is that necessary? Can AutoRCM be disabled?
4. Can I create an EmuNAND on my hackable Switch? I do not have SX OS or that Dongle for SX OS.
5. Is it really worth doing all of this?

Thoughts and help is GREATLY appreciated :)

  1. ChoiDujourNX and its pretty self-explanatory. Launch the homebrew application, navigate to the firmware files, and follow the navigation prompts. The only part that you need to do on your own is find the firmware files as those are copyrighted so they cannot be linked here but the release thread has some hints on where to obtain such files
  2. As explained above, you find the firmware files yourself so you choose what firmware you want to go to
  3. While it can be disabled, its recommended to keep it enabled as it prevents fuses from being burnt and if fuses are burnt, you can no longer downgrade if better exploits are released on lower firmware versions such as a theoretical untethered coldboot hack
  4. Yes although only Atmosphere supports EmuNAND, not ReiNX
  5. For some people, yes. But to others, it might not be. That is a decision you and you alone have to make

Thank you very much for the explanation. But doesn’t that mean that I can’t really edit saves? Whenever I’ll want to play a game that I have edited a save for I will have to run it from the EmuNAND or else my progress won’t save, am I right?

Well yes. If you edit your saves and go online, you risk getting banned.

Is it known yet what gets you detected? And also what does “getting banned” means? I won’t be able to use online services at all or will I just won’t be able to play games online?

Piracy and cheating/save editing are some of the most likely ways to get banned. And there are different types of bans. For further questions about bans, I implore you read my thread about bans.

I have a few more questions:

1. Which FW do you recommend I go to from 5 whatever?
2. Should I switch to Atmosphere? Is there a Tutorial/FAQ for Atmosphere usage and install?
3. How do I create EmuNAND if I switch to Atmosphere? Would a 256GB mSD be enough? I have about 40GB free space left on it.

Further help and thoughts appreciated :)

  1. You know, I was recommending people update to 7.X over 8.X because lower firmware versions are generally more stable than higher ones but 7.X has this USB bug where if people exited during a USB installation, the console would become unresponsive so I will say either 8.0.1 or 8.0 but not 8.1 even thought 2 CFW support it
  2. If you want an authentic Atmosphere experience, you can follow this guide. If you want one that bundles Atmosphere with a better bootloader in the form of Hekate along with some homebrew applications and piracy patches, you can follow SDSetup's tutorial.
  3. Right now, Atmosphere's EmuNAND can only be set to 32 GB because it directly copies the NAND. Instructions can be found here

Hi I have the newest version of atmosphere and I'm trying to get retroarch to work. I read that in atmosphere holding down R and launching any game etc can get my into hbl instead of just the album. Well it doesn't work for me for some reason.

I have some questions abut EmuNAND though. Honestly, I looked at the EmuNAND guide and I really have no idea what I would be doing. I really don't want to mess my hackable Switch up. Is EmuNAND really necessary if I hardly touch online stuff in games? All I really want to do is save editing in the newer and upcoming games. Even in Smash Bros Ult, I barely touched the online portion. Any further thoughts and help appreciated :)

How did you update your files? If you simply merged the old and new files together, you may not have updated your Atmosphere setup properly. The best way to update your CFW is by deleting everything from your SD card except your Nintendo folder and possibly your Switch folder then placing the new files on it.

Thank you so much for your help :)

EmuNAND servers a couple of useful functions. For one, it can be used as a brick shield so you don't have to worry as much about bricking your entire console because if EmuNAND is bricked, all you do is replace EmuNAND which is a lot easier than restoring a NAND backup if SysNAND gets bricked. Another use is that EmuNAND allows you to have an updated firmware on your console without updating SysNAND. Its also a way of updating without burning fuses and using AutoRCM. Lastly, EmuNAND can be served as a way to separate your CFW from homebrew in order to stave off a ban. If none of these features appeal to you, then you do not need EmuNAND.

I would like to try EmuNAND, but could appreciate some help with setting it up. Also, I am not sure if I have a "Clean" NAND or not...

Can I update my sysnand to the new version if I have a 8.0.1 emunand with sx os? Will I get an error, crash or be unable to boot to my emunand? I'm guessing I have to wait till sx os gets an update to update the emunand but sysnand runs independently? am I right?

Well apparently I'm an idiot and it does work. Didn't realize I had to hold down R while choosing profile to launch.
I actually did just merge the files. So you still recommend I delete all but nintendo folder and put the newest atmosphere files on sd then?

Well I have not set it up yet as I'm waiting for it become more stable before giving it a try. And I pretty much gave you the best guide for it. Also if you do not have a clean NAND, you can still use EmuNAND. You just cannot use it as a ban shield.

Well TX just released SX OS 2.8 so you can update SysNAND, EmuNAND, or both to 8.1

While there is no right order, you can go game -> update -> DLC if you're paranoid.
