Hacking Switch on 3.0.2, Update advice needed please...

Hi All,

So I have a brand new Switch that's been in its box since I bought it ~10 months ago, the only thing I did was boot in to maintenance mode to check firmware (3.0.2) and check the serial number (it's safe apparently)

Recently a friend gave me an SX Pro dongle & license, so where should I go from here?

My dilemma, I think is the currently installed firmware... Should I / Can I (after I make nand / key backups etc) stick with the current SysNAND firmware, boot CFW and use Emunand on 7.x or > for homebrew / xci & nsp, or should I use ChoiDujourNX and upgrade SysNAND to 7.x and proceed from there? Is AutoRCM the pain in the ass it used to be? I'm not a frequent gamer so my Switch will run out of juice and I don't want to leave it on charge all the time (seem to recall it was a bad idea to let it run down), is there any real advantage to not burning fuses to get the console to 7.x?

I've done a lot of reading, but I'm still confused as to how to proceed...

Of course I accept I could be completely wrong with my above questions and there is a much simpler way to deal with this, any advice would be greatly received.

If the unit never ran any sort of CFW on the system before what you can do is turn on AutoRCM via Hekate, make a NAND backup of the 3.0.2 firmware, then create an emunand with SX OS either hidden partition or file on SD, and update that to 7.0.1, 8.0.x currently doesn't work. Leave the sysnand Alone for now if you want to keep it as low as possible. You can use the Sysnand to play online if you never ran any CFW on it before but only do that if the NAND is clean, running any CFW on Sysnand without a clean NAND backup make it "dirty" and you will get ban going online.

Thank you for the reply @Hayato213 just to clear up a couple of things and to make sure I do this right...

• AutoRCM, is it OK to use these days? Are there still issues if the battery runs down?
• Does enabling AutoRCM make any changes to SysNAND? I would like to get a clean backup first so wondering if I should backup then AutoRCM or the other way around?
• The Switch has never been booted, so never gone through first time setup, is this safe to do as it will ask to activate networking, can I avoid any updates while doing this? (Should I backup NAND before first boot to OFW?)

Actually, thinking about what you've said here, what is the need for AutoRCM at all in this instance if I am going to leave the SysNAND on 3.0.2 and run Emunand? Surely if I'm not upgrading the SysNAND I don't need to worry about burning fuses? I don't find using the RCMJig inconvenient each time, and could easily mod the Joycon to do the same job... Is AutoRCM necessary in this instance?

For me so far is alright, but the one I used with has modchip on them, and I constantly charge them, I don't let them ran out of juice. I have heard both good and bad story of both side. Hekate now has built in auto battery calibration everytime it boot into Hekate. If you disable Auto-RCM and has a lower fuse count with a higher firmware if you boot into sysnand without a bootloader you burn your fuse.

You should do a clean nand backup before attempting to do any sort of CFW/Homebrew stuffs on it, just to note that a nand backup doesn't prevent a ban or reverse it, you gotta restore the clean nand backup before going online if it never ran any cfw before.

Reading between the lines I guess I am OK not to use AutoRCM and do the backup, then proceed with Emunand. Fully understand the ban status etc, just wanted to make sure I have something clean to roll back to in case I screw something up

Beside the fuse prevention, there is feature of not needing a jig, if you like to use the jig it is fine, if you are not going to update sysnand then yea don't worry about the fuse and autorcm but still do a full nand backup.

One more thing to note , SX OS is notorious late with their update , 7.0.1 support took a month or so, create an emunand and update to 7.0.1 as there is no support for 8.0.x.

Yep, up to speed with TX and the delays, 7.0.1 should be fine for a little while, assuming I can use Goldleaf to sidestep most imposed updates for the time being when loading XCI's?

Just before I go do this, can I just confirm that I am OK to boot the Switch for the first time with 3.0.2 and "Set it up" without incurring any forced updates? I think I'll do a NAND backup before I boot it fully anyway, but just want to make sure.

Hey guys, sorry to bump this thread but I have a similar situation to the OP: untouched switch with 3.0.2 firmware, never went online (nor configured an account) and planning to use a sx dongle that I bought months ago.

Im not an advanced user so, could anyone please just confirm the suggested steps to safely setup the CFW? Like:

1 - use ChoiDujourNX and make a whole system backup
2 - update/install EX Fat?
3 - update firmware (offline, online? latest version?)
4 - install SX OS (what's the most stable version?)
5 - set-up emunand?
6 - fine tune (eg. auto rcm on, suggested apps?)
7 - play

1. Do a full NAND backup with Hekate along with the boot0/boot1. Turn on AutoRCM.

2. Boot up SXOS, setup emunand via either file on SD or hidden partition, update with the exfat option via choidujourNX, leave sysnand alone.
