Gamecube Lasers are as known very picky.
There is NO GENERAL VALUE that you can use on all gamecubes. It depends how old/"burned-out" the laser is,maybe micro scratches.....you see not easy.I can tell you from my personal experience,i had many Gamecubes (purple/black/white) and NONE of them had the same setting.I go there, tear the GC apart and make it as i described above. And all of them worked fine.I´ll never use a multimeter.:D only careful little steps by turning the screw with instant test.I´ll also make it with XBOX Classic and Dreamcast drives. And as you discribed, your GC Laser is fine while reading Games and normal DVD-Rs.A dying laser don´t do this. And thats what me thinking of your non compatible miniDVD-Rs.

But this is exactly what makes fun about modding/hacking consoles.:yay:

The hint to try another burner was great, please check it if possible.
I would if I had another burner! But I don't think I have one available. I may try changing the pot to 170ohms using my multimeter and see if that helps. But if not I'll look into getting compatible mini dvdr's in the future, thanks for your help!

@TimeMaster i have memorex mini dvd-r ones that didnt give me a single issue.
i mean, i dont have a modchip but they load just fine in swiss trough a softmoded game.. didnt had to pot and stuff, but i believe you only need to pot if you use a modchip?
as recomended try another burner if its possible.. it can make a difference..

the funny thing is, i had been slowly buying the games, and now i have the burned discs stored with no use for them...
thought about trowing the burned discs away but the trouble i had to find theese and knowing that theese discs will get more rare in the future..
damn i would send them to you if you didn't lived in other continent and shipping wouldn't make it a deal breaker

Thanks! And I understand! It's the thought that counts and I wouldn't ever demand anything from anyone! If I had another burner I would try it, might see if I can find a friends or something. Thanks for the comment!

I’ve been using Maxell mini DVD-R for years, always work perfectly regardless of the speed I burn them.

If I were you I’d adjust the pot back to normal and give those (or another of your choosing) a try.

Should be. The Maxell ones tend to be the same regardless of the packaging they come in. I’ve had them in lots of different packaging over the years and they’ve all worked fine.
Outside of the expensive ones such as Verbatim, the Maxell are the only ones I trust. Haven’t bought anything but them for longer than I can remember... But then I am getting old :D

Hello, I myself just installed Xen8. I was having the same issues as well, bought some unbranded disc off eBay. I followed instructions from almost every tutorial i came across, I searched and search all over i could not find a solid fix until i came across 3 different posts and i was able to play mini DVD-R without any DRE. Playing OEM disc i have not tested because i make my backups to keep originals in MINT condition. What i found that works for me and Iv been playing Twlight Princess for hours, what a great game. So heres what i did,

1.POT set to exactly to 65 ohms
2.IMGburn - burn at MAX speed ( yes wasted 4 Mini DVD-R burning on low speeds.)
3.I don`t think it matters how or where the Xen8 was installed but i installed directly on top on the chip.

I use to get DRE all the time on full size DVD-R but after those settings i Get 0 DREs and my mini DVD-R plays flawlessly. I hope this helps as others helped me.

I know some people are all in favour of it, but I never trim pots on any of my disc based systems.
I’ve always found that once I have found the right discs, I don’t need to. But each to their own of course.

Yes but sometimes its not always the discs. Every now and then a laser needs to be adjusted to do the job correctly, I leave the laser adjustment for last resort and it ends up being better then expected. Also to add in mind laser replacements are cheaper then discs on those top seller sites.

For what it's worth I spent December through January dealing with your issue. All those cheap mini DVD-r's sucked for me. Until I started using verbatim. Now I have no issues. It reads all of them no matter what speed I burn them. My pot tweak is at 180ohms.

Its the only constant choice you have left today. All other Brands/No Name mini DVD-Rs are unsafe in case of unkown manufacturer and/or Dye.Its a gambling game to get one that even works. With some luck you get one on EBay.

You can buy Maxell on Amazon.com they work.
You can buy the same on Amazon.de they didn´t work

I bought unbranded china disc off eBay a month ago and once i had everything figured out i order 200 more, pack of 50 for $18, so roughly cnd $25. I would say every machine varys, some work with POT tweaks and some just relies on the perfect discs. Ether or, we have solutions to run our favorite backups for others to see and trial n error themselves.

Hey, I'm new to the xeno modding. I have attempted it and failed the soldering part. I'm planning to try again, but I need to get some parts that will make it possible while they are still available. I got some discs according to what people recommended, but I don't have a disc burning drive. Are there any recommendations for external disc burners? I plan to use 4x speed as is recommended. Thanks.

You can try to burn them (if possible) with 2x or 4x Speed. Not faster please.
Without calibrating the Laser it is a little difficult to say, this will work for sure.
Also to say use only the Verbatim miniDVD-Rs please.

We should not forget, how old GameCubes and their (picky) Drives are right now.:(

If there was a simple Solution you would like,we do not need sd2sp2 Adapters or SD Card/Optical Drive Replacement Solutions.

Thank you.:)

I did burn at 4X as that is the only speed supported by both the discs and the drives I tried.... also, now SWISS won't boot anymore for me at all, just hangs on a black screen after the action replay screen...
