Google teases gaming announcement for GDC

google games.JPG
It has been rumored that Google wants to get serious with the video game industry with a platform of its own. Late last year the company revealed Project Stream which was advertised as "a test of Google’s streaming technologies in the US" and released a video boasting a 1080p, 60 fps stream of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey running on the same platform. Now Google seems to have even more up its sleeve than its streaming service.

A video released on Google's official YouTube channel teases "Google’s vision for the future of gaming". While the 37 seconds-long video is vague and doesn't show much (as you can see in the video below), save for some flashy shots from what looks like different gaming scenes, a full reveal is expected during this year's GDC on March 19, 2019 at 10AM PDT.

What do you think this might be? A dedicated streaming service for games? A Google gaming console... or a streaming console, merging the two ideas? Share your thoughts below!

Android powered box, maybe with a token effort from a few bigger (but probably not biggest) companies. Similar to Amazon's efforts a while back, Nvidia's shield, Asus' phone thing a while back and half a dozen others.

I don't think Google or tech quite has the juice yet for all streaming, all the time.

One of them will likely stick eventually, or have enough money ploughed into it that it does by default.

It'll basically be Shield TV 2, and thus doomed to obscurity much like Shield TV was, for having no exclusives. The streaming options on the Shield TV are pretty nice, as I'm sure will be the case for Google's console, but I can't see them doing much to set themselves apart from the competition otherwise. Seems foolish, especially at a time when Microsoft is seemingly contemplating getting out of the console race.

Then again, Google has plenty enough money to throw at any project they wish, so more power to them I guess. I won't be buying it though, no real collector's value in something like that IMO.

I expect them to try full on streaming - Google just hasn't been much of a hardware company themselves. Maybe a very cheap android box plus controller you can attach to your TV that simply streams it, but a chromecast should be able to do practically the same thing.

Nothing has been announced yet everybody already hate everything about it.

Good start. :creep:

It's literally why companies throw teasers like this, to encourage speculation.

We speculate that IF it's a dumb streaming machine + garbage mobile ports with SOMETIMES controller support, then it will be complete SHIT.

Needless to say, we all know that this will just be another streaming box. Mark my words, it'll get a little buzz for like a couple weeks or so, then it'll join the Pit of Obscurity alongside the Shield TV and the Ouya. Additionally, I bet that there won't even be a single exclusive. (Then again, if it's going to be a streaming box whatcha gonna do in terms of exclusives?)

If it turns out to be an Android box with real performance power and the price is right, I may pick it up. I like the cheap Android TV box I have just for video playback. If it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg, this would be a nice upgrade that can game too... But I'm only interested if dolphin can run at fullspeed. If not this would be worthless to me.

Legit sitting here wanting to brush it off, but if any company has the resources to break into the games console market it'd be Google. Also, seems a little premature to compete with Microsoft and Sony in the console cycle. They're no Nintendo, so they'll need something pretty game changing to make any kind of a dent this early.
