I recently purchased two games from the eShop, A-Train Sim 3D and Super Mario Bros. Virtual Console, then tried to dump the two games as .cia with Godmode9. Upon installation of the resulting .cia on either of my consoles with FBI, I receive this error code:

FBI Failed to install CIA
Result code: 0xD8E08065
Level: Permanent (27)
Summary: Invalid argument (7)
Module: AM (32)
Desc: Error type -1 (101)

*Archive not mounted/mount-point not found (fs)*

I have re-dumped the games, deleted from data management, re-downloaded in every combination.

I was sure to make a Standard build not Legit in every case.

Old purchases still dump and install perfectly fine on both consoles, I tested this with Tecmo Bowl Virtual Console

Cartridge copies also dump and install fine I tested this with Minecraft and Metroid

Someone suggested the SD card was going bad so I ran h2test and received no errors

Not sure if anyone else has come across this, maybe something I accidentally deleted off my root? Thanks in advance!

  1. Copy everything off the SD card onto a computer.
  2. Reformat the card in FAT32 + 32 KB cluster size with Windows File Explorer or guiformat (if bigger than 32 GB).
  3. Full Write + Verify test the empty card with H2testw. Do not skip this step.
Report back your scan results.

Thanks for the reply, here are the results from the steps you provided:

Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
Writing speed: 16.9 MByte/s
Reading speed: 17.9 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4

Excellent. You mentioned in your first post that one of your SD cards was reported without error.
Is this (source) card that passed the test the one where the CIA files were dumped from?

Not knowing if your post #4 refers to the same card, I should have clarified which is which.
What about the (target) SD card for the CIAs to be installed on?
  • (source) SD card = The card where the CIA files originated from. This is the card your 3DS purchased and downloaded those two games onto.
  • (target) SD card = A different card used by another 3DS/2DS system. The card that is receiving CIA copies of those games.
  • Did both of them passed H2testw?
***

Here's a way to hash check if your *.cia files are good dumps.
  • GodMode9 → 0:/gm9/out/example.ciaCIA image options... → Verify file.
  • Verification success vs Verification failed.
Use this right after dumping from the (source) card and right after copying the *.cia onto the (target) card.

What are the titles, and do they exist online as cia files yet?

it's entirely possible that nintendo changed something with their new downloads such that the process of making them standard breaks them somehow.

if the titles do exist as cias, compare them with interet versions.

I did run h2testw on both SD cards prior to post #4 and they both scanned without errors. When attempting to install the dumped .cias on the same source SD card I copied it from, it produces this same message still so the test results shown in #4 are just the second set of results I ran on the source card.

I verified the fresh .cia dumps with GodMode9 using your method and all of them displayed the same message "Verification success".

I'm not sure what to compare between .cia versions of the games I find online and the ones I purchase.

Did you got the call at @mIRChele's thread?
He's also experiencing the same problem. I mentioned trying a different CIA installer. On my [Luma 9.1, B9S 1.3, FW 11.9U] n3DSXL, I could not get SOON!2, Dev Menu, and BigBlueMenu to work; however, I did manage to get NASA v1.6 to install a recent title [Luigi's Mansion (USA), 3DS cart dump converted to CIA].

Try installing those games with NASA on a different SD card or renamed your current Nintendo 3DS folder. Attempt installations on a separate Nintendo 3DS folder.

Cart dumps work completely fine for me as well, it's only recent eShop downloads. I downloaded the latest .cia version of NASA, 1.6, and installed it on both of my consoles. I get the same results as I did with FBI (without error screen): All older games dump and install fine, only my recent downloads do not install. I tested installation on old dumps and new simultaneously only to have the same older .cias install as FBI would.

Is there a way to install .cias when I rename the Nintendo 3DS folder or do I need to inject FBI into Health & Safety App again to test this out? I mean, I also tried it another console with the same results, could it be a coincidence something was corrupted in both Nintendo 3DS folders at the same time? Maybe bad .cia installation?

I also tried your method in the thread you mentioned on all of the .cias:
Edit - You can also check if they're decrypted:
GodMode9 → 0:/.../example.cia → CIA image options... →Decrypt file(...) → Decrypt inplace.
And received "file is not encrypted" as the result

For kicks, try encrypting the CIA file in GodMode9 and then installing it in FBI.

Something leads me to believe Nintendo stepped up their security measures creating eShop titles that cannot be dumped and shared with other systems. If this is the case, this is bad news for us.

If the GM9 encrypt + FBI install doesn't work, may I contact you in PM?

Oh dear. If this is true, it's very concerning.

It's definitely something they want to do. i can believe they did something. again the easiest way is to compare an eshop dump that's problematic, but has a working version elsewhere.

I encrypted the .cias I made from the two recently downloaded eShop games, Super Mario Bros. VC and A-Train Sim 3D, then tried to install them using FBI and received these results:

Failed to install CIA file.
Result code: 0xD8E08065
Level: Permanent (27)
Summary: Invalid Argument (7)
Module: AM(32)

Not sure what to compare with the .cias, but if you let me know I will do it.

Try to find CIAs for those titles on a website like that ISO site and see if they install.
