Hey guys, this is my first post on gbatemp. I have been a long time lurker on the website. I have had my Nintendo switch forfor o a year and recently installed kosmos on my switch. My firmware is 6.2.0. All my nsps are working fine on hand held mode but when I try to dock the switch on my TV, games freeze after 4-5 mins of gameplay. This my first time docking the switch on TV, so I am not sure if this issue is due to cfw or something else. Any thoughts how should I rectify this problem?

Is your sd card formatted exfat or fat32?

Thanks for the quick response. My SD card is formatted in exfat.
No worries. I had the same issue as you on exfat. Exfat eventually slowly corrupts the data on your sdcard little by little, including already installed NSPs.

Backup your sd card and format from exfat to fat32 then re copy over

Also, I have heard fat32 won't take files more than 5GB. Anyway, I can live with that. I will split the files and merge them. No problem. Anyway, did you resolve formatting your card resolve the problem? It's strange that games run fine in handhled mode but get Frozen on TV mode. If it were a SD card issue, don't you think games would have frozen in handheld mode as well.

Yeah cap is 4gb but saves you many headaches and random issues down the road. This did fix my issue having (certain) games freeze when docked. I only had 2 that did it though.

Well I have had this problem with everygame so far. Did you have this problem only in the TV mode or in handheld mode as well?

Also, I was thinking, before formatting my card to fat32 to check if SD card had an issue, can I install a nsp in internal memory and check? If the problem still persists, then it might not be a problem with the SD card. What do you think?

You could do that but I would still recommend switching to Fat32 to save yourself from any further troubles in the future.

The clock rate, thus heat, is higher when docked.

Your console is overheating is my guess.

Replace thermal compound (both sides of heat pipe).

Not removed your shield have you?

Yea, that's not how it works. It's not like a disease which spreads through the SD.
Both can get corrupted. ExFAT has just really shitty drivers and implementatio on the switch.
But I, for example, have never had any problems with it (on all 4 switches).

i0m using exfat on my swtich. you guys recomend me uformating it to fat32? I stop transfering files to my sd since i can use usb installer fron tinfoil. What happens with my games if i try to format to fat32? Do i have to backup nintendo carpet to keep my savefiles and games ok?

You have to copy everything from your SD to somewhere safe, format, copy back.

That's exactly how it works actually.

You do have problems on exfat, you just don't know it yet

He's not having an issue while in handheld mode so sd card might not be the problem. Have you tried playing docked on official firmware with legit carts?

Also I've been using exfat on my switch since I got it last may 2018 and been playing nsp's, xci's, and retroarch from it eversince. I do know the risk but so far so good it's been fine.

Try leaving it on the home menu (with sleep mode disabled), does it still freeze?
To me this issue sounds hardware related. Something could be wrong with the SoC itself or the fan is not working causing the console to overheat and become unstable. I hope for your sake that it's not the SoC as that would be difficult (and expensive) to replace.

If files get corrupted, everything works fine except for the files (any reason why would it spread tho?). If file system gets corrupted, whole SD is focked and you have to reformat it (or if you know how, recover it).
So corruption how you mentioned it won't destroy your SD, just the files and wouldn't spread for no reason. Which is a big difference.

For crying out loud...

How can it be corrupted files if it is OK in handheld mode?

The files magically fix themselves when you unplug the console from the dock? Then fix themselves when you unplug from dock and restart the console?

There is a hardware issue here. Has anybody ever been inside the unit? Is the shield missing? Fan clean / working?

Heatsink compound problem? All crusty?

USB port pins all ok? Check there is no damage in there.

It could even be BQ24193. Erroneous i2c data causing a lockup or battery info problem.
Dry joint around the filters under the PI3USB. Heat expansion temporarily fixing / breaking things.

Maybe the OP could try a different SD card. See if it still does it. Then we can put this "corrupted files magically fixing themselves" to bed.
