I'm not familiar with those hacks, never cared for spotpass.

The reason why MAC address filtering is not recommended as a security measure is because they can be sniffed and spoofed.

I wasn't talking WEP vs MAC but, again, in general and in the context of open wifi.

Your sarcasm/joke/silliness detector may need a little bit of a tune up.

That said I have seen many times when doing network based hacks over the years the sorts of troubles people get into (the time people decided arp poisoning was a nice plan because setting up another access point on a PC was annoying being among the more amusing), this despite my normally deeming them system administrator type skills. Stuff like the OP covers is real skills to pull off, stuff like covered otherwise here not so much.
In some cases it might be the fault of people just issuing arcane commands and not explaining the flow/thought process (or possibly assuming others have it) but the end result is still the same.

I genuinely wasn't interested in those hacks so I'm not familiar with the culture around them.

Plus I've dealt with enough people over the years that anything above the most obvious of sarcasm can easily go one way or the other in terms of whether they're joking or not (the joys of working retail).

Though to be fair Mac address filtering is only slightly worse than WEP (as at least cracking WEP can't easily be done with most smartphones due to a lack of support for the required features*).

*Yes, I know you can use certain external usb wifi cards to work around it but that is a pain in the ass due to compatibility issues.

Some modern routers fix some of the wep exploits, so it goes back to being really slow to hack.

If your router supports guest mode then it's pretty safe to use wep and manually change your key regularly.

You may be able to come up with firewall rules so that even if someone does hack your key, then all they could use it for is playing ds games.

Interesting find and gonna start playing online much more with NDS games now! However, quick question, can you play online with games running with nds-bootstrap (eg: forwarders)? Just curious as I sold off most my NDS cartridges and just playing dumps of them...

Edit: Never mind, apparently it works since in a post Rob said it works with DSiMenu++.

Very interesting indeed. What about games that use WFC but not for multiplayer? Like, say, Warioware DIY, or Professor Layton, or Dragon Quest IX? Will the functionality in that case still be lost?

(Professor Layton is a bad example, of course, since in that case you just need a way to write the relevant save data to the cart. On that note, did anyone ever came up with a means of writing to Warioware DIY's NAND?)

Introducing nds-constraint!
After many years of trying to find a solution for hackless custom Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers, a solution has finally been found for the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo DSi system families!
Details on how it works, instructions on how to set it up for yourself, and Kaeru Team's official Kaeru WFC server that utilizes this new method can be found below:

https://github.com/KaeruTeam/nds-constraint

For those who just want to play online, here's the DNS server info:
Primary: 178.62.43.212
Secondary: 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8
How is this differ from the "hack" methods? Dont they just require you to set a DNS Server and ba da bing off you go?

Download content functions without issue.

This does not require any 3rd party devices. It opens the doors to many more people who don't have access to them.
Right but it doesnt need any devices to set a DNS? Am I missing something? The other methods only require you to set a DNS Too

Nice, if only mkds was compatible with wpa :/
No game supports WPA. I do believe there are mobile hotspot applications that allow you to make a WEP connection (same with PC versions)

BIG PSA TO ANYONE OPENING A WEP CONNECTION FOR THIS:
- WEP is HEAVILY insecure, if you have neighbours who are the least bit techy, they can jack your connection easy as fuck.
- So what I recommend you to do is somehow find an application that allows you to make a secure WEP connection.
- What I mean by that, is you should just EXPECT people to be able to use your WEP connection (Yes even with a password)
- So what I recommend doing is researching for applications that allow you to disable pages like facebook, google, youtube, e.t.c all popular stuff.
- While leaving the WIFI server stuff alone. This surely has to be possible. Good luck!
