Hypothetical question:

What if I make a clean backup of my systems nand on 5.x and after that accidently update and burn fuses because of RCM not being on or whatever.

Would the backup still be usable? Or is it not firmware bound?

Future question:

Image smash bros comming out and it requiring a new firmware. Let's say 7.x.
What would the steps be to make it work? Or can we just wait? Or are we out of luck?

It wouldn't be really useful at all. Sure you could downgrade but you must always boot with a custom firmware then. Because Horizon wouldn't boot since your fusecount is wrong.

I mean usefull in the sense that the backup is still usable to restore if something goes wrong? Even though you updated the switch to new official firmware and burned fuses.

Does that make the backup useless to restore ab bricked switch?

Yes, I would never ever restore a backup that doesn't work with Horizon since a lot of stuff can go wrong, it shouldn't but it can. Also Nintendos updates have't nuked any Switch as far as I know about it.

EDIT: There are ways to update without burning fuses.

Again I know all this. You are misunderstanding my question.

Imagine I make a complete clean backup of my switch nand, etc when on firmware 5.x. Then use an exploit like reinx. Add some games. Then update trough homebrew without burning fuses or through official means by burning fuses (Don't really care) to 6.x.

After that the switch freaks out and needs a restore.

I would use the restore (nand, etc) I made in the beginning, when the switch was still on firmware 5.x.
What would happen to the switch? What would happen to the firmware version? Would it revert back to 6.x if it didn't burn fuses. Would it be flat out incompatible because the backup was at the time of a different firmware. Would it just stay on 6.x but be restored.

The base question is what is the connection between firmware version and the nand, etc backup?

Well then I would try to make a clean install again, with your NAND keys etc. But you got a heck of a lot bigger problems if your Switch start to freak out because of an update just saying. But I do get your question. To be fair, I don't know. You would be required to use CFW that's for sure.

Yeah I don't mean freak out because of an update but because of a bad game install or some corruption or whatever.
I mean the whole point of the nand backup is being able to restore. But what info is missing is if the firmware version matters in that restore.

ive installed a game on 5.0 and realized it needed 6.0 to play so ive updated to 6.0.1 -on choinujour, and when i try to run newer games or newer updated/dlc games i get an error saying plug joycon in or turn off airplane mode then click OKAY and the game errors and closes and asks me to scan it to fix? is there a simple way around this

Yes, firmware is irrelevant as the exploit takes advantage of a vulnerability in the hardware of the Switch, not the software. Firmware is determined by serial number which you believe is unpatched but in case you wish to double check, you can consult this thread.

If you download Atmosphere straight from the GitHub and nothing else, you won't have the homebrew menu because that is not a part of Atmosphere. Its the same deal with ReiNX; many users downloaded the latest ReiNX and complained there was no homebrew menu. This is because that the homebrew menu is a separate file from the CFW itself.

Anyway, you can download it here then place it in the appropriate place according to the instructions. They can be found at the very bottom of the page.

I haven't seen the Switch scene for a while since I was on vacation. I've finally read up on the things that have been happening so far, but it almost feels like this all might not be worth it if you get banned that easily... Unless, online services don't really matter to some people, and to be honest, doesn't seem so to me.

But that said, I wanna make sure about something - if you backup your NAND before anything, and restore it before going online again, is it more of a *theoretical* chance that you won't get banned after or is this what's actually being done commonly with no repercussions?

Also regarding updating for the 200th time (sorry)... ReiNX works on 6.0.0?

Yes, a clean NAND backup made before hacking is your best bet to avoid bans currently. You also have to keep in mind you will need to make subsequent NAND backups because you cannot restore the same NAND backup twice.

And yes, ReiNX works on firmware 6.X

Apologies if this has already been asked! Does the latest hekate (4.2) work with 6.01fw? If I am using sx os do I only need the 4.2bin fil in the root of my sd card? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Yes, Hekate V4.2 still works on firmware 6.0.1. Not much really changed in that firmware. It was more of a stability update on Nintendo's part because sleep mode was actually somewhat unstable on stock 6.0

So.. I've kept a Switch on 3.0 (At least I think that's the version it's on. System Settings > Support > 2 reads "3.0").

I thought I'd give it a shot getting homebrew to run on it.
But when I instert my SD card, it says I need to system update...
Should I? What are my options?

Thanks in advance =)

Hello, I'm trying to figure out how workable the current state is for a younger person to deal with.

I would like to keep the Switch docked at all times and there is a Windows 10 PC next to. Is USB2 okay if you have a USB-C cable or does it need to be USB3? I've considered getting a NS-Atmosphere to inject the payload just to be easier to work with, but I imagine no matter what method you are using, you have to remove from the dock and trigger RCM with the USB-C connector. So PC or dongle is going to be problematic no matter what. Is this correct? (as in, the dock USB ports are a hub and won't help trigger RCM from the PC.)

With the tethered boot complexity, it's probably best to keep the Switch booted into CFW and always on since it has power from the dock. Will it sleep and wake up okay consistently?

How long does it take to restore NAND with a decent speed SD card? Minimum of an hour? Curious how feasible it is to switch between CFW and OFW if you don't want to burn fuses.

You can patch your firmware to have exFAT support or use a FAT32 formatted SD card but either method involves you first formatting the SD card to FAT32 which you must do with a third-party program if the SD card is larger than 32 GB such as GUIFormat. If you want to patch your firmware to have exFAT support, you can use the homebrew application ChoiDujourNX.

For injecting payloads with a Windows computer, USB2 is fine as long as the other end is USB-C. And regardless if you use the computer or an external dongle, you must remove the console from the dock in order to inject the payload.

Sleep mode is perfectly acceptable to use with CFW and has no issues.

Depending on the SD card and what tool you use to backup the NAND, your results may vary. For example, Hekate, which is a payload/bootloader, takes at least an hour to dump the raw eMMC GPP. The ReiNX toolkit, on the other hand, takes around a half hour because as a homebrew application, it is allotted more power from the console.

Thanks much!
The same reasons to stay on lower FW that I've read around still applies? (Self-booting exploits will be available on lower FW, but not higher?)
And how's the situation with spoofing FW for backups of newer games? Is that fixed as of yet?

And am I right in understanding that if I decide to get homebrew running on 3.0, I'm stuck on 3.0 "until further notice"?
I've been reading about bans from updating. So I'm really confused as to if I should stay on 3.0 or just update >_<
