What do you say to a friend going through a hard time?

Today my friend told me that her grandfather is in hospital. Lost for words I said the standard "I'm sorry to hear that." But the standard scripted line just isn't the most comforting thing to say to a friend. It's something a salesman should say to a customer complaining about a faulty product.

The thing is, asking for the perfect thing to say is asking for more scripted lines. The most you can do is to let them know you're there for them, and that if they need anything, to let them know.

Better to tell him you are with him and can help whenever required. Only say that if you mean it though

Reviving this thread because I am in a similar situation: a friend had a relative who died and he has been a dead fish for the past week. I'm hanging out in his house when I can but I wish I could do more.
