So I don't know how this project is going but.... since the Nintendo Switch release of RetroArch i've been a little bit jealous :v stupid NS getting much more support than our beloved Wii U. :glare:

It doesn't help that hacking the Switch is pretty risky and a pain since there's no true permanent CFW.

I mean after checking out the NS version I see is by far faster than the Wii U version, loading cores and everything seems almost instantly.

Right, but the point still stands, I don't think we'll ever see any easier method to loading homebrew on Switch, as again, it's risky. Feels like Wii U port is being dumped on.

Which I think is stupid, efforts should go to Wii U port because its pretty much discontinued by Nintendo and we can use it as we please now, I thought once the support for Wii U from Nintendo was dropped the scene was going to gain more developers and start to see awesome things but I guess I was wrong... they rather go to a very new platform that Nintendo is supporting very well with updates... its like they like the trouble.

Nintendo is cracking down big time on the Switch's security, even going so far as releasing consoles that have patched the exploit and actively update. Wii U? Complete opposite, yes, Switch has more power, but let's be real, devs just aren't willing to work on Wii U. At least if they do, they do so begrudgingly.

Yeah Nintendo had the Ball with the WiiU but they dropped it GAMECUBE Compatability , Game Delays and other Bad Management. I Love the extra Screen Features Why the Hell did they scrap that on Switch. But Anyway Back on Topic Look at XBOX Original Surreal64 just got update fairly recently lol.

I don't even think the NS is more powerful than the Wii U, its biggest advantage is the compatibility with the most popular and newest engines, that's the difference. I think Wii U could do better things since its a very powerful architecture. I think its like PPC or something like that :v

The only two advantages the Switch has over the Wii U are its portability and its architecture type.

Being ARM64 gives it a huge advantage over what cores can be added to it, not to mention most cores already have good enough speed for that architecture.

The only other advantage it has it that the Switch now has OpenGL and SDL, which helps it a lot with several cores.

This may be one of the most ignorant posts i've ever read about the Switch.

Wii U is very capable and interesting with its double screen setup and touch input, but it also uses a very outdated and hard to deal architecture, while the Switch uses a chip that is documented to hell and back and is very easy to deal with. Is perfectly understable that developers are jumping out of the Wii U ship and writing pearls of ignorance due to jealousy the only thing that accomplishes is telling those developers that dealing with the Wii U fabase is not worth it.

Wii U advantages over Nintendo Switch:
-Native compatibility with Wii games
-Pseudo Native compatibility with Gamecube games
-Accurate emulation of Nintendo DS games
-Does support external HDD: you don't have to buy expensive SD cards and worry about space

WiiU is the Emulator/Hombrewers wet dream, you have access to more retro systems than any other platform (except PC) its very unlikely the Switch will be able to play Wii/GC as well as the WiiU or have the same compatibility.
The reason things ave slowed down from what I can tell is theres no more "easy Cores" left to port, all thats left are cores that need special requirements like Dynarecs.
But thats not to say I dont want those cores on WiiU.. I want all the things lol

If only the U could get good PSX/N64 emulation, it'd be an all-in-one emulation machine for sure.

It would be great if we could get someone to compile N64/PCSXr for WiiU even if they perform badly.... I'm sure PCSXr would perform decent on WiiU (even with software rendering, maybe not fullspeed in all games but decent)

Yeah it might be a good idea to port the existing PCSXR WiiU/N64 emus directly to RetroArch instead of trying to get our cores to work with them from the get go. That might even make backporting the necessary changes to the main N64 / PSX cores we have easier and more pragmatic. Hopefully somebody in this scene with the necessary chops is interested in that.

Hopefully the remaining audio and graphics plugins could be updated as well; as it stands, there are still a few glaring issues with them on the Wii side of things (no Gaussian interpolation, ADSR/VAG, culling issues etc). It would be a good stepping stone, yes.

The only person I can think of which might be able to do it is FIX94, since I know he has a lot of experience in both Wii and Wii U coding, and coding in general, but I don't think he might be interested in doing such a fit.
That'd be such a great swansong for the Wii U for sure.
