Because the 3DS doesn't know which parts of the card exist and which don't. It thinks its a 128GB card.

Yeah with a properly working legit card you should be fine. I'd get fresh versions of everything though. I wouldn't trust any file that has been copied from that card to not be damaged in some way.

Yeah i have a 128gb and the usable capacity is 124gb. So i have a crappy SD card?

Clue #1:
A real flash memory marketed size will never equal their actual physical usable size. Because flash memory manufacturing is like baking cookies where no two batches ever come out exactly the same way (ie, you get mishaps that are slightly more burnt or shaped funnier), companies who sell flash products such as USB drives, SSDs, and SD cards agreed on stretching the definition of what 1 GB (gigabyte) can be for leniency purposes.

That means you have a fake SD card!

True definition
1 GB = 1024 MB (exactly)

Acceptable Rounded down definition
1 GB ≈ 1000 MB (approximately)

In order to reduce waste in throwing away perfectly good flash memory, your typical SD card will usually have usable sizes like these values:

Stated Size vs Actual Usable Size

4 GB ≈ 3.76 GB
8 GB ≈ 7.53 GB
16 GB ≈ 15.9 GB
32 GB ≈ 29.8 GB
64 GB ≈ 59 GB
128 GB ≈ 119 GB
200 GB ≈ 183 GB
256 GB ≈ 238 GB

Fake flash memories will often state on Windows File Explorer their usable size matching or close to matching their retail package size.

So if you get a 128 GB card that Windows say is 128 GB on the dot, yah you got ripped off.

Okay im trying it again. It says it will take up to 5 and a half hours! Why is this worth it?

Clue #2: The reason why it's so slow is because relabeled fake SD cards are often times left overs and rejects.

Also you can quit the test at any moment you get error. If and when H2testw finds something wrong with it, your SD card is no good.

Okay that sucks! But how come i cant load a game of 2 gb 3 gb. like pokemon ultra sun. or pokemon mystery dungeon? Even if its the only ?game file in the card

Please read my water bucket analogy here.

Interesting.. Thanks guys.
I just need to buy a legit 128gb card somewhere and there should be no problems right?
You can never be 100% sure your SD card is legit until you test it with H2testw.

Edit - When you buy and get your replacement card, do the test.

Damn.. Thanks alot guys for the help!

I have another question tho haha.

If i start my 3ds without a sd card I get the error:

An error has occurred:
Failed to apply 1 FIRM patch(es).
Press any button to shutdown

It gave me this error yesterday too. And i factory resetted my 3ds and it still says this.
What can I do to fix this? :\

Thats because you only installed Luma to your SD card and not also to CTRnand. That error means it is looking for Luma and can't find it. Also stop factory resetting hacked consoles. It's far more likely to break something than fix anything.

Update the custom firmware on your CTRNAND. If you're not sure what's your setup, update it all:
Also, dont use the fake SD card when updating the CTRNAND. This can brick your system.

* H2testw check your replacement card!!

Hi im new here so sorry if this isnt the right place to post this!

I just put pokemon mystery dungeon for the 3ds in my sd csrd and then i installed it through FBI.

Right when it was at 99% it stopped and gave me a error saying cia failed to instal. ( or something like that.. wish i made a picture. )

What could I do? This was the first time trying to install a game through FBI. I first did it with freeshop but today i discovered that its dead.

Someone please help!

How much space is actually available on your SD Card? Your picture is a little too zoomed in. Those numbers on the blue line in picture #2 are very important.

EDIT: Ninja'd :bortz2:

It's recommended you get at least a 32GB card, minimum. You can get them real cheap at places like Walmart. I got a 128GB card for a little over $35.

I see now. You only have 463.7MB free space.

The thing about CIAs is that you actually need TWICE the space required. 844.22MB for the CIA and 844.22MB for the game. You'll get that space back ONLY after the CIA is installed and deleted.
