Yes, you should try referring/following to this guide as it has a lot of sub-tutorials on how to do certain things such as backing up the NAND.

Thank you very much. From what I understand I can ugrade without burning fuses this way if a cold boot exploit etc ever comes out on a lower fw I can downgrade and be ok... I should be good to go! Thank you again!

After having used Switch Appstore for the past month, I now run into an issue where whenever I launch the app it loads then crashes and requires me to restart the device, turn it off and boot RCM and CFW again. Is anyone else getting this issue? Its only the Switch Appstore (Switchbru) that is causing this issue for me.

If all of your fuses are burnt or if your Switch is fried due to high voltage, you cannot recover from those bricks with just a NAND backup. However, there are no ways of currently doing either of those to your console.
Actually I was talking about software brick( wrong software installation, for example), not high voltage fried console

Hi all,

after reviewing too many posts and realizing that I am a noob I have a pretty direct question:
I have a switch with firmware 3.0.2. what would be the best option for me?
Staying at 3.0.2 or upgrading to something like 4.x?
What would be the drawbacks for me to upgrade to a higher firmware?
Until which firmware is the "sleep mode" still active on cfw? I do not want to have to go through rcm every time.

Where is the sweet spot for cfw for a switch with 3.0.2?

Thank you so much for your help! :)

I made a small paperclip until I wait for a actual jig and could spot the pins on my Switch with no issues at all. I placed it extremely gently onto 1 and 10 on the side rail and it fits nice..... pushed a test payload and works. Currently backing up my NAND now through Hekate and then will look into backing up keys. Can anyone tell me if those are always obtainable and I am allowed to move on for now and can come back to get those later?

Finally, just wondering if someone can recommend a dongle instead of having to use a pc....also would that allow for drag and drop and be recognized as a USB in a pc? Thanks again GBATemp! (=

I would get your keys immediately as if you brick in the meantime the nand is useless.

You can view them on the Switch, take a photo or copy them from CMD prompt on your Windows PC, it's easier than it seems:

Get latest release here
Also download latest Tegrasmash and copy to a folder in root of C:\ drive (Windows)
Put Switch into RCM mode
Run CMD prompt (might need to run as admin)
Type this into CMD prompt C:\FOLDERNAME\TegraRcmSmash.exe -w out/biskeydump.bin BOOT:0x0
Your keys will appear in the CMD window, you can copy and paste and keep safe.

What are and what is the purpose of fuses and what happens if they all get burned? Is best for people to keep all their fuses?

If your console doesn't have the exFAT update, it will not load any exFAT formatted SD cards, CFW or OFW. You can exFAT either by updating your console to the latest firmware or using ChoiDujourNX.
Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware of ChoiDujourNX. Gives me something to work on over the weekend! Quick thought, do I need to use ChoiDujourNX to update my other switch to the latest OFW? Thanks again!

I'm confused about Nintendo Accounts, v6.0 coming out and all that.

I don't have an account with Nintendo, just the console 'user profile' . My 5.1.0 Switch has never been online, and is in airplane mode. I never plan on going online. But I'm seeing that some newer NSP's are required a "linked account" for them to launch.

So, do I need to create an online account on my PC, using a burner email, and link that to my console offline?

Such a simple concept but it's stumped me lol :D

Sorry for hijacking your post. I Wanted to ask the same question. I haven't hack my switch yet but I have unlinked my account in preparation for firmware 6.0 but Seems like linked account is required to play the 'new' NES games.

Should I update to 6.0 and link my burner account first before I hack my switch?

I will burn the fuse and lose chance to go back to 5.1.0 Or are there any workarounds?

Linking account in 5.1.0 is not possible already. Nintendo won't allow.

Thanks.

Got myself a Switch with 4.0.1 and a (hackable) Serialnumber as followed: XAJ400348XXXXX

I am going to follow reinx.guide - Should i be worried about updating my console right now?
With regards to burned fuses, and so on?
Never the less, i plan on staying offline (just backup single player games :-)) most of the time, are the burned fuses that critical, or should i be less worried?

Hello there. Newbie here. I have some questions regarding a first time startup:
  1. Got my Switch at launch and it's on 5.1.0 right now. I haven't done anything hacking related to it yet. Is it better to update to 6.0 and then install homebrew on it?
  2. Even though I read the "official" released threads for each bootloader (Hekate, ReiNX and Atmosphere) I'm not really sure what would be best for me to use. How do I decide which one is the right one for me?
  3. As for the USB C cable - can I use the one that comes with the Pro Controller?
  4. I'm not sure what SD card I should get. SanDisk or Samsung. 64GB or 128GB? I read that a NAND Backup can be around 30GB can I move the backup from the SD card afterwards to a safe place to any HDD to get more space?
  5. I completely turn off my Switch most of the time I never leave it in standby (sleep)-modus. If I install let's say for example ReiNX and I turn off my Switch and then reboot it is anything homebrew related deleted? I'm confused about AutoRCM as well tbh I don't really want to use it if possible.
  6. I bought a 3D printed Jig and tried using it and it worked very well, however since I didn't do anything else besides putting the Switch into RCM mode and then turned it off and on again is there any possibilites of damage if you don't inject any playloads at all?
  7. Regarding the NAND backup I read that it's recommed to do it asap. Many people postings said that it's a "clean" backup - what does that mean exactly? If you put a playload and any of the firmwares on the switch aren't these files already there and make a "trace" to the hack on the NAND or what exactly does that mean?
Thanks in Advance.

Is your SD card exFAT? Its possible your SD card and/or the homebrew became corrupted. Maybe update your appstore homebrew as well.
Might seem obvious....but how do I do a NAND backup now I have SXOS on my switch?
You cannot backup the NAND using SX OS. You will have to either use Hekate or the ReiNX toolkit.
So what is the best of the 'cheap' dongles right now?
The dragon injector.

Update your firmware to 5.1 using ChoiDujourNX so you can downgrade to 3.0.2 or any other higher firmware at any time. CFW/homebrew works best on 5.1 currently. Also sleep mode works on all CFW; you may run into issues with sleep mode and CFW if your Switch is updated to firmware 6.0.
How do I disable AutoRCM in ReiNX? The guide implies that I can disable it easily but what does it mean by that?
You disable AutoRCM using the same tool that enabled it in the first place.
What are and what is the purpose of fuses and what happens if they all get burned? Is best for people to keep all their fuses?
Fuses are used to prevent downgrading; your console is designed to boot a lower firmware than the number of fuses burnt. Read more here.

You don't need to but I would highly recommend updating any hacked Switch to firmware 5.1 using ChoiDujourNX as that is currently the best firmware for CFW and homebrew. Its much better than firmware 6.0 in my opinion.

The only reason you would be worried about fuses is because there are unreleased exploits that work up to firmware 4.1 that don't involve the need for a jig and USB cable; if these exploits do not interest you, then update and burn your fuses. However I would still recommend updating without burning fuses as having more options in terms of exploits is better than not. In terms of the best firmware for CFW/homebrew, it is currently 5.1 (6.0 is not fully supported as of yet).

  1. 5.1 is universally better for CFW/homebrew than 6.0
  2. Atmosphere is not a bootloader; only Hekate and ReiNX are bootloaders while ReiNX and Atmosphere are CFWs which as you can see, ReiNX is both a bootloader and CFW.
  3. Yes
  4. For CFW, any SD card bigger than 4 GB is required however bigger is usually better (as long as the SD card is not fake which you can test with h2testw or FakeFlashTest)
  5. If you like turning off your console and want to avoid using AutoRCM, then do not install AutoRCM. You cannot turn off a console with AutoRCM from Horizon if AutoRCM is installed; a Switch with AutoRCM installed must be turned off from RCM in order to be powered down properly
  6. You are jamming metal inside of your $300 piece of hardware. Damage is theoretically possible and nearly inevitable. However, if you're careful and not forceful, you can minimize as much damage as possible
  7. If the first thing you do with a hacked console is backup the NAND, then the NAND you end up creating is clean aka hack-free. If you restore this NAND before going online, you will have the lowest chances of getting banned if you performed all of your hacks offline. If you don't restore this NAND and hack the console, it is impossible to remove all of the traces of hacking

I agree that Dragon Injector is the best and am excited but it is still under development and has not shipped. A very talented member is working on it in his spare time but he has other obligations like his day job. If you need one right now the NS-Atmosphere gets good reviews but all of them seem to get the job done. In a month I will be taking some long plane trips so will likely pick up the cheapest I can find for now as I don’t want to haul my laptop on pleasure trips.
