That is interesting, I did not know that. That would be a major bummer, but if that is the case, I'm sure we could override that on a Switch running CFW. It's not ideal though.

Without a low latency limit, this method should work on a stock Switch. I guess we won't know until somebody takes the plunge and tests it.

Fuck it, I'll be the guinea pig. Tomorrow I get paid, I'll order a Nintendo Switch LAN adapter from Amazon.

I need somebody to try playing against. The only game I have that supports wired LAN is Splatoon 2. Who here has Splatoon 2, a LAN adapter for their Switch, and a PC with either two ethernet jacks, or a laptop with a wireless connection you can use to get online and a ethernet jack you'd use to connect the Switch.

I'll set up an OpenVPN server and give you everything you need to connect to it. We might also try Hamachi, I prefer just directly connecting to each other using OpenVPN but a lot of people don't have the knowledge to set that up for their own use.

One of the cool factors about OpenVPN is that if you have the right router you can build the functionality into it so that your Switch can be connected directly to it and you don't have to worry about using a PC for the VPN connection. Or you can go on Amazon and buy a hardware VPN adapter.
How did it go? I got custom firmware in my router so I can connect whatever device on my network to a VPN. In Mario kart u can get the lan option in the menu without connecting a physical cable, I would think u can lan over WiFi as well.

Sorry, I don't have the Ethernet adapter.
I dont have one either, but i think xlink kai can simulate adhoc in psp mode. so wifi should work, also in mario cart if u hold down some button combination u can get lan option even without the adapter, so it may work over wifi.

Ok but the only open port I have is port 80, I cannot open any other port on "my" router.

U dont have to open ports for xlink kai, it connects your and some1 elses pc to a server that then relays all the information for you, so the "opened" ports are on their server.
The 2 or more pcs will then think they are in the same network (then u normaly bridge that network to the rest of your lan), or in the case of the psp adhoc emulation your psps will think they are

Wait, maybe im thinking of XBconnect... damn i dont remember was so long ago since i used this software, u may need port forwarding for kai... We will have to look this up

Anyway, a regular vpn would probably work anyway (like hamachi) and then bridging the connection, but that would not work for games that needs to emulate adhoc (direct wireless to wireless)

Sorry I've been swamped at work, I've gotten my network adapter and should have things set up and available for testing Saturday if anyone's available to test with me.

Project is definitely not abandoned, but I do have a life, job, and family, and I haven't had a lot of free time lately.

I could be wrong, but I don't think X-Link will work for this in it's current state. At least in the past it filtered traffic using the vendor portion of the MAC address, so that it would only forward traffic from the game consoles it worked with. Switch complicates things because there are multiple vendors making USB LAN adapters that work with it, but it shouldn't be that hard for XLink Kai to be updated to handle a custom MAC.

Ah u are saying they have hard coded the Mac range in the software? No way atm for setting your own? How about spoofing the Mac address somehow by relaying it through a virtual network adapter in Windows?

GUIDE?

I dont have time to try this atm, but i will write a simple guide on what i think would probably work (I have used a simular setup to play lan xbox games over interet).

What each user needs:
A computer with wifi and any other type of network connection (another wifi dongle or ethernet cable). For example i have 1 wifi and 1 cable.
Hamachi, Tungle, Xlink or other VPN (all users needs the same program, and needs to be connected to the same network)

1. Setup the wifi on the PC as Ad-Hoc (guides on how to do this can easely be found on google). Make sure the IP range you select are the same as the other person you will be playing with, for example 10.0.0.1 for you and 10.0.0.2 for your friend/s (you cant have the same adress, it will not work).
2. In network setting on your PC select both the wifi and your VPN network (Hamachi) by holding ctrl.
3. Right click one of the selected networks and press bridge.
4. Connect the Switch to the PCs wifi.

You should now theoreticly be on the same network via hamachi and being able to play games that suport wireless/lan play over the intenret.
I have seen that if you hold L and R and press the left stick you can get Lan play in Mario kart without the lan adapter, so possibly this can work if normal wireless does not work.

A possible way of seeing if this trick worked at all can be for example to start an ftp server on one switch and see if the other person can connect to it. That way we know if its the games that does not work or this setup.

If this still does not work, the next step will be to use Xlink Kais PSP feture to trick the Switch that is is currently connected directly to another Switch.

So I decided to kind of try this out with someone. We tried it with Hamachi. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it to work. Obviously, there can be a lot of variability errors, so I'm not too sure if we can entirely rule out Hamachi, but for now, I'd ideally want to try out what @RHOPKINS13 has suggested: OpenVPN. The reason I think it'd be easier to use OpenVPN over Hamachi (at least for initial testing) is that it should hopefully/potentially remove some of the variability errors. For example, reexe in the post above me says to bridge your Switch connection and Hamachi. I couldn't get that to work. Bridging the connections would cause Hamachi to start acting strangely and would stop pinging the other player on my PC. Hamachi was also designed for PC games and not for consoles.
