Like nearly all other posts before me, get an r4 card and follow the CFW guide (look at your first reply for links), and once you do that, you'll be able to directly install your backups and even homebrew if that's your fancy.

No need to pay $90+ for a 3DS flashcard. It's a waste of money. Take it from me, I own a Sky3DS Blue Button. It was definitely worth the money at the time I got it, in my eyes....then I found gbatemp..... ;(

You can wait for little while until 'STARGATE 3DS' is released. It can play both 3DS games and DS game and it is NTRboothax compatible....
so pay close to $90 to play 3ds roms, or pay $20, get cfw, fbi, and freeshop, and play just about every 3ds game for free. logic.

And what cart am I missing?

A bunch, a few very different implementations and their clones. People on here are VERY myopic especially when it comes to 3DS mode flash carts. Almost bigoted. Simple search turns up the truth!

Tho the MT-Card, the EZ Redux and the blue 3ds never bricked anyone's system. Saying that all of them can is pure bullshit.

So, clones of the Sky3DS, or Clones of the Gateway which requires a poor CFW. Got it, so I was right all along.

So you'll be paying $100 for something you can do with $20 and not using any of the features that cost the extra.

WTF WHY? didn"t you read? ANY cart that plays 3DS roms is a minimum of $60. Plus most of them don't play NDS roms. GET AN R4i GOLD RTS $20

see bros he asked about flashcart, so i told him about flashcart. now he probably know's about cfw but he still asked so i told him, now if he wants to spend $20 or $100 that's upto him, i just advised him about flashcart....

All right, then... Which of the DS flashcarts compatible with ntrb is the best now? I mean... I want to install a CFW in my european NN3DS XL SNES edition, but also I want the best cart in order to play DS games (nice performance, few or none issues, high quality materials...). I don't mind the price, I just want the best for now and forever if I can.

Get an Acekard 2i. Great flashcart and the compatibility is perfect. I'm not up to date on the DS flashcart stuff, but when I bought mine, Acekard2i was #1 recommended. No worries about anti piracy measures in Pokemon either.

Don't get an AK2i as you can't flash it with an up to date single 3ds system. You would need a system that it still works with to flash it.
The best flashcard for ntrboot is the r4i gold 3ds plus (r4ids.cn). It has a switch to change between ntrboot and ds games, works without custom firmware on all dsi/3ds system, officially supports the wood kernel etc.

Hey everyone, just a quick bump and update here. First off, thanks for all the replies, the info has been super helpful.

I went ahead and grabbed an R4i Plus and it has been pretty straightforward so far. I managed to install custom firmware on my 2DS and have been able to install and play 3DS titles via .cia files which is pretty awesome. I only have a couple follow-up questions.

First off, I installed the CFW using my 32GB microsd and was pleasantly surprised to see that not only am I able to play my backups using this SD card, but it retained my savegames for my original cartridge-based games so I can load both my backups from my SD as well as continue using it for my save files for my physical copies as well. However, I realized after all the files were installed that I would be better off using my larger 64gb microsd instead as it has more space for a bigger variety of backup games. I tried copying the contents of the 32gb card to my 64 and using it instead, however when I switch the cards my 2ds says "the SD card cannot be read. software cannot be loaded from this SD" or something to that effect. When I switch back to the 32gb card the files show up on the home screen no problem. Is there something I'm missing in order to get the files to load on a different sd card than the one I used to mod the 2ds? Do I have to go through the entire installation process to use my larger 64gb sd card? Or is it just a formatting issue with my 64gb card? (fat32 vs. exFat vs. NTFS)? This has been puzzling me, perhaps someone here has some experience in dealing with this issue.

Secondly, how am I able to use the R4i Plus to play original DS games? I downloaded and unzipped the firmware for my card (Wood R4i Gold v 1.64) , at least I think it's the correct firmware, it was difficult to determine as there are many, and loaded the files onto my microSD formatted to fat32 as the guide located here https://gbatemp.net/threads/review-r4i-gold-3ds-plus.488519/ directed. I created a folder on the root of the sd called "games" and put a few DS roms in there just to test it out. I also opened up the mod chip and flipped the switch from "NTRBootHax mode", which is what I used to mod my 2ds, back to its original position "DS mode". When I load up my 2ds boot screen, the logo where the current cartridge is displayed shows a funny looking character icon and some japanese text with the name Konami. I press A to go ahead and load it up, assuming this is the method required to boot my R4 and access my DS games, and all that happens is the screen goes black for a few seconds, nothing happens, and then the 2DS home menu just reappears. No matter how many times I try to load it the same thing keeps happening. What am I doing wrong?

So, in a nutshell, I am stumped as to how I can copy all my data from my 32bg microsd to my 64 and have it function correctly, and also have no idea how to use the R4i Plus to play DS games on my 2DS.

Any help, info, or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Use GuiFormat to format the 64GB card as FAT32. You might also want to check it first with H2testw so you don't lose any data if it is corrupted or fake.

also have no idea how to use the R4i Plus to play DS games on my 2DS.
You might have to try some different firmware files until you find the ones that work. But what you said you did is all correct.

I figured out the reason why my SD card wasn't being read, I simply had to flip the switch on the side of the micoSD adapter from write-protected mode to unlock it. After doing this I was able to copy the contents of my 32gb to my 64 and the files showed up and loaded perfectly. Go figure. :P

As far as getting the original DS games to load via my flash cart, I was unable to make it work. I tried different firmwares, I tried updating Luma as I read in another thread that older versions of Luma are incompatible with regular Nintendo DS mode. Nothing seemed to remedy the issue, which is fine, I am content with just playing my 3DS games off my SD card. That's the reason I got the flash cart and playing older DS games isn't a huge priority to me.

However, something happened today that is very puzzling to me. I was playing my games, installed via .cia files onto my SD card, and everything was working properly and has been for the past few days. I have been switching between Animal Crossing New Leaf and Sonic Generations with no issues, everything working as it should.

However, this evening as I was playing Sonic Generations, I beat the level I was playing and turned off my 2DS. I let it sit in my pocket for a little while, maybe thirty minutes or so, and when I went to turn the 2DS on again to continue playing I was greeted with a black screen when I power the system on. I have repeatedly turned the system on and off again , with and without an SD card or cartridge insterted, hoping to get the home menu to load up and have had no success.

This really concerns me, as the system was working fine and I did nothing to alter the contents of the SD card between playing Sonic last time, and rebooting the system. It just randomly stopped working all of a sudden. How could this have happened? Is it common for the 2ds/3ds to just randomly brick itself after the CFW has been installed? I would think I would have had to install a corrupt file or accidentally delete or uninstall an important system file in order for this to happen, but that was not the case. My 2DS has just randomly stopped working out of the blue. Very lame..

So I started browsing the forums trying to find a fix. I followed pretty much every solution found in this guide : https://gbatemp.net/threads/you-dont-need-to-remove-b9s-the-guide-to-proper-troubleshooting.477024/ regarding booting to a black screen and nothing seemed to work. I updated boot9strap, updated Luma, cleared the Home Menu extdata, and even booted my 2ds into recovery mode and updated the system. Nothing worked.

The good news is, I can boot into recovery mode, even though performing a system update appears to do nothing at all. I can also boot GodMode and Luma by using the start+power input and the select+power input respectively, however everything I tried to do using these boot menus while following the troubleshooting guide has failed to work. So I don't know whether or not my 2DS is totally bricked or not, or if it may still be fixed but I am definitely discouraged about this whole 2DS modding process after experiencing this. :(

Perhaps someone here has experienced a similar issue and there's a simple fix I'm just not aware of? I certainly hope so because at the moment this R4 gold plus has rendered my 2DS completely useless.

Your SD card might have become corrupted, try another one and put a freshly downloaded boot.firm on it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I copied the contents of my SD to a different one, replaced the boot.firm with the one from Luma 7.1 and was greeted with an "invalid boot file" upon powering up my 2ds. When I instead replace the file with the one from the Luma 9.0 package I get the same result as before, endlessly stuck with a black screen.

I suppose the fact that I can still boot up god mode and luma as well as recovery/update mode should be a good sign. I suppose I will just have to keep repeating the steps in the troubleshooting guide and hope for better results. :/

With the new SD card did it have nothing but the boot.firm file on it? No Nintendo 3DS folder? Another explanation is a corrupted theme or game file in the Nintendo 3DS folder

Sorry for my delayed response, I've been without internet for the past few days.

I made two separate backup copies of my SD card, one of the contents right after I used NTRboothax to mod my 2ds, and a more recent copy containing all the data on the card after installing a few games via .cia files onto my SD. They have the entire folder structure that should be there (Nintendo 3DS folder, luma folder, gm9 folder, etc). I doubt it was a corrupted game I installed, as I ran and tested each one after they were all loaded onto the SD and they all started and played with no problems. I installed only a handful of games; no homebrew, themes, or anything else like that.

I would assume that if one of the files I installed was corrupted, the 2DS would have crashed immediately after the installation, or at the very least, after opening and running one of the games I installed. However, everything was working fine, every game booted up with no issues, then all of a sudden I shut off the 2DS, left it alone for a few minutes, and when I went to start it up and play again, black screen.

I'm thinking that once I connected my 2DS to the internet and went to update the system (which the tutorial stated was a necessary step to mod the 2DS, and was completely safe using Luma) the server, or whatever service the 2DS connects to, probably ran a check on the system to see if everything seemed legitimate, and when it recognized unfamilar software it shut my 2DS down as a security measure. I could be wrong, but that's my best guess. That's why any time I modify a console I am always leery of connecting it to the internet and installing an update as that is typically not recommended and is the usual source of bricking.

When I initially installed NTRboothax onto my 2DS, I made a backup copy of the NAND for this exact purpose. I'm guessing there must be some way to reload the original NAND into the system to get it back in working order? Is this not the purpose of the NAND backup?

I also considered just re-modding my 2DS using the NTRboothax method back again from the beginning, but I'm a bit hesitant to try anything further tinkering due to not wanting to cause any further damage to the system. Hopefully installing the original NAND I backed up will do the trick, although I'm not entirely sure how the process works and I will have to read up a bit more on how to accomplish this.

Hopefully some of this info can help determine what the problem may be

This doesn't happen.

B9S won't cause problems with your console, freezing and stuff will be because of corruption in the SD card or bad system titles. Uninstalling and reinstalling won't achieve anything except possible bricking after uninstalling (if you have any unsigned system titles installed - they won't run without signature patches and the console will therefore either not boot or have bad behaviour).

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Hopefully installing the original NAND I backed up will do the trick, although I'm not entirely sure how the process works
https://3ds.guide/godmode9-usage - see "restoring NAND backup" section.

So I went ahead and installed my original NAND backup and it restored the 2DS system menu and everything is working correctly again.

I'm guessing you were correct in that one of the .cia files that I installed was corrupted as I installed several all at once and they were obtained from a couple of different sources. From now on I plan to only install and play one at a time so that if this issue happens again I will know the exact file that causes it to happen.

Much thanks for all of your help! ^_^

You only need to worry about that for homebrew. Setup FreeShop to install games, patches, and DLC.
