Honestly I believe the game itself is incredible, and I love every smash game to pieces. I'm also heavily into competitive smash 4, but I think the competitive scene for melee is kinda shit. Like, it's all too same-y and there's not really any excitement or development anymore. It's just the same twelve or so people using the same four or five characters on the same stages with the same techniques. It's too boring and there's like no variety. And a lot of the games mechanics, instead of being fair seem exploitative. *cough* ledge grab ledge grab ledge grab ledge grab *cough cough splutter*
What do you guys think? And what are you expectations for the smash 5 competitive scene? Do you think people are gonna finally get over melee? Probably not but I'd hope so. It's not that I hate the competitive scene but it's just not exciting and nothing new ever happens. It's just a big competitive rut to see how deep you can get stuck. If you're into it, I don't mind really, but I'd just like to know why and what about it excites you. What makes it so special aside from its' consistency?

I agree it is kinda shitty but at least I get notifications this way.
Okay so tl;dr: I love melee. I love every smash game. But I think competitive melee is ass because it's too same-y and everything is incredibly stagnant. Like it's always the same people, same characters, same stages, same tech, etc. It's just boring and dry and my question is why people like it is all. Not like "oh people shouldn't like this it's bad" but "why do you as an individual, reading this now, enjoy the scene?" the only thing I see that's good is how consistent the game is and the fact that the movement is really kinetic and nice. Other than that it isn't my cup of tea.

At least it's better than practicing for hours with your character in Smash 4, then still getting destroyed online by that one asshole who mains Sonic.

Source: I main Sonic

I'm actually beginning to figure out how to deal with sonic. And I partially main ike so it's a big deal for me.

Yeah. Out of all the high-level characters, I'd say Sonic is the most likely to be predictable, depending on the player.
