Do you anticipate physical games in the near future requiring/coming with a forced update to 5.0? For example, DK Tropical Freeze, which I believe comes out in a month or two.
I recently recieved a Nintendo Switch. I'd like to prepare a 200 GB micro SDXC card for future use. When I power on the console, a message will pop-up saying I need a system update to use SDXC cards. Would this update upgrade my console's firmware or is it merely a driver update for the micro SD media reader?

Can someone please clarify what things are actually working with the current HB or xecuter? I have seen a GUI that allows to install apps and games, but I am more wondering about what do people do with their hacked switch. Are NES/SNES and other emulators running on the switch, are they running smoothly. I am on 4.0.1 and debating if I should update but I can't really understand what the current hacking actually allows to do.
This seemed to work well in the 3ds section, so let's try it here!
I've seen many threads asking the same question here, so to keep the forum clean, this is a place where you can ask any question, and get an answer from one of our fellow members.
There is no such thing as a dumb question here, just please read the FAQ before posting. On that note, members, please don't get annoyed if a person asks a basic question, you're here to help.
Here are some common questions. Look here before you ask.
Is there homebrew yet?
Yes, but you have to be on 3.0.0. There are exploits that allow homebrew up to 4.1.0, but these won't be released till the summer.
When can I install cfw/emunand?
cfw will be released sometime in the summer. Until then, stay as low as possible. The best balance between playing the latest games online, and ease of cfw installation is 4.1.0. anything above that (5.0.0 or higher) will make the cfw installation harder.
What can I do with the firmware version I'm on?
What a great question! take a look at this thread to find out what you can do on your current version
Can I get free games?
No
I'm on 3.0.0! Should I update?
It depends, if you want homebrew right now, don't update. If you want to play the latest games, access the eshop, etc. you can update to 5.0.1. I would not recommend this though, because if your on 5.x.x, it will be harder to install cfw when it's released. If you cart update to 4.1.0, you can still access the online services, but you can't update games. Tl;dr, if you want to play online, but don't want to make it harder to install cfw, cart update to 4.1.0.
I'm on a firmware less than 3.0.0! What can i do?
homebrew only works on 3.0.0 right now, so your best bet would be to update via the poken tournament dx cart. (Some new versions of the game come with 3.0.1, so be careful)
But I want homebrew and I want to play the latest games!
There are currently exploits that allow homebrew on the latest firmware, but these won't be released till the summer. If you absolutely must play the latest games online, update to 4.1.0. 5.x.x will be harder to install cfw on, so stay at 4.1.0 or lower if possible.
What's this about Team-Xecuter?
Team Xecuter announced recently that they have an exploit that works on any version. This does not have a release yet, but we know solder and solder-less versions will be available.
I heard about a switch emulator!
There is a switch emulator, called yuzu. However, it only is helpful for homebrew purposes. Yuzu is built off of citra, and is currently in a experimental stage. It cannot run retail games as of now
Is there a definitive guide for hacking my switch?
Yes! You can use switch.hacks.guide, or this user-maintained guide
