%100 confirmed this does not work do not do it, just tried it followed the instructions exactly it updated my game to the latest version but it also updated my second console to 5.0, i'm just going to go ahead and update to 5.1 and download a few things from the eshop now.
OP confirmed for spy from Nintendo, intending to trick Switch owners into updating their Switches to 5.0+

I did not want to rush my findings. I was trying to work out all the kinks and figure out which games it works on.

The main goal in this process was to get NBA2k 18 up and running on 4.1.0 but placing the cartridge in I only had the option for playing one on one game.

Then after this NBA allowed me to make a character.

I'm risking my data if this has been patched in any way.

I will do a video demonstrating NBA2k 18 only allowing one on one with no game update then ill update and show it working.

It takes over an hour with NBA that would be one long constant video.

As I said NBA was the game I initially wanted this to work on and it did. You know what I may delete Xeonoblade Chronicles 2 and show the update working between 5.0.1 and 4.1.0

Quicker update for the VIDEO transfer should take about 4 minutes.

Brb

On the outdated 4.1.0 have dns manual for internet settings blocking update.

Go into maintanince mode.

Delete save and or game data on outdated switch may possibly help. It did for me when I stopped the transfer and went to try again. That was Breath of the Wild.

I just did the transfer between 5.0.1 and 4.1.0 need more games to test.

Was your dns set to manual to block updates on the 4.1.0 version?

Was it the outdated system that updated for you on 4.1.0 or 5.0.0 to clarify?
i turned my router off neither console was connected to the internet at all, the one on 4.1.0 has been disconnected for a while.
the outdated system was on 4.1.0 the updated console was on 5.0.0 they are now both on 5.0.0

It could be possible that certain game updates will refuse to go onto a switch of an outdated firmware no matter what.

Discovered a METHOD for UPDATING outdated Games.

Currently on 4.1.0 so this might work for previous versions not sure.

Currently the game I am testing with the method I have discovered is as fallows.

Currently UPDATED NBA 2K18

Next few hours UPDATED Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2

Lastly I will be UPDATED Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Here is a link to the VIDEO.

The original thread was closed people did not want to give time for the release.

1. You need two switch consoles.
2. One Nintendo Switch on 4.1.0 and one on 5.0.0.
3. Hard copy of the game.
4. Updated game on updated Nintendo Switch
5. Go to game setting in homescreen/main menus of the switch on both systems.
6. Go to software update on both systems in the Game settings. NOT THE SYSTEM SETTINGS.
7. In Software update for the game choose Match Version with Local Users.
8. On the updated switch create group.
9. On outdated switch join the group created by the updated switch.
10. On the updated switch initialize communication for the update and all should go well.

Your game should now be updated on the Nintendo Switch running 4.1.0 with the help of the second Nintendo Switch on 5.0.0

All the best more details to come as they are discovered.

We already knew about this method, I discussed it in another thread about Kirby and its update.
In fact I actually did some in depth testing of it across various titles, and my conclusion is it works SOMETIMES.
You'll want to be VERY careful doing this. Kirby for instance the update requires 5.0.0, and attempting to update the game this way will have the 5.0.0 send a SYSTEM update. If you aren't playing attention you may accidentally update your 4.1.0 or lower switch to 5.0.0.
Overall I would say unless you absolutely need an update (which most games won't) I would avoid this to prevent an accidental update.

What game was it again? Sorry not sure if you stated that all ready.

This is all a bit new. I tested with 4 games.

Repeating now with Xenoblade Chronicles to in a video with 5.0.1 and 4.1.0

But when I tried, it just said it couldn't transfer the update.

I had that once try deleting update in maintanince mode and make sure dns manual for 4.1.0 system

Actually, it will just send the 5.0.0 update over as well (or whatever firmware the 5.x+ system is on)

Part of why I wanted to do more testing to figure out more specifics.

Everyone was rushing on a detailed how to.

Did you manually delete any possible download of the system update in maintanince mode?
yes i did

kirby, it wasn't the only game i had but it was already in my switch, it's possible your method works for the older games but i did it exactly like your video

I wish you would have tested this better before announcing. It will send a system update along with the game update if the receiving system is too low to use the update. Kirby is an example of one.
I already did some extensive testing of this a week or so ago and found this out in one of the Kirby update threads.

So basically if the game update requires a newer FW then it takes that as well, if not all good?

yes i did

Kirby update requires 5.0.0. When using this method if the receiving system is too low to use the update the sending console also sends a system update with its firmware. I found that out last week when I tested this method. Hence why I didn't create a thread for it because it's a bit dangerous.

If you did do this previously where youyr dns settings set to manual to block updates?

Did you manually make sure any traces of an update we're deleted in maintanince mode?

Yes, blocking updates and both systems disconnected from internet. Some games worked fine, others would send a system update (the updates released after 5.0.0)

There also wouldn't have been update data as the sending system was on 5.0.0 while that was current firmware
