Homebrew Why 'soundhax' hates me...

I have some experience getting emulators, roms, jailbraking my iPhones and iPods, things like that. So when I got my new 3ds xl and my r4 card came up missing (I lost it in my room and I've looked EVERYWHERE in that abyss. I think it's safe to say Gort has my r4 card) I thought "hey self! Why not just home brew?! no aditional game cartridges to lug around!!" So fine, I felt I was confident enough to do this. Did some research, got familiar with the tools I'd be using then set to work. Installed everything with option one:
-Startup folder to root of SD
-otherapp.bin
-Soundhax.m4a

woot! I was ready, turned on the system, went to play soundhax and get a white box that simply said "could not play"... damn! I was crushed!!! So I looked at some trouble shooting.
Step one: try moving the files from the Startup folder to the root=same result
Step two: put them back in the file and drop the .bin=same result
Step three: pull them back out of the file still no .bin=same result
Step four: Come here for any additional help.
Step five: replace r4 card and not lose it this time.

soundhax was patched on 11.4 I suggest looking into Seedminer DsiWare injection though it costs $2

Yea I'm not worried about $2, I have a day job. I dont mean that to sound condescending cause I know there are a lot of teens on here. I just mean that I can afford it. I do have 11.6.0.39U, I have both my new and my mom's old 3ds that I'm trying to do this for. Both are on the same firmware, and when I say new/old, I dont mean I just got an old one at the store and am calling it "new" ROFL. (Had some one ask me that once ROFL)

Anyone can afford $2 regardless of income, but I get what you mean. Any price is affordable is what you're saying lol (People usually complain about having to spend $7 for an exploit on wiiu, or to buy a USB hard drive)

Since you are trying to hack two 3DS, the seedminer method is not recommended at this point unless you're willing to brute force two files or someone is nice enough to brute force for you both times. You could make this easier for yourself and get a DS flashcard with ntrboot compatibility. The cheapest option is the R4 SDHC, which goes for $10. If you wanted to use it for DS games it isn't a good long term flashcard since it has a time bomb. But you can get the $20 R4i Gold Plus (Which if you didnt want to get your hands dirty, this would actually make things a little easier since you can just flip a switch to enable ntrboot without having to flash it yourself). And the R4i Gold Plus is great for DS games if interested. With one flashcard, you could hack as much 3DS as you want with the same card. It comes with a magnet needed for ntrboot as well.

Overall:
Seedminer - Cheap as hell but have to get your hands really dirty to go through this process. Having to do it for two systems won't be ideal
R4 SDHC - Only $10 and allows for ntrboot usage, but must flash ntrboot to it yourself which isn't hard
R4i Gold Plus - Goes for $20 but comes with a switch to enable ntrboot on the go, and comes with a small magnet. This is the most recommended flashcard. You can get it from the most trusted site here: https://www.nds-card.com/ProShow.asp?ProID=575

I actually read very well, hence how I was able to get all this stuff done. No where on any of those tutorials did it say "Not for 11.5+" or "Hax for 11.4 only" or anything like that. Thanks for being your fuzzy self.

https://3ds.hacks.guide/get-started-(new-3ds) Use the correct tutorials. Googling Sound Hax even tells you right off the bat that it only works up through 11.3.

It's mentioned pretty much everywhere that soundhax only works up to 11.3. You must have been looking at an outdated guide (video guides are not recommended for this reason because they're not easily updateable)

Seedminer is alot easier than everyone's making it out to be. Using a flashcart is easier, but seedminer just involves sharing a friend code with someone and running a few python scripts.

I second getting a flashcart. It's perfect for modding any 3DS on any firmware or region and you get a convenient way to play DS backups. I have modded a few 3DS's with my flashcart all ranging from old to new USA to JPN on various firmware and it is MUCH easier than doing any of the other exploits in my opinion. Especially if you have to do a System Transfer or seedminer method.

Basically its

11.3 and below: Soundhax
11.4 - 11.6: Either use the $2 seedminer method, or go with a $10 or $20 DS flashcard (R4 SDHC or R4i Gold 3DS Plus)

You could use the flashcard method for every update, but there's absolutely no point if you're on 11.3 or below since you can use a free method.

Thank you to everyone that helped point me in the correct direction. For the record, I never "googled sound hax". I googled "homebrew 3ds 11.6" to which the vid for opperationidroid came up and that is what I used to navigate my process. I have since been investigating this seedminer method and have ordered an R4. Again, thank you every one that helped.

Nice. I'm sure you won't regret that purchase. I've used various methods to install cfw on the 3ds and a flashcart is one of the easier methods that is essentially update proof. Plus DS backups.
