They can change through OS updates, they don't need to release any other hardware.
If Nintendo will add support for external HDD on Switch is another matter entirely, but the possibility hardware wise does exist.

Wired pads: must receive data to activate rumble and leds to indicate to which player it was associated. Obviously must send button press data.
Ethernet adapter: must send and receive data.
Really, the hardware needed to do data transfer already exists in the switch tablet/console, the dock acts only as a hub to create the physical USB ports to connect devices with the console.

Not possible YET. The only thing lacking is OS support to external storage, you were saying that it would need actual changes on hardware.

It sends data down through the dock aswell, otherwise ethernet pings such as eshop browsing would be impossible.

Only impossible because it's not enabled. I'm sure Ninty at somepoint will patch in hdd support.

Not yet, they have basically said "maybe" so it may or may not come in the future.

That is simply not true. The Tegra chip supports USB devices just fine.

This is not true, while the switch is docked, the hardware is more than capable of supporting ext storage devices. The only thing stopping this, is software support. All Nintendo would have to do, is write the support, and push an update. It kills me to see that some people think it can't send and receive. Let's set all technical reasons why that wouldn't be true aside. How would the magic-ns dongle work if it couldn't send and receive data? Before your rebuttal is that you are talking about ext storage only, regardless of what data it is, it's still data.

3.0 is by far enough to transfer/receive data on the fly. If Nintendo didn't enabled such feature on the Switch, is because of logistic reasons or just don't want to enable it yet.
Nothing that homebrew can fix.

still not an answer to my question... at all... again. I asked where did everyone get info that it can't receive/transmit data via USB (because you quoted me about ethernet and controllers).

My assumption is that Nintendo is eventually going to allow for a usb hdd via dock. This will allow you to dock and exchange games from the internal sd / nand to and from the hdd. Nintendo seems smart enough to realize people download a lot of games but sd is too expensive and lacking in storage capacity, it would allow you to download once and only keep the games current in play to be on the unit and be able to swap out without needing to re download

This is just my assumption
