Toad's cranium: hat or head?

toaddd.png

In the latest Super Mario Odyssey Dev. Talk video, producer Yoshiaki Koizumi weighs in on a question that many have been asking themselves ever since they first played Super Mario Bros on the NES and glanced at the pixels that constructed the crude image of Toad on their TV's. And now, after years of wondering we finally have a definitive answer to that long-pondered question...

Is Toad's upper cranium a mushroom-shaped hat or is it in fact part of his head?

Here's what the producer of Super Mario Odyssey had to say on the subject:
So that, as it turns out is actually Toad's head. I'm going to have to leave it to all of you to figure out exactly how that works out. Maybe there’s something inside…

This goes contrary to the time Toad's mushroom was a hat in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, but now Mario has also spent time meeting and greeting realistically depicted humans in New Donk City who knows what to believe anymore?

So, do you buy the above or are waiting to hear from series creator Shigeru Miyamoto before making any absolute decisions about the anatomy of strange mushroom men in your favourite video game?

Technically it's both a part of him and his "cap," as in a mushroom cap. It would have had to grow out of him though, hats in Mario's world just look like normal hats, not mushrooms.

Edit: unless Peach just makes all her servants wear them as a cruel joke, also plausible.
So the mushroom of Toads is removable but naturally grown, much like the shell of clams?

This whole discussion kinda reminds me of this episode of spongebob.

What? Toads and frogs aren't the same animal. :|

Also, you're all forgetting that the top of a mushroom is the "cap". It's both his head and a hat.
Toads have poison, frogs don't. That's the difference.

On topic of the Toads though, it's their head. It can be very creepy if you think about it, look at the Pokemon Parasect:P What if the Toads are the same? Like, they have mushrooms merged with their heads, taking root in their brains and controlling them...

The biggest difference (AFAIK) is that frogs need a constant supply of moisture/water, while toads don't.
Toads have a different type of skin, and they can live outside of water.
Frogs in the other hand can only be outside of a very humid place (be water, or moist grass, etc) for a very small time, as they start dehydrating through their skin and desiccate under normal weather conditions in a matter of hours.

Eh, people find this sort of thing fun as well, no need to patronize other's fun in an optional topic.

I'm not patronizing anyone, merely stating my opinion to the optional topic thread and at least added to it stating it can basicly be what your imagination wants it to be as games like this are made for fun first then facts....well unlike you that just decided to attack me as if i was fact and didn't add as you say to the optional topic.

Yessss at last!!! Ever since I was a kid, and I saw the cartoon, it always bothered me that it was a "hat". I always stick to the "it´s his head" but at last it is officially confirmed. My soul can finally rest in peace.

"Toad" is just a name applied to different frog species from several different families. There is no toad group and no "difference" between them, other than name.

BOT I always assumed it was his head. Never crossed my mind it could be a hat.

Jeez... The things people on the internet put into question nowadays...

1) he lives in a mushroom kingdom
2) his name is Toad (of toadstool)

How on Earth does one conclude that that could be part of a hat?

You didn't say fun first then facts, you literally said "we don't play games for facts." Giving your opinion is a-okay, but making a statement where you say "we do this" is an assumption (assuming every one does something for the same reason). It could have been much easily remedied with just adding "myself and others."

Plus, coming into this optional topic that isn't debating whether we should be talking about this, but is debating a fun, silly little topic and telling us "we don't play games for facts" does not contribute to the topic at all, and in fact makes it seem like we shouldn't have this topic in the first place. It's like attending a friend's birthday party, and upon observing your friend and some one else talking about the pets he has, you chime in with "can you guys stop talking about this stuff, it's their birthday and we should be just celebrating that!"

I didn't even attack you, I didn't insult you or degrade you or even attempt any sort of intimidation. I'm not sure what words you're seeing as attacking you, but please let me know which words you're deciphering as attacking are, so I can either modify them accordingly or explain them with better clarity.

But on the other hand, princess Peach is also called princess Toadstool and lives (moreover, rules) a mushroom kingdom, that doesn't make her a fungus.

And there's also this.

Erm...no offense, but your counterargument really isn't saying anything about Toad. I can throw up a plausible theory on Peach*, but that doesn't change or even question anything I said (you can just as well point out that Mario is wearing a hat as an explanation that Toad must be wearing a hat :P ).

EDIT: haven't seen the youtube video (it's blocked here at work), but I assume it has that obscure reference of that cartoon where Toad removes his hat. There's no denying: if that's nintendo licensed, then I've got no answer.

*for those interested: princes and princesses often have arranged marriages outside their own kingdom. That would both explain why Peach isn't having a huge head (she's not a native mushroom) and the name (she's actually married to a certain prince named Toadstool). And, now I think about it, also why nintendo is keeping Peach's other name on low profile: it's not a lousy translation error but hints at the existence of an incredibly lazy-ass mushroom prince who just lets the plumber do all the dirty work. ;)
