Hi everyone. I want to know something before installing cfw (still waiting on that flashcart...) What's the best way to avoid a ban? I know obviously turning off Spotpass and auto downloads, and maybe even just disabling wifi all together. But what about when I need to use wifi, for example Freeshop, FTP, updates, stuff like that? I heard about using Rosalina to hide when using the Homebrew Launcher, but what about when using CIAs directly from the home screen? Is it possible to hide those without injecting them into Nintendo apps?

Disable the games on friend lists so they can't see what you playing.

Other than that, you really can't avoid ban, it's very random and the moment you install CFW you risk the ban.

OK, thanks
This isn't entirely true. Though it isn't known what exactly causes the ban, there is 1 thing that has been proven to protect you completely. Instead of using CIA applications, use the Rosalina hb injector. Since you're using a regular title ID, Nintendo sees it as a regular app.
the moment you install CFW you risk the ban.
I think the "You don't need to remove B9S" The guide to proper troubleshooting thread can answer this better than I can:
Problem: "I don't want to get banned! Should I remove B9S?"
Troubleshooting: B9S was NOT the cause of the Banwave. Nintendo can not get that kind of information from your system, without you sending them your system for them to find B9S. The current cause for the banwave is unknown, but it is known that neither B9S nor CFW were the direct cause for people to getting banned.

So the Rosalina hb injector is used to put homebrew cias in normal Nintendo apps like Health and Safety? That's the best way to hide them? I saw a video about an "incognito mode" where you change things related to the Activity Log. Seems like too much trouble to go though each time I want to use homebrew. I think I'll do the normal, turn off Auto Software Downloads, Spotpass, and friends list settings, then turn off Wifi until I need it. It'll risk me being banned in the future, but I guess that's fine. I don't play online much anyways and I could always just unban myself.

Disabling the SpotPass settings make no difference, and disabling automatic downloads just stops you from getting free eShop apps added to your home menu.
Disabling displaying the currently playing game to friends also makes no difference but makes you unable to play with friends online.

When you are online your currently playing title is sent to Nintendo (or your last played title if you don't have one open) no matter what your settings are. Your activity log is otherwise never sent to Nintendo.
This was discovered by logging the data sent to the servers.
For that reason I don't recommend turning off displaying your currently playing title to friends, since it only causes problems.

So, to be safe, only run VC injects and CIA homebrew while offline, or use Rosalina with the HB title set to download play so Nintendo only sees you as playing that.
It isn't guaranteed to protect you against bans like @Giodude says, there's no way to guarantee that when we don't know exactly what criteria Nintendo uses to ban, but by following this you'll be as safe as possible.

The only thing we do know though is in the FAQ thread. Lumacfw and b9s on their own after undetectable. If the console is used just like a vanilla one after installing cfw, ban protection is guaranteed, but that's a bit far, and honestly defeats the purpose.

Do what @The Real Jdbye mentioned above. You don't need to have WiFi disabled most of the time. Also, just a bit of trivia, it works by loading the hbl instead of the injected title, rather than injecting a cia. Makes no difference though.

Ok, so let me get this straight, if I want to use something like Freeshop (or anything else that uses wifi), the best way to do it is to get the .3dsx version and open it like this:
Download Play --> HB Launcher --> (Whatever homebrew app)?
Then Nintendo will still think that I'm in Download Play?

Health and safety app has proven to have a bit more stability, but yes. Exactly.

CIAs are still safe to use, however you might not want to mess around with online play. Also due to the use of flashcarts, Nintendo might mistake a CIA game you were playing as if you played it from a flashcart, that's my theory. Unless you go crazy with the games and Nintendo finds out something is wrong.
