Your predictions for the most under utilised aspect of the Switch?

switch_feature.jpg

Nintendo hardware often has interesting little features that go massively under used, or used only for pointless gimmicks.

As far back as the GBC there was an infra red port, the SNES had the super game boy, the N64 had the expansion port which led to the stillborn DD as well as the GB transfer pak, the DS had its touch screen which became shovelware, card games, menus and name entry after an initial burst of bad features (recall Castlevania ice sections and seals), the Wii had its remote dubbed waggle controls for a reason, the 3d of the 3ds ceased to be mentioned after about a year and "the Wii u".

Now that we have seen a few Switch games, got a feel for the hardware and can look to what is to come what then do you think the Switch will have as its equivalent? Will its joy cons be controls that can be detached to go into another holder, never to experience "HD rumble" or tilt sensors? Will handheld and docked mode be slightly different clocked versions of each other? Will its online services be the domain of score boards and DLC?

Edit. As many have mentioned the infra red camera is most likely to be the main one, if you want to skip that in favour of the second or third place ones then feel free.

As mentioned earlier, the infrared sensor on the bottom of the joycons. Also, I hope to see Nintendo's fascination with motion controls die eventually, as it seems to have rekindled with the switch. I'm fine if they're optional (i.e. breath of the wild or Splatoon 2), but making motion controls mandatory in a handheld Mario game is silly.
they aren't mandatory in oddessy, you can choose to play the game and never use them

I thought so too originally, until another member on here (I can't remember who, I can find the thread later) informed me otherwise. they are required for certain moons, mainly using the high frog jump in the moon and cap kingdoms by shaking the controller. Its not a problem if your casually playing the game, but if your trying to 100% the game It's really annoying imo.

it's probably just a simple flick up of the controller, it can't be that bad, stop complaining and enjoy that it's not like galaxy where you had to stay aimed at the screen the whole game for certain stars or simply constantly shaking the remote just to get around, at least in oddessy it's much easier on the arms, though you can kiss my ass if you try to call galaxy bad cause of motion controls, it was great

I think most of the features of the joycons are really good moves and work well together.

HD rumble is stupid though. Bet they could sell those things for $10 cheaper if they didn't throw that gimmick in.

or they could at least sell a joycon basic of sorts that simply only acts as a controller and thats it, no nfc, no ir, no rumble, no gyro, just controlls(buttons and controll sticks)

This is absolutely wrong! Games like Theme Park, Advance Wars, Age of Empires, Anno, Locks Quest, Ninjatown, Sim City Creator or Civilization Revolution would be impossible without the Touchscreen. Or what is with Hotel Dusk, Professor Layton, Another Code or LifeSigns? Or all these cool Music games? Or the Mario vs. Donkey Kong games? Or the Crazy Machine games? Or Puzzle Quest?

All these games would be impossible for the DS! Specially all the strategy games on a handheld was mindblowing back in time! Plus: The DS was the very first gaming device with Touchscreen. I think: Without the DS we would have no Smartphones today.

That might have been an overly reductive phrase. Also I liked the touch screen and many games for it (still very fond of Doodle Hex), and miss such things terribly when I am fighting a controller based menu or inventory on other systems. Compared however to the hype...

Advance Wars needed the touchscreen outside of the download play game? I don't begrudge it the touchscreen functionality but it was hardly essential (I certainly found it too fiddly to bother with most of the time) or game changing really.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong? You mean the GBA version was a figment of my imagination?

Age of empires amusingly went touch screen isometric despite being the one time poster child of real time strategy. Civilisation would have been fine without it, slightly more fiddly but fine. Also consider how many of the rest of those were available essentially unchanged on the 8 and 16 bit consoles, most of which did not have a mouse and other than the Amiga certainly did not have a mouse as standard.

Hotel Dusk? I recall playing Shadowgate on my NES. Played just fine. I liked my PC mouse using devices more but it is far from impossible without it.

Ninjatown I can see not working as well without touch, however the gameplay style goes back to something like Rampart and while I did like its arcade trackball versions the one of the megadrive managed to be playable enough to sink many many hours into for me.

Tile matching games have been around since the 80s (and things like panel de pon, dr mario and which takes care of puzzle quest. I agree it maybe opened up a bit more for the real time elements (though puzzle bobble worked well enough on dpad systems)

As for no DS no touch screen phones then please. It is basically a way to do analogue inputs without having to have a massive stuck or silly psp nub. There had been pdas for years with such things ( https://www.macworld.com/article/1002442/buzzweird.html ), many of which had nice little games for them. Phones had seen such things since 2000 or so (see Ericsson R380) and possibly before. No doubt the DS was a bit of a shock to the system and devs of phones and whatnot almost certain analysed things very carefully but it was the easy and obvious way to increase screen size whilst retaining functionality.

The kickstand :P
The thing's damn near useless. It's good for short play sessions but for anything else you're going to need a proper stand so you can plug in the charger.
I do appreciate them including it, but I feel like anyone that uses tabletop mode more than once in a blue moon is going to have a dedicated stand which works much better. Not like tabletop mode is something that will be frequently used by most people anyway, it's usually the least preferrable option.

I would have said the IR camera but that's too obvious.

Infrared camera on the right joy-con. There's only one game that uses it and we do not speak of that game.

What is the game

If we are sidelining the obvious IR? Then the 2nd obvious choice.. The touch screen. While few games currently utilize it, there would be little incentive to force handheld or tabletop play.

Or the 3rd option? Voice chatting. The app will be used for a while, but the base will slowly dwindle. I've actually got it setup so I can use Discord on my PC and have game sound through my computer. While trivial, I see no reason to use the app outside of potential app exclusive content.
The switch touch screen may be useful in media apps and other things like mabye a mobile game port

the little kickstand thing will be its thing
most people will probably break it off on accident, damage it so it doesnt stay in place or just never use it

I want to see a metal back mod that adds another kickstand that is more sturdy

Yes, because a flooded market with bad mobile games bodes well for it all, right?

Used to call those games bloatware.
Use to call those games more cheap shot for me to do

Mobious final Fantasy is pretty fun and Idolma@ster starlight stage, voez, and love live school idol festival are pretty fun rythm games

I don't know, quality control would be hard if mobile games started coming en masse.
