Nintendo release breakfast cereal with amiibo functionality

Nintendo and Kelloggs have teamed up to take fans on a breakfast odyssey that will continue long after the cereal box is empty. In addition to collectable Super Mario Odyssey box art, each Super Mario Cereal box functions as an amiibo accessory, making breakfast a more playful experience.

“This powered-up partnership with Kellogg’s is another exciting way for us to expand the Nintendo brand in unique and creative ways,” said Tom Prata, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Initiatives. “We are always looking for new opportunities to bring smiles to people of all ages, and this is a fun way to kick off the day.”

The limited-edition cereal box will begin hitting store shelves across the U.S. as early as Dec. 11. Those playing the Super Mario Odyssey game can tap the cereal box on the Nintendo Switch system, like you would an amiibo, to receive gold coins or a heart in the game. Even the cereal itself has a Super Mario twist, with colorful power-up marshmallows and a blast of mixed berry flavor in every box.

“We are thrilled to pack so much fun into one box of cereal,” said Brad Schwan, Senior Director of Morning Foods Marketing. “The package adds value and excitement for fans, with marshmallow shapes in the cereal inspired by Super Mario power-ups to tie the theme together.”

If you don't get the reference you won't find it funny

There's an episode of Spongebob where Squidward yells at Spongebob for being "strange," so Spongebob watches a self-help movie on how to become more "normal" in the workplace. After doing that, he brings a cubical into work and starts printing out Krabby Patties rather than cooking them
oh yea...
I remember this episode, just forgot the part where he was printing burger

This is genius. Nintendo loves money again. They are marketing towards the younger generation, because if they grow up with these games, they'll also buy them as adults.

It's why there's so many 20 and 30 year olds playing Pokémon.

Pokemon Red/Blue was also a huge accomplishment at the time, and quality has been pretty consistent with the games. Tons of other franchises in the NES/SNES era that just never took off, despite being part of many childhoods.

It's not like this is the first time Nintendo has made something like that. There was Pokémon cereal and pasta in the late 90s and I think early 2000s. The Pokémon cereal was basically just lucky charms but with Pokémon shaped marshmallows. I think there was a Zelda cereal too.

And let's not forget those Mario gummies that were a thing a few years ago (if they aren't anymore).

The only difference here is there's an NFC chip somewhere in the box allowing it to work like an amiibo card.

All right. It's an okay idea, but putting marshmallows might not be the greatest idea ever. I prefer cereal with no sugar or close to it. Not that it'll ever come to stores in Norway anyway

why wouldn't they just put a small plastic amibo toy inside the box instead
do they even put toys in cereal anymore? is anyone here even old enough to remember cereal box toy prizes
guess they probably did away with the practice ages ago because of "muh choking hazard" and "muh liability"
