Oculus Go, Oculus' Standalone VR Device Announced

oculus go.jpg
At the Oculus Connect keynote today, Oculus announced their standalone VR devie: the Pokémon Oculus Go.

Oculus' latest product is an all-in-one, 3DOF standalone headset with an orientation-tracked controller. No PC nor phone required! It will be compatible with software developed for Gear VR.

Here's an overview of the hardware:

Oculus Go is a standalone VR headset that comes with an orientation-tracked controller. It supports 3DOF head tracking, has best-in-class optics, a wide field of view, and fantastic ergonomics. Oculus Go has a high-resolution fast-switch LCD screen has a dramatic effect on visual clarity and reduces screen door effect. The headset is super lightweight, and the new fabric used for the facial interface is soft and breathable. Built-in speakers provide an integrated audio system that transports you straight into VR without needing headphones.

Because Oculus Go is binary compatible with Gear VR, developers working with the latest Mobile SDK (or recent Unity or Unreal integration) can run their applications on it without modification. The controller provides the same inputs as Samsung’s Gear VR Controller. Most apps can target the Samsung Gear VR and Oculus Go with the same application binary.

The Oculus Go will be available globally in early 2018 and will cost $199 USD, while Dev kits will ship in November. If you have a project in development that you’d like to add Oculus Go support to, apply for early access via the Oculus Hardware Request Form. Note that supply is very limited.

Yeah, that should be fine. Even though I have a 1080Ti I'm still hesitating until there's more information, especially about the 8K X. I'd like my next VR headset (already got a Vive) to be future proof, but the 8K non X version has no means of displaying a native 2x4K image (only upscaled 2x1440p at best). Supersampling might be an option later on, but I'm not sure, how an upscaled supersampled image will look compared to a native image.
I already supersample to 1440p (1.5x) with my Vive and that's really the point where everything is a notch up in terms of crispness, even without 4K panels. Not worried about trying to drive two 4K signals yet, maybe in a few GPU generations. Perhaps more than the resolution increase I'm looking forward to no SDE (or very little), and 200 degree FoV. Pimax 8K is basically the first gen2 PC HMD, I didn't expect such huge leaps forward to happen so soon.

This is pretty dumb, mostly when most phones now can do VR. I see no reason for this when Google Daydream exists.
Also, it has no headphone jack, right? So dumb.

I don't think any current GPU is capable of two 4k signals at the same time, under the same/similar load.

I guess this is Facebook's way of cutting Samsung out of the equation? Of course, I'm sure Samsung has their own non-Oculus-branded hardware ready to go.

crap like this doesn't do VR any favours, you try it out and the only impression you're left with is 'well that's a bit crap, dunno what the fuss is all about'

VR should have been sealed away in development for another few years before any consumer got hold of it, all that's been shown to your average user is crappy rollercoaster videos etc an it's killing what might have been a decent evolution.

As it is VR is running serious risk of 3D telly syndrome.

Lmao it's literally an unbranded Samsung Gear VR.
Right... Considering that Oculus had a hand in the Gear VR... And it's completely independent (ie no phone required) it makes sense.

It's cost... That's the major deterrent for the average consumer... And much like the 3D gimmick? Motion sickness isn't fun.

It's not simply cost, unlike traditional video games or technology you can't simply watch a video of it or see a screenshot of it. All you can do is compare it to an existing product, there are ways of trialling VR ie slapping your phone in a headset but the point is that leaves an impression that simply isn't positive.
VR as it stands relies on consumers 'taking a punt' but the decision is normally based on crappy VR experience..

Everyone is talking about cost being the deterrent for potential vr users... I'm waiting for PC solutions like the Zeiss VR ONE Connect. That and clones should make VR more obtainable for the masses.

On topic though, this looks like garbage and is basically useless as smartphone vr is laughable.

Why does it seem like everyone that defends VR, have to also put down AR in the process? Future AR, could replace almost every single screen, including TVs, and still be portable. With the added bonus of interacting and merging with reality.
Even now we could only barely see screen under sunlight, how far would you think for AR to go to produce a clear picture?

And AR interact would be even shittier than smartphone since we can't even feel the touch now.

Despite the price and technology of 3DTVs, I don't think they were/are a gimmick. Although, I can see AR and VR taking its place anyway.

Remember people saying better graphics means better immersion, but somehow VR is too much.
We can see 3D, I'm so tired of almost only 2d media.

As far as technology continues to advance.

Touch didn't stop phones from going from buttons to touchscreen. In fact, we are losing even more buttons. I doubt that would stop people from going from phones to future AR.
There will be the optional controller, otherwise I'm sure most people will be fine once they get use to air touch. Like with Hololens and Meta Pro.

I'm torn to be honest. VR is disappointing...as it stands now. The experiences are shallow, short, and unimpressive for the most part. The hardware is lacking, and it pushes current rendering hardware to its limits, so that puts a damper on what can be done by normal means. Obviously, you can put down some coding and rendering trickery to push out the last bit of impressive visuals you can, but it still falls short. And that's even before you get into latency issues of current high resolution displays that would make VR seamless.

The VR egg hatched prematurely in the 90s and died. It hatched again a few years ago, and it's on life support. I really hope that we're close enough to where VR hardware can and will be made at a lower cost than it is now.

I compare the current VR environment to what Android started out as. It was garbage. Nearly everything it could do, iOS could do better. And iOS was still garbage. Nearly featureless, and its greatest claim to fame was that it was entirely customizable. It didn't even launch with Android Market. And when it did, there was absolutely nothing worth buying or downloading for a long time.

But now, holy shit. Android has grown and matured by leaps and bounds. You can buy a mid-grade phone and have absolutely no stutters or slowdowns with the OS. When even a few years ago, you had to buy a top of the line phone to get everything to be snappy and lag free. And it wasn't even guaranteed then.

As hardware matures, so will VR. It's still in its infancy. It has legs, and can walk, but expecting a full out run at this stage is asking too much. But we'll get there, and I do believe it will be the future of gaming. At the very least in parallel with traditional gaming.
