VR hardware manufacturer Pimax announces SuperOpen developer program

Pimax, the company behind virtual reality (VR) headsets such as the Pimax Crystal and Pimax Portal, is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and for the occasion, it is introducing SuperOpen. This developer program offers direct access to the company’s SDKs, HDKs, and headset 3D models with the view to support an open VR ecosystem.

As part of the SuperOpen initiative, Pimax is supporting six experimental hardware concepts:
  • An E-Ink optical engine designed for comfortable reading inside VR.
  • A 70PPD ultra-clarity module that enhances cinematic viewing.
  • A liquid-cooling system to improve long-session comfort.
  • A facial-tracking front shell that enables realistic avatar expressions and natural social interaction.
  • A high-fidelity microphone module engineered for clear, spatial voice capture.
  • A simulation-focused “Pilot” and “Racer” edition for enthusiasts.
To support these projects, Pimax will offer SDKs, HDKs, and provide Crystal Super units to selected developers and creators through its community program.

I feel like most of the motivation behind this is to try to increase interest in VR. It seems more and more like it was a fad that has sort of passed

I am burned out from VR. It seems big studios aren't really interested in developing for it either. These headsets probably need to get smaller before VR can really go mainstream and stay there

around the release of the quest 2, meta founded the golden age of the vr market by providing a high-quality, industry standard headset for extremely cheap
the use of a loss leader like that to establish vr was really important
but quest pro and quest 3 completely stamped that out, because meta immediately tried to cash out by putting out headsets with good profit margins and high quality components with a premium price tag
this combined with the cost of living exploding meant that the vr industry collapsed in about two years, next to the rise of ai
if meta put out a drastically cheap headset with quest 3 performance, they could recover this, but for what, the industry has moved on

tldr; meta giveth, meta taketh away

The Quest 2 was still available for quite a while afterwards and served as the budget option for people like me, and it’s been catered to with the Quest 3S since. I think the problem more so is that VR had the most eyes on it when it was emerging tech, lets players were all over it but no one wanted an exorbitantly expensive Oculus DK1, not everyone had a gaming PC then either. there were no cheap options for a long time and the Quest 2 found a ton of success in an otherwise quiet space. I think a lot of people missed the boat and just became disinterested without knowing what they’re missing. I say these things like a jihadist but I myself only pull out my Quest 2 occasionally. It could be a lot more if I had a better PC VR setup but I don’t. That said it’s an interesting prospect as a multimedia device too.

Even when the headsets were cheap, the software still really was not there

HL alyx is maybe the one worthwhile VR game

Yeah, I avoid it too.
My pc have low specs before, then I get q3 and it's can be used without pc. Thats sold it for me.
Now I can run vr on pc and use it for 2 games: hl alyx and FOCUS on YOU. Well, I replayed hl2 with vr mod too.
But most of it time I use it as stand alone device, like a console.
I liked Warhammer, Starship Troopers, Star Wars games
There was cool short games too
Plus there a Beat Saber after modding it for more songs
I not like multiplayer, but there a game like l4d there too

Table tennis and poker? Where are the real games
both are games absolutely transformed by vr vs on a pc or console
poker in particular is the greatest poker video game there has ever been and the fucker is free

and don't underestimate the sheer joy of blade and sorcery
or the sheer variety of vrchat
i even forgot to bring up beat saber

Beat saber is cool and I played it quite a bit

But again, VR just doesn't have full games

Something another person said, which rings true, is almost everything released in VR has been a glorified tech demo or an idea of a game

Hopefully this can help lower the cost of VR hardware, but I have my doubts. VR headsets and controllers should NOT cost anywhere near the cost of the game console you're buying it for, nor the price of a PC. (Looking at YOU, Steam Index...)

A really misinformed take TBH. Though there are good AAA games not mentioned a ton of work done in that space is indie.

Having open source firmware means a device can keep being used for way longer, even if the company pulls the plug or goes under.

I have never even heard of this company...
They make the most vastly overpriced and ignored VR equipment in the gaming industry. They recently launched a generous 3% discount, which was collectively laughed at in the flight simulator community.

VR will obviously never be mainstream. Announcing a dev program where "select developers" will be allowed to develop for your overpriced niche within a niche product shows the company is run by morons which also happens to be what their customers are.
